1 User Interface and Operating Philosophy
The user interface is a fundamental design feature of each ECDIS and may differ significantly between different ECDIS
manufacturers.
The software is a type approved Electronic Chart Display and Information System.
It conforms with and exceeds the latest International Maritime Organisation requirements for vessels subject to
SOLAS regulations.
The ECDIS is a Microsoft Windows based system requiring a dongle like other ECDIS.
The software can be integrated into a bridge system or used as stand-alone display unit.
1.1
Common Software Navigation Features
Welcome
Welcome to this ECDIS type-specific training course!
There is a huge variety of different ECDIS types installed on ships, each of them uses different menus and naming.
Therefore, it becomes increasingly important to correctly execute tasks, like route planning, on the specific ECDIS in
use. This course includes a self-practice mode on the real ECDIS, called “FreePlay”, to ensure that you will be able to
use the ECDIS onboard confidently.
The course is designed for 16 hours, combining theoretical learning through video tutorials in “GuideMe” mode, selfpractice of the lessons in “FreePlay” mode and an interactive assessment in “TestMe” mode. The exact time it will
take for you to complete the course depends on your prior knowledge and experience. The course is modular and
self-paced to adapt to your needs.
Feel free to switch between “GuideMe” and “FreePlay” mode whenever you want to practice.
The course assessment “TestMe” is accessible once you completed 70% of the “GuideMe”. It includes approximately
15 practical tasks that need to be completed using the ECDIS. The assessment will take between 60 and 90 minutes,
has a 70% pass mark, and you have two attempts per day. To validate your identity, you either need a company
supervisor or enable your webcam while completing the assessment.
After the assessment, our support team will issue your certificate on the next working day (Monday to Friday, Central
European Time).
For the best course experience, we recommend a stable, wired internet connection and a desktop browser.
Please note: When many trainees request a connection to the same ECDIS, our system may need some time to
automatically start a new ECDIS for you. Please wait 5 minutes and connect again.

1.1.1
ECDIS Layout
The ECDIS is operated by the "Control Panel", "Chart Panel Bar", "Conning Panel", "Functional Panel", "Pages" and
"Tabs".
All "Functional Panels" can be accessed via the "Task List".
1.1.2
Arrangements
Similar to a card index system tabs are used to switch between "Panels" and "Pages".
The tabs for switching between panels are located in the "Tab panel" area.
The tabs for switching between "Pages" are located at the top of each panel.
"Panels" contain essential data and functions to control the ECDIS.
Extensive panels are divided into pages that correspond with the task of the panel.
1.1.3
Confirming
Often you must type in data in textboxes. Sometimes you must apply the typed data.
Therefore you can use the [Apply] button or you can activate the [Apply Window] with the right trackball / mouse
button. Mostly you can also confirm your input with the [Enter] key from the keyboard.
1.2
Standard User Input, ECDIS Handling and Help Facilities
1.2.1
External Keyboard
An external keyboard is necessary to input alpha numeric data.
1.2.2
Trackball
Most ECDIS will have a trackball unit which serves as a pointer or cursor on the screen. It has two left buttons (one on
each side of the Trackball), one right button and an optional scroll wheel.
Note: Generally, the terms "click" or "select" mean the standard mouse operation "left-click".
A "right-click" will always be specified.

Virtual Keyboard
This training is NOT intended for use with a "Virtual Keyboard".
However, this function might be available in your system onboard.
1.2.4
Control Panel Windows
Important data and control tools are arranged in the "Control Panel".
The "Control Panel" consists of several windows.
Each window either displays operational information or contains the most frequently used task controls.
Windows are divided graphically with special lines.
Some windows can be moved by dragging them or by double clicking on the window area. To return the window to
its original position, drag it back or click the [ X ] button.
1.2.5
“Multi Display Panel” Window for Operational Tasks
The ECDIS Control Panel has a Multi Display Panel window to serve different panels for operational tasks.
You can select different display panels from the pull-down list which open by clicking the button with the name of the
currently set panel.
1.2.6
Tooltips
By moving the cursor over an element of the interface a small box containing some brief information will appear.
You can find tooltips mostly by moving over buttons with important functions.
1.2.7
Tooltips on Alerts
Move the cursor over the "Alerts List" to obtain a more detailed tooltip.
1.2.8
Help Button
The software provides help feature to obtain guidance on the operation of the equipment.
It can be accessed via the [Help] function from [Config] task, under the tab [General].
The window displays the contents of the complete manual or alternatively use [Index] for a keyword search or
[Search] for a list of topics containing your keyword.
1.2.9
Navi-Planner Help
While using the Navi-Planner software for Chart Maintenance, the Navi-Planner Help function can be used.
Open the Main Menu and select [Help] to access the help window. The window displays the contents of the manual
sorted by chapter. You can also select the tab [Index] for a keyword search or the [Search] window to for a list of
topics containing your keyword.
1.3
Installation, Start-up and Shut-down of ECDIS
1.3.1
Part of INS
An "Integrated Navigation System" (INS) includes several workstations for performing different tasks.
The Navi-Sailor can be part of such a system, using the Multi-Functional Display.
It can be used as a workstation for "Route Monitoring" or "Route Planning" task.
1.3.2
Standalone
If the software is not a Multi-Functional Display as part of an INS, it can be used as a standalone ECDIS.
This should still include two ECDIS workstations connected by LAN to cover back-up requirements if the vessel is fully
ECDIS.
1.3.3
Start Workstation
Each workstation starts by clicking the “On /Off” button on the console.
The “Transas Integrator” window will be loaded.
To turn on the ECDIS task from the Transas Integrator utility, click the “ECDIS” button.
While the ECDIS task is loading, the Initialising window will be displayed.
After loading the program, the ECDIS task screen will appear.
1.3.4
Protection Key (Dongle)
A Dongle is a system protection key. A protection key is a special device that determines the right of authorized use
of Transas Marine navigation systems. The dongle should be connected to the computer at all times when the
navigation system operates.
The systems are supplied with Line - Print - Terminal (LPT) or USB dongles.
1.3.5
Dongle Installation
After the computer has been mounted securely in its place, the dongle must be connected to the computer’s printer
port or the USB, marked “DONGLE”.
The dongle should be connected to the printer port or the USB before the software installation.
The system will not operate unless the dongle is connected to the computer.
1.3.6
Dongle-Less Protection
When working with dongle-less protection, the role of a hardware dongle is substituted by a special set of binary
data stored in the registry (activation code).
The activation code is associated with unique characteristics of a particular user computer. The activation code
cannot be used on other computers.
Note!
When using dongle-less protection, the available activation code cannot be used if the computer configuration has
been changed (e.g., faulty parts replaced, software re-installed, etc.). It is then necessary to notify Transas (via the
distributor) to obtain a new activation code.
1.3.7
Stop ECDIS Task
Use the button on the [Config] panel, which is on the [General] page.
Click the [EXIT] button.
Then confirm shutdown when asked.
1.3.8
Shutdown Workstation
To shut down the workstation click the [Halt System] button and confirm shutdown when asked.

This bar is called "Chart Panel Bar" Display and access to the buttons in the Chart Panel Bar are closely related to the
chart modes (“Main”, “Dual”).

