Define TuberCulosis
• It is a chronic infectious disease caused by mycobacterium
tuberculosis and characterized by the formation of tubercles
(round nodules, warty outgrowth) granulomas in lungs.
• Granulomas mean localized collection of cells usaually
produced in response to an infection process.
• It may be transmitted to other body parts such as meninges,
bones, kidneys, lymph nodes.

• Among the infected population, Pakistan ranks fifth in the global TB burden . In 2019, there
was an estimated number of 570,000 incident cases, an actual number of 328,312 notified
cases who started treatment under national TB management guidelines, and 241,688 missed
TB cases in the Pakistani community.
• WORLDWIDE
• Worldwide, TB is the 13th leading cause of death and the second leading infectious killer
after COVID-19 (above HIV and AIDS). In 2021, an estimated 10.6 million people fell ill
with tuberculosis (TB) worldwide. Six million men, 3.4 million women and 1.2 million
children. TB is present in all countries and age groups.
