Here is an example: young : old :: implicit : explicit In an analogy, the single colon ( : ) means "is to" and the double colon ( : : ) stands for the word "as." Thus, the example above is read "young is to old as implicit is to explicit." Types of Analogy 1. Synonym A synonym shows two things that have the same meaning. find : locate :: lose : misplace (find is related to locate in the same way that lose is related to misplace) 2. Antonym An antonym shows two things that are opposites. kind : cruel :: happy : sad (kind is opposite of cruel in the same way that happy is opposite of sad) 3. Part/ Whole A part/ whole relationship shows two things connected. One is a part of the other. chapter : novel :: stanza : poem (chapter is a part of a novel in the same way that stanza is a part of a poem) 4. Cause / Effect A cause explains WHY something happened while an effect explains the RESULT. sanitation : prevention of diseases :: heavy rain : flood (prevention of diseases is a possible effect of sanitation in the same way that flood is a possible effect of a heavy rain) 5. Characteristics/ Quality People and things are usually described by their special qualities, or characteristics. Father : loving :: God : merciful (Father is to loving as God is to merciful) 6. Degree warm: hot :: cold : freezing 7. Tool/ Worker pen: writer :: instrument : musician 8. Classification jazz : music :: rainy : season 9. Item/ Purpose scissors : cut :: truck : transport 10.