On the left hand side of the Chart Area the Conning Panel can be made visible by using the "Show / Hide" symbol on
the bottom left. Click one more time to hide it again.
On 27" wide screen displays the Conning Panel is shown on the left side as a default setting.
You can choose from the following tabs. "Instruments", "Route", and "Docking".
1.5
Using the Cursor
1.5.1 Free Cursor
With the cursor it is possible to work directly in the chart area.
The "Free Cursor", which can be moved over the entire screen using the trackball/mouse, has various forms in
different ECDIS task areas.
You can switch between the three main functionalities with a right-click:
 The View Cursor – to display information when positioned on an object
 The ERBL Cursor – to turn on the ERBL function
 The Zoom Cursor – for activating the zoom function
In the functional panel areas, the cursor has the form of an arrow and operates as a standard window cursor.
1.5.2 Graphic Cursor Type
The "Graphic Cursor" is used during the operation of many ECDIS task functions and represents the intersection of
lines corresponding to the latitude and longitude of the given point.
The two types of graphic cursor are:
 Short - the cursor is shown in the form of a small cross
 Long - the cursor is shown in the form of an intersection of two lines across the entire chart panel
To change the graphic cursor type, select [Config] from the [Tasks List]
[General] tab and select [Short] or [Long] from the "Chart panel cursor" window.
1.5.3 Info Cursor
The "Info Cursor" appears when the standard view cursor is positioned on a lighthouse or other lighted buoy on the
chart. Click to show the object data card.
1.5.4 Acquisition Cursor
The "Acquisition Cursor" appears when you click the [Info] button from the "Chart Panel bar".
Click on the necessary object to open the "Info Panel" and the cursor assumes the standard info cursor.
1.5.5 Dual Mode
When the chart display panel is set to "Dual", other cursor types are available:
The "ERBL Cursor" and "Ship Cursor".
1.5.6 Information Windows
When a special cursor has been activated, an "Information window" simultaneously appears on the lower right side.
The window shows information about the geographical position of the cursor including, “Bearing", "Opposite
Bearing", "Range” and other information.
1.6
Entering Values
1.6.1 Buttons
With the buttons you can activate functions.
If a button is highlighted, the operation of the function is activated.
Therefore, you can see which mode is enabled at a glance.
You can also select sources, charts and scales with the corresponding buttons.
Buttons of important functions are placed in the Control Panel Bar and the Chart Panel Bar.
If a button is grey, it's disabled and you cannot use it.
The operation of the corresponding function is not available.
1.6.2 Text Boxes
In Navi-Sailor 4000 input fields are used as Text Boxes.
There are several types of Text Boxes:




Text Boxes with different size to type in data and dates
Text Boxes for names
Text Boxes for unlimited information (e. g. info field Manual Corrections)
Text Boxes to name layers (“save” button after new input)
1.6.3 Text Boxes
Text boxes are used to enter values or names:
Names are entered with the keyboard.
Data can be entered with the keyboard or by using the trackball.
If you move the trackball in the vertical direction, you quickly change the data in the text box.
However, if you move the trackball in the horizontal direction, it results in a much slower change.
In some text boxes you must click the left trackball button to accept the entered value.
In other boxes you have to apply the input.
1.6.4 Checkboxes
Another option to select a function is to activate a checkbox.
Checkboxes help to select filters.
On the "Tasks List" menu you select panels by checkboxes
1.6.5 Dropdown List Box Menu
You can choose a display or function from a dropdown list.
Click on the arrow button to open the list box menu.
You can select the name of an entry from the list box menu.
The selected entry is shown on the button after the menu is closed.
1.6.6 Radio Button Selection List
With radio-buttons you can select a function from an offered set.
2 ECDIS Basic Features
The right basic adjustment is essential for capturing all chart information.
This chapter explains the procedure for adjusting the display to your personal requirements.
2.1
Colour Codes and Test Diagram
2.1.1 Colour Codes
There are 3 different options for changing the setting:
Select the colour palette in the config task.
Use the keyboard.
Use the colour palette switcher on the chart panel bar.
2.1.2 Colour Palette
The palette's drop-down menu is access via the "Config tab".
You can choose between the "Daylight", "Dusk", "Night" and
"Night Inverted" settings.
2.1.3 The Night / Day-Button on the Keyboard
You can use the “Night/Day”- button on the hardware control panel.
2.1.4 Palette Switcher
The palette switcher button on the chart panel bar also allows easy access to the different colour codes.
2.1.5 Skin Change
To make a change select "Config" in the "Tasks List".
On the page labelled "General" you can select different skins in the dropdown menu.
2.1.6 Colour Diagrams
To run the "Colour Diagrams" utility, open the "Transas Integrator" from the "Chart Panel Bar".
In the "Task Bar" click on [Service Tools] button, then select "Colour Diagrams" from the "Tasks".
2.1.7 Colour Differentiation Diagram
The "Colour differentiation diagram" is used to check that the display will not discriminate important features by
colour.
To perform the test, click on the "Colour differentiation diagram" button in the "Colour Diagrams" window.
The different colour combinations are shown. Each combination should be clearly visible in all used colour codes.
2.1.8 Colour Calibration Diagram
To access the colour tests in the "Colour calibration diagram" click on the [Colour calibration diagram] button in the
"Colour Diagrams" window.
Select which colour test you wish to perform by clicking on the relevant checkbox, then click the [Ok] button.
If the brightness is correctly calibrated the colour inside the box will be visible in contrast to the black frame. If the
colour inside the box is not visible, adjust the brightness until the colour is visible.
2.1.9 Grey Scale
To access the "Grey scale", click on [Grey scale] button in the "Colour Diagrams" window.
You should be able to see all different shades within the block. If the steps cannot be distinguished individually,
adjust your monitor until all are visible.
2.1.10
Exit Colour Diagrams Utility
To exit, click on the [Quit] button.
2.2
Automatic Chart Loading
2.2.1 Autoload On
“Chart Autoload” on the "General" page of the "Chart" panel is a specific ECDIS task function.
This task automatically displays the best available chart with regards to the current position and the scale. This chart
will be set as the current chart.
2.2.2 Autoload Off
When the "Chart Autoload" mode is "OFF", the screen displays the current chart only.
The current chart under the ship's position is fixed until the loading mode changes.
2.2.3 Autoload FIX
With "FIX" you can start the "Chart Fixing" mode.
After the ship has passed the boundaries of the fixed current chart, the autoloading mode will be started
automatically.
2.2.4 Autoload Control Panel
You can also read the status of the "Autoload" function in the “Chart Area Window" of the "Control Panel".
2.2.5 Charts Format Priority – None
The “Chart Loading Priority” of different chart formats under the ship’s position can be set on the "General" page of
the "Charts" panel.
If "None" has been selected, the system will load the chart which is most suited to the set scale.
If there are several charts of the same scale available, priority will be given to the TX-97 format charts.
If you mark the ENC checkbox, a chart in ENC vector format will be prioritised.
2.3
Orientation and Motion ModesAutomatic Chart Loading
2.3.1 North Up, Head Up and Course Up
You can change the chart orientation between “North Up” and “Head Up” by a click on the button in the control
button group of the “Chart Panel” or via the keyboard.
"Course Up" is only available with a loaded route.
2.3.2 True Motion or or "TM" Button
You will find the "TM" button in the control button group of the "Chart Panel".
2.3.3 Customize the TM Limits
The " True Motion Limits" can also be customised using the "Config" panel on the “General” page in the “Display
reset to” group input field.
The "True Motion Limits" can be set between 90% and 10%.
As the ship symbol approaches the screen boundary the screen will be re-drawn so that the set ratio is maintained.
2.3.4 Ahead
You can use the “Ahead” button in the control button group of the "Chart Panel" to get the maximum view ahead on
the chart section based on "TM Limits".
2.3.5 Relative Motion
To change to "Relative Motion" click on the “TM” button and select “RM”.
2.4
Chart Area Scrolling Automatic Chart Loading
2.4.1 Centre a Point of Interest
Switch the cursor to "View" cursor type then click on the chart area to activate the graphic cursor.
To centre a point of interest in the chart display area, move the graphic cursor on the point of interest, then click.
Deactivate the function with a right-click.
2.4.2 Centre the Ownship
You can centre the ownship in the chart section by double clicking on the "Move ship symbol" button on the "Chart
Panel Bar".
2.4.3 Page “Ports” on Tasks Panel
The page "Ports" on the "Tasks" panel is accessible via the "Tasks List", and can be used to highlight the location of a
port on the chart and to obtain general information, facilities and services about a specific port.
It is also possible to interrogate the system to retrieve port information (if present) for a selected area.
2.4.4 Ship Cursor Sub Functions in Dual Mode
If the ECDIS is operating in dual mode, the cursor can be toggled between "Ship" cursor and "ERBL" cursor on one of
the displays.
By clicking on the chart area using the "Ship" cursor in a selected position, the chart will be re-drawn with the ship
symbol in this position.
2.5
Scaling
2.5.1 The “Zoom In” Symbol
The 1st option is to increase the scale by clicking on the “Zoom In” Symbol.
The important indication "Overscale" will be displayed at the upper left hand corner in the "Chart Display Area" if the
current ENC chart is zoomed in twice or more its original scale.
The overscale pattern will appear on small scale charts adjacent to loaded chart in the “Chart Display Area”, which
are displayed at larger visualization scale.
2.5.2 The “Zoom out” Symbol
You can decrease the scale by clicking on the “Zoom Out” Symbol.
2.5.3 Original Scale
To display the chart on its original scale, click on "Original Scale" button on the "Chart Panel Bar".
2.5.4 Trackball / Mousewheel
The 2nd option is to use the trackball or mousewheel to zoom in and out freely.
This function can be used with all types of cursor providing it with in the chart area.
2.5.5 The Zoom Window via Zoom Cursor
The 3rd option is the free zoom function via a “Zoom Window”.
Activate the "Zoom" cursor by toggling cursor types, then click on the chart area.
To zoom in a particular chart area, position the "Graphic Cursor" on the start point then click. Move the cursor to
expand the frame then click again at the desired end point.
2.5.6 Zoom In / Zoom Out-Buttons - Original Hardware Control Panel
The 4th option is to use the "Zoom In / Zoom Out" buttons on the hardware control panel.
2.5.7 Scale Minimum
To activate "Scale min" function, click on the "Charts" task from the "Tasks List" then click on the [ENC] tab. Click on
the [Scale min] button to activate.
This function is used to maintain the clarity of the chart.
The objects are gradually removed from the chart when zooming out and will reappear when you zoom in.
2.5.8 AutoZoom
Another option is to scale the chart automatically.
To activate the "AutoZoom" function click on [AutoZoom] button on the "Chart panel bar".
The "AutoZoom" enables the scale to automatically increase up to the pre-selected "Maximum scale" value while
approaching the next waypoint. The scale will increase gradually based on the distance to waypoint analysis interval.
Note: This function is only available on "Dual" panel with a monitored route.
2.5.9 Auto Zoom Settings
Open the "Config" task and select the "General" tab to access the "AutoZoom Settings".
Click on [Maximum scale] button, then select a scale from the drop down list. Set the distance to waypoint analyses
interval by changing the time in the "Time of update" input box.
2.6
Display Filters
2.6.1 Chart Information Layers
Using the "Layers" page on the "Charts Panel" you can control the display of individual chart information classes.
The following "Display Categories" are available:




