ALEX CHEN acc7938@stern.nyu.edu |110 E 14th St, New York, NY 10003| (919) 926-8723 Dear Professor Phillips: As a rising sophomore studying Finance and Data Science at the New York University Stern School of Business, I am thrilled to apply for the position in researching “How people get ahead”. My experience in chess, both as a National Chess Master and founder of Chess2All, a 501(c)(3) Non-Profit, PVSA Certifying Organization, has taught me valuable skills that I believe will be of great value to your team. My experience in event planning and management as a licensed tournament director has allowed me to successfully host and direct various USCF-rated chess tournaments, including the 2021 NC K-12 Girls State Chess Championships and 2021 NC Blitz/Rapid State Championships. This required me to work under tight deadlines, coordinate with multiple stakeholders, and think strategically to resolve any issues that arose. Chess has taught me the importance of attention to detail, forward thinking and problem-solving skills, which I believe are essential in the field of finance. I have also managed and led individual/group chess lessons for 80+ students worldwide, honing my ability to explain complex concepts in a simple and accessible manner, as well as my ability to adapt my teaching style to the needs of different students. Chess has also taught me the importance of patience and clear communication, which I believe are key attributes in any team environment. I welcome the opportunity to discuss my qualifications further and would be thrilled to have the chance to research “How people get ahead” in your lab. Thank you for your time and consideration! Sincerely, Alex Chen
