SAFETY IN OIL & GAS INDUSTRY BY GUILLAIN NKORANYI WHY SAFETY? • Safety plays an important role towards the protection of human life, company property and surrounding community. • Safety enhances efficient running of productivity as well as corporate image. business i.e. the RISKS ASSOCIATED TO PETROLEUM REFINING • High flammable material • High temperature/pressure • Modern Technologies use hydrogen extensively • Corrosivity/Reactivity • Toxicity • Self ignition on leakage from system • Uncontrolled process reaction • Loss of containment/accidental releases. UNSAFE ACT AND UNSAFE CONDITION • Unsafe condition exists all around us: simply driving a car at high speed puts pedestrians and other people driving on the road in a condition where they are vulnerable to accidents. We are surrounded by hazards that could cause harm. • A Worker that performs a task in the field without protective equipment puts him self in an unsafe Condition. UNSAFE ACT AND UNSAFE CONDITION CON’T • Unsafe acts are linked to our behaviour: e.g. snow creates an unsafe condition to drive in, but that hazard is magnified by driving in the snow without slowing down or by not maintaining safe distances. That fact of driving at high speed while driving in snow or not maintaining safe distances is what we call unsafe act. • A worker who does not use the protective equipment while performing a task, the fact of not using protective equipment is an unsafe act. CONSEQUENCES OF UNSAFE ACT AND CONDITION • Accidents causing disabilities or even fatalities. • Major or minor fires. • Damage to plant/machinery. • Loss of production/profits. • Psychological impediments. • Loss of image. • Public liability. UNSAFE CONDITIONS CORRECTION • Unsafe conditions are the easiest to correct and cost effective and can be prevented by applying the means below: Safety audits Safety inspections Maintenance schedule for equipment Encourage employee reporting Good house keeping ARE UNSAFE ACTS EASY TO CORRECT AS WELL? • The unsafe acts are difficult to correct as changing behaviour is not easy but basically prevented best by developing a “safety culture”.