“Base” displays objects included in the “Base Display”
“Standard” displays objects included in the “Standard Display”. The "Standard Display" can be Customized
but an important indication will be displayed in the "STD DISP" window of the "Control Panel" if the user has
customised to below the contents of the "Standard Display"
“Custom” displays objects included in the “Additional Information Display”. It is customised as required by
the user.
An important indication will be displayed also if customised below the contents of the "Standard Display".
"All" displays all the objects included in the "Additional Information Display"
2.6.2 Layer-Buttons on the Keyboard
Another way to set the necessary layers is using the keyboard.
Use the "Standard Display" button to set the "Standard" display.
Use the "All Layers" button to start the presentation of all objects including the "Additional Information Display".
2.6.3 Standard Display Button on the Control Panel
You can also activate the "Standard Display" with one click on the "Control Panel".
2.6.4 Moving Control Panel Windows and Displays
You can move a separate window of the “Control” panel by drag and drop.
Left-click into the window and move it to the place you want.
If you click on the cross, the window moves back to the initial point on the Control Panel.
2.6.5 Layers Category "Custom"
To customise the display of a chart layer, select or unselect the chart object or information by clicking the respective
buttons.
Note: The "Spot soundings" button displays depth values smaller than the setting (Setting is "0": All soundings are
displayed)
2.6.6 Show/Hide Sidebars
You can show and hide the right and left sidebar.
You find the "Show / Hide" button in the “Tab” area Panel on the lower screen display.
2.6.7 Expanding Panels
After opening a panel with the "Tasks list" you can expand or minimize the display of the panels.
When you move the cursor to the upper borderline of the panel, the cursor will change its shape.
Left-click to shift the border with drag and drop.
2.7
Chart Legend and Chart Symbols
2.7.1 Chart Legend
Similar to the colour differentiation test diagram, the "ECDIS Chart 1" test data set may be used as a library of chart
symbols.
Open the "Charts" task and select the "Complete list" tab.
Double-click on "AA4C1XOO" to centre the ECDIS on the INT 1 library.
You can zoom into any of the 12 boxes to view symbols of that group.
2.7.2 Change of Settings
The settings for chart symbols can be changed in the “Charts” menu in the “ENC” page.
The display of “Areas” and “Points” can be changed.
2.7.3 Change Symbols of Areas
Areas in your chart can be displayed either “Plain” or “Symbolized”.
You can change this in the "Charts" panel on the "ENC" page by selecting in the dropdown field of "Areas" either
"Symbolized" or "Plain".
2.7.4 Change Symbols of Points
Points in your chart can either be displayed traditionally as on the “Paper chart” or “Simplified”.
2.8
Depth Shades and Safety Depth
2.8.1 Safety Contour
"Safety contour" is a value which defines the safety contour depth.
You can see the "Safety contour" on the "ENC" page of the "Charts Panel".
The "Safety Contour" divides the navigable and non-navigable waters which can be clearly seen on the "Chart Display
Area" using the "Two Depth Shades" setting. To activate "Two Depth Shades", deactivate the "Four shades" button.
2.8.2 Safety Contour Customised Setting
The "Safety contour" value can be set on the "Monitoring" panel of the "Safety Alerts" page.
The safety contour is highlighted on the ECDIS screen with a bold line.
The safety contour display can only use depth contours available in the ENC.
If the selected safety contour is not available, the ECDIS defaults to the next deeper contour.
These settings are also used to trigger alerts and indications. If the previously selected "Safety contour" becomes
unavailable, the "Default Safety Contour" indication will be generated.
2.8.3 Warning - Safety Contour Changed
If you change the "Safety contour" data a window will appear asking you to confirm the change.
The most important safety feature of an ECDIS is still based on your own input!
2.8.4 Deep Contour
"Deep contour" value can be set on the "Monitoring" panel of the "Safety Alerts" page.
In the "Deep contour" input window you can enter the value of the deep water contour delimiting the colour
highlighting of the deep water area for the ENC format charts.
2.8.5 Shallow Contour
You can enter the value of the shallow water contour delineating into the "Shallow contour" input window.
The colour of the shallow area will be highlighted in the ENC format charts.
2.8.6 Four Shades
Open the “Charts” task from the “Tasks list” then click on the “ENC” tab.
If you click "Four shades" you will turn on the colour highlighting of the set depth areas.
2.8.7 Safety Depth
You can set the "Safety depth" value in the "Safety Alerts" page of the "Monitoring" panel.
A depth equal to or less than the "Safety depth" is highlighted in bold on the ECDIS screen.
Therefore, the display of spot soundings on the "Layers" page in the "Charts" panel must be turned on (category
"Custom" or "All").
2.8.8 Isolated Danger
Depending on the safety parameters and the display mode, the position and presentation of an object might change
in order to indicate a danger.
The symbol for an "isolated danger" will change depending on your safety contour.
If the isolated danger has a safe passing depth less than your "Safety contour", it will be displayed as "not safe to pass
over".
If the safe passing depth is more than your safety depth contour, the isolated danger becomes insignificant. It will
only be displayed, if it is selected in the chart layers and according to a blue Symbol.
2.9
Continuous Safety Watch
2.9.1 Safety Frame 1
The size of the "Safety Frame" can be set by the user.
This frame will be used for a chart data analysis and for the generation of “Antigrounding alerts” and “Area alerts”.
2.9.2 Safety Frame 2
You will find the settings for the "Safety Frame" on the “Safety Alerts” page in the "Monitoring" panel.
2.9.3 Safety Frame 3
The "Safety frame" compares the ship’s position, the course and the speed, with the best available ENC chart data.
The best available ENC chart will be chosen even if another chart is being viewed on the screen.
The alert will be generated when the danger to navigation appears within the "Safety frame", as well as when it
crosses safety contour or area type objects.
To set the "Safety frame", select the size and choose which actions are allowed and which should trigger an alert.
2.9.4 Safety Frame 4
"Ahead": Input of an advance time to generate alerts.
The time value defines the length equal to the distance that is covered by the ship which continues at the current
SOG.
"Port": To set the width of the corridor to the left of the ship.
"Starboard": To set the width of the corridor to the right of the ship.
"Show safety frame": To display the safety frame on the ECDIS.
Note: Even when "Show safety frame" is not activated, the highlighted alerts within the "Safety frame" will still be
visible in the "Chart Display Area".
To hide the coloured frame, deactivate the "Highlight Danger" button.
2.9.5 Alarm Settings
There are several options for activating or deactivating the “Safety Alerts” in order to control the information about
possible chart dangers received.
On the “Safety Alerts” page of the "Monitoring" panel you can adjust the "Safety Alerts" to your requirements.
2.9.6 Antigrounding Alerts
One option is the “Antigrounding alerts”. The alerts depend on your defined parameters.
Deactivation of "Antigrounding Alerts" is password protected. Also, deactivating any of the "Antigrounding Alerts"
including the “Highlight Danger” function and some of the “IMO Areas” will display an indication “SF CNT” in the
upper left hand corner of the “Chart Display Area”.
Note: For route monitoring you may select which source of safety parameters you will use, either "From route" or
"Fixed".
2.9.7 Area Alerts
"Area Alerts" are divided into different areas, “IMO Areas” and “Additional Areas”.
2.9.8 Filter / Prioritise
If you select the respective button, you can activate or deactivate “Area Alerts”.
These alerts are based on individual needs and on the nautical necessities.
You can indirectly prioritise certain alerts.
2.10
2.10.1
Information Query / Pick Report
The Info Function
To obtain general information on the vector chart, use the Info function.
To use this function click on the "i" button on the "Chart panel bar". A free cursor appears in the chart which can be
positioned on the object.
With a left-click on the point of interest you can open the "Info" panel which will display the available information.
2.10.2
The Information Panel
The "Information" panel offers information about all objects and areas which are touched by the cursor.
To highlight and view the data on the required object or area, click on the "+" symbol.
2.10.3
Data Card Sub Function
There are two data card functions:


When you position the "View" cursor on a target or on a waypoint, the cursor has the form of a small square.
When you position the "View" cursor on a point of interest in the chart where object data are available, the
cursor has the form of a square with an "i".
With a left-click the corresponding data cards are displayed.
3 Chart Work
Although the introduction of the electronic chart offers the possibility to perform complex tasks on various chart
databases directly at one workstation, it still has to be capable of performing traditional chart work.
3.1
Chart Database and Manual Chart Selection
3.1.1
Lists
All charts are listed on the “Charts” panel. You can choose between the “Complete list" which shows all the charts in
the ship's folio, or the “By position” list which includes only charts covering the ship's position.
3.1.2
Chart Selection From Lists
You can select and display a chart from the list by double clicking on the entry in the list. Alternatively, select a chart
in the list and click [Load Chart] to display it.
The list can be sorted into ascending or descending order by selecting from the following column title:

Activate the chart search function by entering the “Chart Number” in the input field and clicking [Find] button. The
chart will be highlighted in the list. It can be displayed by clicking [Load Chart] button.
Note: Use the "Ahead" symbol or "Position Dropped" button to bring back the ownship back into the "Chart Display
Area".
3.1.4
Multiloading
The information in the chart display area changes as when the ownship is situated within the different installed
charts. Sometimes several charts are displayed simultaneously on the screen. Click on the "arrow down" [▼] button
in the "Chart area window" to view the available charts for the ship's position and manually select the chosen scale.
If the selected chart is not the largest scale available in the ship's position, an indication "Larger ENC" will be
displayed at the upper left corner of the "Chart display area".
The most convenient way is to activate the function “Autoload” by clicking the [ON] button in the "Chart autoload"
under "Charts" task. If "OFF" or "FIX" has been selected, directly click on the [Autoload] button next to "Chart area
window" to display the most detailed charts of the scale set.

Between 1 : 1,000 and 1 : 7,500 the bar length is 10 x 1 cable, between 1: 10,000 and 1: 75,000 it is 10 x 1 nm,
between 1:100,000 and above the bar length is 5 x 10 nm.
Below 1: 1000 and above 1:100,000,000 the bar is not displayed.
3.3
3.3.1
EBL, VRM and Additional Measuring Tools
Using the Cursor
Change the cursor appearance to the "ERBL" cursor by a series of right clicks in the "Chart display area" and click on
any object in the chart to determine the bearing and range from the ownship. This will be displayed in the "ERBL"
information window.
3.3.2
Second Click
After a second click on the left button, the cursor changes to the second form of the graphic cursor. Move the cursor
to the selected point of interest to get the bearing and range based on the centred point.
3.3.3
The “ERBL” Display
Change the data in the “ERBL” display by pressing “Tab” to edit the position or bearing and range manually.
Use the arrows or cursor to select the input fields, confirm your input with “Enter” and finish with [Apply].
3.3.4
The “EBL/VRM” Window
The “EBL/VRM“ window is intended for activating and adjusting two independent "EBL/VRMs".
Click on [EBL 1] button and enter the value of bearing in the input field, then press "Enter" to display the "EBL" in the
"Chart Display Area". The same procedure will be followed with "VRM 1" activation.
If it is necessary to use additional "EBL/VRM", click the [EBL/VRM 2] tab and activate it in the same way with
"EBL/VRM 1".
3.3.5
The “EBL/VRM” Display Control Panel
To set the base point of the first "EBL/VRM" pair relative to the ship's position, click on [Offset] button. The base
point will become stationary and bearing and distance will be specified in the "EBL" and "VRM" boxes.
If it is required that the "EBL/VRM" centre moves in accordance with the ownship, release the [Fixed] radio button.
3.3.6
Hardware Control Panel
The EBL and VRM buttons on the keybord can also be used to adjust the values.
3.3.7
Quick Distance Tool
The "Quick Distance Tool" can be accessed from the "Chart Panel Bar".
You can select either rhumb line or great circle to measure a distance.
Then the cursor will change to the graphic cursor and you can select the first point on the chart. Left-click there and
then repeat it for as many points as necessary.
The distance from one point to the next will be displayed in a textbox, together with the bearing and the total
distance.
End the function with a right-click or the [Cancel] button.
3.3.8
Enter Coordinates Manually
Coordinates can also be entered manually. Select the tool and press the [Tab] button to access the text boxes. The
bearing, opposite bearing and range are displayed below the coordinates.
Alternatively, you can enter bearing and distance and the coordinates of the second point will be automatically
displayed.
3.4
3.4.1
Create and Modify User Map Objects
Maps Panel
Creating user map objects can be done in the "Maps" panel which can be opened by clicking the [Maps] check box in
the "Tasks List".
The panel is composed of the following buttons:








"Show/hide maps" - to turn on/off the map display
"Loaded maps" - displays the list of loaded maps
"Set focus on maps" - to focus on monitored map
"Add objects" - contains list of object categories
"Edit objects" - contains list of functions
"Save" - saves the map
"Monitoring/Editor" - show maps in monitoring or editor mode
"Options" - to minimize and maximize the panel
It also displays pages by clicking the individual tab such as Maps, Find Object, Display Options and Tracks.
In the "Maps" tab, there are three disabled buttons on the right side:
"Monitoring" to monitor the selected map,
"Load" to load the chosen map, and
"Delete" to delete the map
They will only be available once the [Select/Clear all] radio button has been clicked or listed maps are checked in the
"Maps page".
3.4.2
Create New Maps
To create a new map, click on [Loaded maps] button, and click [Create new map].
The default map name will be "NEWMAP01*".
Note: The asterisk in the name means that the map has not yet been saved or changes have been made. Unsaved
maps are not synchronised with other work stations.
3.4.3
Create Symbols
To create a symbol on the map, click [Add objects] and select [Symbol]. Click the current symbol Library button and
select a library from the drop down list. Choose a symbol and enter additional information in the text boxes, then
choose a colour.
Click the [Start] and [End] radio buttons to display the objects for a specific period of time. Change the value in the
input field, right click on it and select [Apply]. Then click on the [Danger] radio button and enable [Clear attribute
fields for every new object] if necessary.
Click "Add object" and left-click on the desired chart position to place the symbol. The mode button will switch to
"Editor". Alternatively, press [Tab] to add an object by position. Right click to end the process.
Note: If the button name is one of the categories, click the arrow down [▼] button beside it, to display the drop
down list of categories.
3.4.4
Create Lines and Texts
To create a line, click the arrow down [▼] button beside the active category and select [Line]. Choose the line and
annotate if necessary, then click [Add object]. Left-click on the chart to place the first point of the line and move the
cursor to form the desired line.
If you want to put text on the chart, click the arrow down [▼] button again and select [Text]. Enter the text and click
[Add object], set the position of the text on the chart with a click.
3.4.5
Create Depths and Shapes
To add "Depths" on the chart, click on the arrow down [▼] button for category and select [Depth] in the drop down
list. Enter the value in the input field and click [Add object], then click on the chart to position it.
You can also add different shapes by selecting [Shapes], then the arrow down [▼] button to choose either "Ellipse,
Rectangle, Sector, Polygon or Circle" and select the type of "Line" and "Fill" including the colour.
Click the button name and position the center point by clicking on the chart and moving the cursor to outline the
shape, then click again to place it.
3.4.6
Edit Objects
You can edit previously created objects by clicking on “Edit Objects” and selecting [Edit]. An orange acquisition
marker appears on the chart; move the cursor to the required object and click to open the "Edit window".
Modify the object either by replacing it or adding text, information and "Danger" attributes as well. Click [Apply] to
confirm the changes.
Note: If the button name is one of the functions, click the arrow down [▼] button beside it, to display the drop down
list of functions.
3.4.7
Shift Objects
If an object requires moving, click on the "arrow down" [▼] button and select [Shift].
Click on the object, move the cursor to the required position and click to drop it.
3.4.8
Colour Corrections
You can choose if you want to see the symbols in colour or monochrome by clicking the [Colored] button under
"Display Options".
3.5
3.5.1
Delete User Map Objects
Delete an Object
To delete an object, click on the "arrow down" [▼] button and select [Delete] function. Left-click on the object to be
deleted.
If you click on one point or leg of a line, the whole line will be deleted. The deleted objects can be displayed again by
clicking the [Deleted] button of the "Display Options".
3.5.2
Restore an Object
The "Restore" function can be used to bring back deleted objects.
To restore an object, check that the [Deleted] button is active. Click on the "arrow down" [▼] button and select
[Restore], then click the deleted object to be restored.
3.6
3.6.1
Manage User Maps
Save Maps
All added user objects can be saved in the map. To do this, click on [Save] button, change the map name and add
comments if necessary. Confirm with [Save].
3.6.2
Unload/Load Maps
To unload a map, click the [Map name] button and click [X]. The unloaded map will be inserted into the list on the
"Maps" page.
Saved maps can be loaded for editing or monitoring. Click the respective check boxes of the maps to be loaded or
alternatively click the [Select/Clear All] radio button to select all in the list and click the [Load] button for editing. All
created user objects in the loaded maps will appear in the "Chart Display Area".
3.6.3
Monitor Maps
Editing objects is restricted during monitoring. To monitor a map, choose the map by clicking the adjacent check box
in the map list and click the [Monitoring] button.
Alternatively, select the loaded maps for monitoring by clicking the box to the left of the map name; an anchor
symbol will appear.
3.6.4
Delete Maps
You can delete a map by clicking the adjacent check box and then selecting [Delete]. Then acknowledge by clicking on
[OK]. Maps that are loaded into the layer cannot be deleted because they will not appear in the "Maps" tab.
3.6.5
Maps
On the "Maps" page, four columns are available:




"!" - marked if the map contains danger
Name - name of the map
Info - information about the map
Check box - column for check boxes
Entries can be sorted by clicking the first to third column title.
3.6.6
Find Objects
The “Find Object” function can be used to quickly search for objects on the selected and loaded map. The table
shows the created user map objects and their attributes.
The coordinates of the chosen object are displayed in the "points" column.
A double-click in the respective row, displays the symbol in the chart centre and the object is highlighted with a
flashing circle.
3.6.7
Display Options
Click on [Display Options] tab to selectively display the user map objects by enabling or disabling the different
buttons under "Objects, Attributes, and Display Options". The track transparency can also be adjusted into five
settings by clicking the relevant button.
3.6.8
Tracks
To show the ownship/target track as a user map object, click on the [Tracks] tab and change the colour of the track by
clicking the entry. Check the "Record" tick box to start recording the relevant data.
Select between "Time" and "Distance" for "Record settings". For "Coverage area XTD" input the desired value in the
field.
3.7
3.7.1
LOP Position Fix
Establish Process
Note: Before activating the "Manually Fix Position" feature in the "FreePlay" mode and during the exam (TestMe),
click on the button. The displayed "Multipanel" window in the chart pane has to be used to operate the function.
This procedure needs only to be used within the training software. The on-board ECDIS is working as will be
described in this topic. There is no need to open the separate pop-up window.
To access the Lines of Position function, select the "Manually Fix Position" panel from the multi panel display. You can
make up to 6 LOPs either by bearing, by distance or by bearing and distance.
3.7.2
Establishing via Bearing
If you want to use a “Bearing” to establish the first LOP.
Click the [Bearing] button and enter the measured data.
You can put a name in the text box and click [Apply]. The bearing line with a time stamp will be displayed as blinking
red on the chart. And the reference point is the ship's position.
3.7.3
Move and Reference Function
To connect the LOP with the chosen reference object, click the [Move and reference] button.
The bearing line will now be connected to the cursor.
Move it to the observed fixed object and drop it with a click.
3.7.4
Establishing via Distance
To establish the second LOP using “Distance”, click the number [2] LOP button, then select [Distance] and enter the
measured data in the distance input box.
If the [Automatic jump to new LOP] radio button has been activated, the next LOP will be available directly after
clicking [Apply]. The distance circle with time stamp is displayed as blinking red.
Click again the number [2] LOP button and click [Move and reference] button to move the centre point of the
distance circle to the reference object. Click again to drop it.
3.7.5
Establish via Brg/ Dist
Another method for creating a LOP is via “Brg / Dist”.
Click on it, enter the measured data and click [Apply].
A red distance circle and a bearing line with a time stamp will blink in the chart. Move and drop the centre point to
the reference object as previously explained.
3.7.6
Snap Function
If you have activated the “Snap” function, the reference point of the LOP will automatically move to the closest
conspicuous object on the chart within a range of 0.5 NM.
3.7.7
Accept a Position Fix
To accept the position fix that results from the 2 LOPs, click [Accept position].
When the vessel is navigating in dead reckoning mode it will move automatically to the accepted position. Otherwise,
DR mode can be activated later in the "Sensors" task panel.
The "Set by cursor" function can be used to move the vessel to the correct position.
3.7.8
Position Offset
You can manually enter a position offset for each DGPS in the "Sensors" task panel.
Click in the "Offset" box, enter the required values then confirm with the "Enter" key and the ownship will be moved
to the corrected position. Use the "Set Offset By" and select "Cursor" to move the vessel by cursor instead.
To cancel the position offset click [Cancel Offset].
3.8
3.8.1
Event Marker / MOB
Event Marker
An event marker can be placed on the ownship track to mark a particular position.
Press the [Event] button in the control panel to open the pop-up window, select the user and enter the password.
You can enter a comment in the field above, which will be saved in the ECDIS logbook, if the "Ship Logbook" is
licensed. Then click "Ok" to place the marker.
3.8.2
Activate MOB
In the event of a "Man-Over-Board" incident it's always advisable to mark the position where it happened.
You can mark the position with the MOB function. To activate it either click the [MOB] icon or press the MOB key on
the keyboard for few seconds.
The position will be marked on the chart and an extra MOB panel appears showing important information about the
event. You can either move the panel to your chosen position or close it and access the information through the
normal multipanel display.
3.8.3
MOB Information
After the man over board function has been activated, the MOB panel displays:




Coordinates of MOB mode activation;
Time elapsed since MOB mode was activated;
Bearing from the ship's current position to the activation point;
Distance from the ship's current position to the activation point.
If the activation was delayed, you can use the "Set time..." button to enter the time of the event and the MOB icon
on the chart will be moved to a corresponding former position.
Alternatively, if you have the exact position of the incident, you can use the "Set pos..." instead.
The enabled button "Show seek circle" will display a red coloured MOB centre point seek circle which will be
expanding at the set rate in the input field. Turn off the seek circle display as required by releasing the button.
3.8.4
Deactivate MOB / Log
To deactivate the MOB function after the man over board maneuver has been completed, press the MOB button
again and confirm the dialogue.
Activation and deactivation of the MOB function automatically creates a logbook event.
4 Alert Management
The ECDIS implements alerts as per Bridge Alert Management (BAM).
This helps to improve the handling, forwarding and presentation of alerts.
In doing so, it harmonises the priority, classification, handling, distribution and presentation of alerts, meaning that
the bridge team can devote its full attention to the safe operation of the ship and immediately identify any alert
situation requiring action to maintain the safe operation of the ship.
4.1
4.1.1
List of Alerts
Alerts Window
All types of alerts are displayed in the "Alerts window" located in the top part of the ECDIS task screen, to the right of
the "HDG/STW/COG/SOG "window.
4.1.2
Indications Window
"Indications" are displayed in the [Indications Window] on the Control panel.
Indications show regular information and conditions and are not part of alert management.
A new indication is shown by a "Message Symbol", click the button to show the list.
The following indications are implemented in the system: "Default Safety Contour" and "No ENC available".
4.1.3
Important Indications
"Important Indications" highlight operational status information which needs special attention.
This can be displayed in different places on the ECDIS task screen. Important Indications related to the chart
information are displayed in the top left corner of the chart panel in black against a yellow background.
4.1.4
Notifications
"Notifications" are used to inform the user of an event which is not directly related to navigation and not regulated
by standards. Notifications are displayed in the top right corner of the chart panel.
4.1.5
Display of Alerts
There three types of alert are presented in the alert buttons:



Alarms - high priority alert. Condition requiring immediate attention and action by the bridge team, to
maintain the safe navigation of the ship
Warnings - condition requiring immediate attention, but no immediate action by the bridge team. Warnings
are presented for precautionary reasons but may become dangerous if no action is taken
Cautions - lowest priority of alert. Condition which does not warrant an alarm or warning, but still requires
attention.
Alarms are associated with a sound signal, 3 beeps every 7 seconds.
Warnings are associated with a sound signal, 2 beeps every 5 minutes.

4.2.1
Alert Handling
Alerts Lists
Click on the alert button to open a pull-down list of alerts.
At the beginning of the list, there are active unacknowledged alerts arranged in the ascending order of age. If the
alert is unacknowledged, the name of its source is blinking. The age of the alert is specified to the right of the alert.
The second half of the list contains active acknowledged alerts.
Alerts in this part of the list are sorted by their acknowledgment time, the most recently acknowledged alert is
placed at the very top.
4.2.2
Alert Name
The alert name is preceded by the name of its source.
The name of the alarm source is shown in red colour.
The name of the warning source is shown in orange colour.
The name of the caution source is shown in yellow colour.
4.2.3
Alert Group
When two or more alerts belonging to the same group are generated, they are combined into one group name.
Click on the "plus" ( + ) sign to display the list of alerts included in the group.
Positioning the free cursor on the alert name in the list, displays a hint showing the detailed alert name.
4.2.4
Alert Acknowledgement
There are two types of alert acknowledgement:
SILENCING - acknowledgement of the alerts audible sound
ACKNOWLEDGEMENT - acknowledgement of visual announcement
4.2.5
Acknowledgement via Keyboard
Click the [ALARM] button on the keyboard. The most recently generated alarm will be acknowledged. By pressing
successively, the [ALARM] button all the alarms can be acknowledged in the reverse order to which they were
generated.
4.2.6
Acknowledgement via Alert List
Click the [Alarms] and [Warnings] buttons on the Control Panel and click the alert from the pull-down list of alarms or
warnings.
4.3
Sources of Alerts
4.3.1
Safety Alerts
Chart objects are identified by the ECDIS as dangers to navigation by certain parameters, such as safety parameters,
e.g. "Safety contour". Alert settings and options are adjusted in the [Safety Alerts] page of the [Monitoring] panel.
The main means of determining the safety alerts operation is the "Safety Frame".
Dangerous objects entering the Safety Frame will generate a relevant alert.
4.3.2
Generation of Safety Alerts
Safety alerts are generated for the following chart objects:




Dangers to navigation - if [Nav. hazard] radio button is activated, the "Navigational hazard" caution will be
generated.
If [Highlight Danger] radio button is activated, the navigation danger will be highlighted on the chart.
Safety contours - if the [Safety contour] radio button is activated, the "Crossing safety contour" alarm will be
generated.
Area type objects if activated under the [Area alerts] group, divided to [IMO areas] and [Additional areas].
4.3.3
Navigational Alerts
Navigational alerts are intended for alerting the navigator to the change of own ship and chart information display
conditions.
If the user-set value of difference between the positioning system readings is exceeded, provided the [Prim/Sec
diverged] radio button is activated, the [Position monitor] caution is generated.
4.3.4
Navigational Alert - Sounder Depth
"Sounder depth" is a set minimum depth, which the "Sounder depth" alarm will be generated if a shallower depth is
received from the sounder.
4.3.5
Navigational Alert - Anchor Watch
A warning will be generated if the ship moves beyond the anchor rings.
See Unit 10.4 "Anchoring Display" for the details.
4.3.6
Route Alerts
Route alerts are generated during sailing if the ship has exceeded the boundary of a set limits:
The alert is generated according to the following principles:





If the ship's COG deviates from the plotted ship's course by a value exceeding the setting in the [Off leg
course] input window, the "Course difference" caution will be generated;
If the ship's deviation from the route leg exceeds the set value, the "Off-Track" alarm will be generated;
If the ship schedule is not observed, "Ahead the schedule" or "Behind the schedule" warning will be
generated;
As the ship approaches the next WPT, the "Approach to critical point" warning will be generated upon
approach to the WOL at the advance time (or distance) set by the user;
As the ship passes the last WPT on the monitored route, the "End of track" warning is generated.
The aforementioned alerts are enabled and their parameters are set on the [Route Monitoring] page of [Monitoring
panel].
4.3.7
Sensor Alerts - Position Sensor
Sensor alerts indicate an absence of data from external sensors. Sensor alerts will only be generated if data is absent
from a connected sensor which has been selected by the user as a data source.
Example of position sensor alerts:
"Warnings" for a position sensor selected for primary positioning and "Cautions" for a position sensor selected for
secondary positioning.
If there are more than one of such warnings or cautions, they are combined in a position failure group.



Sensor Alerts - Main Sensor
Warnings are generated for sensors which have been selected as the main sensor.

Cautions are generated for sensors which have been selected for as supplementary position sensor, if there are more
than one of such cautions, they are combined in an "AUX Sensor failure" group.

4.3.10 Sensor Alerts - Auxiliary Sensors
Cautions are generated for the auxiliary sensors which are not directly related to the navigation.
Example:

"WIND: no input".
4.3.11 Sensor Alerts – Fallback
Should the primary data source fail, the backup data source will be used automatically.
In this case a caution will be generated; example, "Position Fallback".
5 Sensors
The ECDIS displays the vessel position, speed and course in real time on the chart, based on information received
from navigational sensors.
Therefore, thorough knowledge of the management and handling of sensors and interpreting the related alarms is
crucial to the safety of navigation.
5.1
5.1.1
Sensor Display
Sensor Source Basic Data
The “Primary and Secondary Window” and the "COG/SOG/HDG/STW" window on the "Control Panel" display the
basic sensor data.
5.1.2
Display Options
The navigation data can be displayed together with its sensor source in different ways:



On the "Navigator" panel from the "Multipanel Display";
On an additional panel through the extra window button;
On the left sidebar for conning information.
5.1.3
Time Zone
The “Time Zone” is displayed in the "Control Panel".
Use the “Clock” button for switching to the ship's time.
5.1.4
Wind
The wind sensor provides data about the wind speed and direction.
Wind information can be displayed in 4 ways:




On "System Information" ("True" and "Relative Wind")
On the left sidebar ("True" and "Relative Wind").
[Wind Vector] on the "Route Monitoring" tab in the "Monitoring Panel".
[Wind Card] on the "Route Monitoring" tab in the "Monitoring Panel".

Health Status & Alerts
Health Status (Colour Code)
If the Navi-Sailor does not receive sensor data or only receives incomplete information from the sensor, e.g. "DGPS1"
will be marked orange and the sensor data will be replaced by orange symbols.

Sensor Alerts
A warning will be generated when a sensor that has been selected as an information source, e.g. primary or
secondary position sensor, delivers incorrect or incomplete data or no data at all.

Integrity Check
Validity and Accuracy of Sensor Data
Similar to the health status, orange coloured "*" symbols will be displayed if the sensor has not passed the
plausibility check.
If the sensor data does not pass the validity checks, the data is still shown, but is marked orange.

Sensor Hierarchy/Fall-back Chain
Default Primary Sensor
As you can see on the “Ship Position” page in the menu “Sensors”:
"DGPS 1" has been selected as your default primary sensor.
5.4.2
Select “SEC” Fallback-Sensor
If you select, for example "DGPS 2" as your “SEC” sensor, it will automatically be your fallback sensor in case your
“PRIM” sensor fails.
The button will be highlighted after selecting.
5.4.3
Predefined Software Hierarchy
In the case of a “PRIM” sensor breakdown, a warning will inform you about a sensor fault.
If, e.g., DGPS 2 has been selected as your “SEC” sensor, it will become active after a specified period for fallbacksensor activation, which is configured by the manufacturer.
5.4.4
Secondary Position Sensor
If "DGPS 1" is available again, it will automatically be restored as the “PRIM” sensor.
After you confirm the question in the “POS source restore” in the popup window, "DGPS1" will be restored as the
“PRIM” sensor.

The “SEC” position source is used as a fallback-function.
It can be found on the “Ship position” page on the “Sensors" panel.
If the “SEC” position source is not set, there will not be an automatic switch to a backup.

Note: The number of "Different position sources" may differ from vessel to vessel.
GPS is normally the standard sensor and dead reckoning should only be used when GPS data is not available.
Estimated Position is similar to DR but takes into account additional data on currents and drift. Echo reference needs
ARPA data to constantly correct the ships position depending on the range and bearing to stationary objects.

5.7.1
Heading / Course Sensor
Heading (Gyro)
The settings of heading sources can only be done at a station with the status "MASTER".
On the “Heading” page you can select the heading source.
To select the main source of heading, click the button.
The data of the main source will be used for all calculations in the system.
5.7.2
Gyro Error
If your gyro compass is not correct, the gyro input can be corrected. Click into the text box "Gyro error" and enter a
value between - 5° and + 5°.

5.8.1
Speed (STW/SOG) Sensor
STW/SOG (Log)
Settings of speed sources can only be done at a station with the status "MASTER".
On the “Speed” page you can select a source of speed.
The group “STW Sources” displays all of the connected speed through the water sensors.
Speed data for “STW” is received from the log.
If the log is not connected, you can enter STW data in the “STW Sources” group manually.
The group “SOG Sources” displays all of the connected speed over ground sensors.
The speed data “COG/SOG” can be received from the “Positioning System”, "Log" and "ER".
You can enter “Drift” and “Set” manually.

Where to Find Time Zone Settings
You can find and change settings of date and time on the "Time Zone" page of the "Configuration" panel.
5.9.2
Setting of Current Time Zone
Under “Current Time Zone Settings” the following options are available:



UTC Time (not changeable, generally obtained by GNSS)
Ship’s Time (changeable, dateline will automatically be recognized)
Time Zone (changeable, difference west- or eastwards to UTC)
5.9.3
Time Zone Takeover
Please note that after changing the time zone settings, your ship’s time will also change.
A "Time zone changed" notification will appear on the display.
5.9.4
Scheduled Time Zone Change
You can change your ship’s time according to your individual schedule by entering date and time.
To activate this change function, click on the radio button.
The ship’s time will change automatically at the specified time.
6 Route Planning
Route planning is one of the most essential tasks performed on the ECDIS.
A thorough knowledge of route planning is required by the user in order to ensure safe navigation for the entire
voyage and to comply with the general requirements of voyage plans, and specific instructions given by the safety
management systems of shipping companies and charterers.
6.1
6.1.1
Route Creation and Modification
Route Planning
To create a new route, open the "Route Planning" panel from the "Tasks List" then click on the [New] button.
The cursor is now active and the first waypoint can be positioned.
6.1.2
Load Existing Plan
To load an existing route, click on [Load route] button then select the required route from the dropdown list.
6.1.3
Focus
To display the entire route on "Chart Display Area" at a suitable scale, click on the [Focus] button.
6.1.4
Multiroutes Colour
Depending on their purpose, the routes are displayed on the "Chart Display Area" in the following way:



All loaded routes, except the route open for editing, are coloured orange.
A loaded route which is open for editing is displayed in the colour blue.
A currently monitored route is displayed in the colour red.
To select the loaded route for editing, click on route name tab in the "Route Planning" panel.

Route Planning Tables
The "Route Planning" tables are grouped as follows:



"Waypoints" - WPT, Name, Position, Leg Type, Leg, Total Distance, X PORT X STBD, Turn Radius
“Schedule" - WPT, Name, ETA, Stay, Time Zone, ETD, TTG, Total Time, Speed, Average Speed
"Extra Data" - WPT, Name, Remarks, Draught, UKC, Ref. Point, BRG/Dist, Safety contour, Safety Depth
Click on the respective button to toggle between tables.
6.1.6
Change Data
To change the data inside the cell, double-click on it.
Input the data using the keyboard and confirm with [Enter].
Note: Input can only be entered in columns which are categorised in the following instructions.
6.1.7
Waypoints Table Data
User input data:





Name - waypoint name;
Position - waypoint latitude and longitude coordinate;
Leg Type - route leg type (RL or GC) from the previous to the current WPT, set by the operator; all route leg
calculations refer to the WGS-84 reference datum;
X PORT / X STBD - Cross track distance Port and Cross track distance Starboard.
Turn Radius - operator-set radius of the arc for the display of an approximate ship track on the turn.
Calculated Data:



WPT - waypoint number;
Leg - course and distance from the previous to the current WPT;
Total Distance - summary distance between the initial (0) and current WPT by the route legs.
6.1.8
Schedule Table Data
User input data:





ETA - Estimated time of arrival at waypoint
Stay - Time of stay at waypoint
Time Zone - Time zone at waypoint
ETD - Estimated time of departure from waypoint
Speed - Planned speed on each leg
Calculated data:



TTG - Time to go to next waypoint;
Total Time - Total time calculated from waypoint 0
Average Speed - Calculated average speed on each leg based on related input data and leg distance.
Note: ETA, ETD and Speed can also be calculated data.
6.1.9
Extra Data Table
The "Extra Data" table can be completed manually or automatically.
To start the "Data Collection" function, fill the "Draught" cells and click on the [Voyage plan] button.
In the "Data Collection" group, check the checkboxes then click on [Start data collection] button.
The "Safety Contour" and "Safety Depth" data are obtained from "Route Settings" in the "Config" panel.
Additionally, for the reference point you may use the "Ref. Points" button in the "Route Planning" panel.
Click on the [Ref. Points] button, then click on the WPT on the chart area. Move the cursor over the preferred
reference point then click on it.
To deactivate this function, right click on your mouse button.
6.1.10 New Route and Edited Route
Save the route by clicking on the [Save] button.
6.1.11 Monitored Route
A monitored route can be edited in the “Route Planning” panel.
To save the edited and monitored route, click on the [Save] button and a confirmation window will open. Click on the
[Yes] button to continue and monitor the current edited route or click on the [No] button to cancel the operation.
6.2
6.2.1
Manage Routes
Rename Route
Open the "Route Planning" panel, double click on the name input field and use the keyboard to input a new name
then press the [Enter] key to confirm.
6.2.2
Unload Route
To unload the route, click on [Unload Route] button on the route name tab.
A confirmation window will pop up when unloading an unsaved route. Click on [Yes] to unload and save the changes.
Click on [No] to unload and disregard the changes or click on [Cancel] to cancel unloading route.
6.2.3
Delete Route
If you want to delete a route, make sure the route is not loaded for editing.
To delete a route, click on the [Edit Options] tab in the "Route Planning" panel.
In the "Operations" group, click on the [Delete] button then select the required route from the drop down list and
confirm by clicking on [Yes].
6.2.4
Reciprocal
If you want to reverse an existing route, open the "Edit Options" page, then click on the [Reverse] button from the
"Operations" group.
After activating the "Reverse" function, opposite courses are displayed in the table of the actual loaded route.
6.2.5
Shifting a Route
On the "Edit Options" page, click on the [Shift] button in the "Operations" group.
An acquisition marker will appearin the "Chart Display Area", whereas the right bottom part of the screen will display
the “Edit Route” information window.
Position the acquisition marker at any point on the loaded route then click.
The "Shift Route" information windows will be displayed in the bottom right of the screen.
The marker will change own form. Move the cursor to the required place and click again to shift the waypoints.
Right click to end the operation.
Note: All the waypoints on the selected route will be shifted by the selected distance and bearing.
6.2.6
Show/Hide Route Parameters
The "Show" button contains route parameters that can be shown or hidden on the "Chart Display Area".
To show or hide route parameters, click on the respective checkboxes in the "Show" drop down list.
6.2.7
Link To Function
You can link an existing route to another route via the “Link” function found on the “Edit Option" page of the "Route
Planning" panel.
Load a route then click on the [Link] button in the "Operations" group.
Select a route from the dropdown list to which the current route should be linked to. The end point of the existing
route will be linked to the starting point of the additional route. The WPTs will be renumbered.
6.2.8
Preview and Print Function
After the route plan has been created, it can be previewed and printed.
To preview the plan before printing click on [Preview] button in the "Print" group on the "Voyage plan" page.
To print the plan click on the [Print] button.
6.2.9
Upload Route
If the ECDIS is connected to an external device that has been set up in the system configuration utility during the
installation process, the "Upload" function may be used.
Open the "Voyage plan" page and click on the [Upload] button in the "Export" group. Select by clicking on the
required route from the drop-down menu. The route will be exported to the external device.
6.2.10 Export to Specific Format
The route can be exported into different formats such as Excel, PDF and HTML file.
To do so, click on the appropriate button in the "Export" group, then acknowledge by clicking on [OK] in the export
completion window.
The file can be accessed using the "Data Tool utility" feature via the System "Integrator".
6.3
6.3.1
Additional Features
Anchor Page
During route planning it is possible to assign safe anchorage parameters to a selected WPT.
The ownship length (Ship Length) specified in the "System Configuration utility" is used together with the following
parameters:





Drop Radius - the "inner" circle radius within which the anchor may occur when dropped. The zero setting
assumes that the anchor will be exactly on the WP position;
Cable Length - anchoring cable length (in "Meters" or in "Shackles"), cannot be lower than the depth value;
Safety Margin - additional range to ensure safe anchorage, can be set to zero;
Depth - estimated depth value in the anchoring position;
Swing Radius - radius of the "outer" circle, which is calculated.
You can set default values for "Cable Length" and "Safety Margin" in the "Route Setting" page of the "Config" panel.
6.3.2
Setting Anchorage Parameter
To set an anchorage parameter for one of the WPTs, open the "Anchor" page in the "Route Planning" panel and fill in
the input field of the appropriate parameter. Click on the [Select waypoint] button, move the cursor over the chosen
WP then click to assign the anchoring parameters.
A "Chart Objects" window will be displayed in the "Control Panel'.
While editing WPTs via "Graphic mode", sometimes it is helpful to show the anchor ring. To do this activate "Show
anchor rings" in the "Anchor" group.
6.3.3
Quick Distance Calculator
The "Quick Distance Calculator" allows the user to check distances between two WPTs.
Open "Edit Options" page, select waypoints from the "From WPT" and "To WPT" drop down lists.
6.3.4
Protection Control
To protect the saved route from changes, open the "Protection control" page in the "Route Planning " panel, then
click on the [Protect] button in the "Protection control" group. Letter "[P]" will then be added to the route name.
To remove the protection, click again on the highlighted [Protect] button.
6.3.5
Show/Hide Tables
During the creation of waypoints via graphic mode, it is more convenient to have a wide "Chart Display Area".
To achieve this, click on the [Show tables] button on the upper right hand corner of the "Route Planning" panel.
Click again the "Show tables" button to restore the full "Route Planning" panel.
6.4
6.4.1
Waypoint Creation - Default and Preset Settings
Waypoint Parameter Validity Area
All values for the route legs describe the leg towards the waypoint.
E.g. the XTD value for waypoint 1 specifies the corridor from waypoint 0 to waypoint 1.
6.4.2
Default Settings
The route default values can be set on the "Route Setting" page in the "Config" panel.
The set default values for "Safety Contour", "Safety Depth", XTD and "Turn radius" will be used automatically in the
"Route Planning" tables.
6.4.3
Edit Route Window
While using the "Waypoint Editor", the "Edit Route" window can be accessed by pressing the "TAB" key on the
keyboard. In this window the values can be altered.
6.4.4
AFill with same values
For an existing route, or for previously created waypoints on a new route, it is possible to change the values of an
entire column in the "Route Planning" tables.
To change the values for the whole column, or for a group of cells in the column, the "Fill cell" function can be used.
First adjust the value as required in one cell. Then right click on the adjusted cell and select "Fill cells down". All the
cells in the table directly below the selected cell will be changed to the adjusted value. Alternatively, "Fill cells up"
can be used to change all cells in the table directly above the selected cell.

WP Handling Graphic Mode
Advanced Cursor
The "Advanced Cursors" group can be accessed via the "Edit Options" page in the "Route Planning" panel.
The "Advanced Cursors" have the following functions:



"Head mark" - to display the line (Heading Mark) ahead of the cursor position in the direction of the plotted
route leg;
"Stern mark" - to display a line opposite to the “Heading Mark” from a waypoint;
"Mark" - to display two additional lines setting their angles relative to “Heading Mark” line;



"Distance marks" and "Distance rings" - to display range marks on the cursor lines in the form of notches or
concentric circles, set the distance between them in the box to the right.
"Wheel over line" - to choose the WOP position; taking into account the radius and lead distance (F-dist), the
system will automatically plot the waypoint accordingly;
"Light sectors" - to plot waypoints taking into account the lighthouse visibility range which is set in the box to
the right
6.5.2
Set WPT
The "Place first point" window will appear on bottom right part of the "ECDIS task" screen after clicking the "New"
button in the "Route Planning" panel.
The window displays the position of the cursor and bearing and distance from the ownship’s position.
6.5.3
Cursor Information Window
The "Place first point" window will appear on bottom right part of the "ECDIS task" screen after clicking the "New"
button in the "Route Planning" panel.
The window displays the position of the cursor and bearing and distance from the ownship’s position.
6.5.4
Add WPTs
Click again on the chart area to place the next WPT. It will automatically be named WPT “1”.
A blue dashed line connects the start point WPT "0" and the end point WPT "1" to a route.
With a continuous click on the chart area the succeeding WPTs will also be positioned.
By default, XTD lines are also shown.
6.5.5
Cursor Information Window (Add waypoint)
The "Add Waypoint" window will appear on bottom right part of the "ECDIS task" screen during the "Add WPTs"
operation. The window shows leg parameters and the present cursor position.
6.5.6
Insert WPTs
You can insert a WPT by clicking on the [WPT Editor] button and acquire the dashed line with a click, then click again
to place the WPT.
6.5.7
Move WPTs
Click on the [WPT Editor] button then position the cursor over the WPT to be moved. Click on the WPT and move the
cursor to the desired position and click again to drop it
6.5.8
Cursor Information Window (Move Waypoint)
The "Move Waypoint" window will appear on bottom right part of the "ECDIS task" screen during the operation.
The window shows leg parameters and the present cursor position.
Moving waypoint between WPTs will show BRG and distance from "Previous WP" and to "Next WP" and also the
total distance.
6.5.9
Deleting WPTs
To delete a WPT, make sure the route is loaded (see 5.1.1).
Activate the “WPT Editor” function and place the graphic cursor on the chosen WPT.
With a left click you acquire the WPT and with a right click you delete it.
6.5.10 Continue / Redraw a Route Leg
To continue or re-draw a route leg, activate the "WPT Editor".
Double left-click the last WPT and move the cursor on the required position then click to place the new WPT.
To cancel, deactivate the cursor with a double right click.
6.6
6.6.1
WP Handling Text Mode
New WPT
The first WPT will receive the numeric position “0” and will be the start point of your route.
Creating WPT "0" can be done as described in previous topic 5.2.2.
6.6.2
Adding WPTS
To add a WPT, double click on the "Position" cell of the blank row. Enter the coordinates using the keyboard, then
press the [Enter] key to plot the WPT.
6.6.3
Insert WPT
When you insert a new WPT, all other WPTs will be renumbered.
For example, to insert a new WPT between WPT "0" and WPT "1", highlight the entire row of WPT "1" by clicking on
its WPT number. Then right click to open the context menu and select "Insert waypoint".
The WPT "0" will stay the same but the last WPT will be renumbered WPT "2". The new WPT becomes WPT "1".
6.6.4
Changing Waypoint Position
To change WPT position, double click on the "Position" cell. Enter the coordinates using the keyboard, then press the
[Enter] key to confirm the changes.
6.6.5
Delete WPT
To delete a WPT, select the required row in the WPT column with a left-click.
Right-click the highlighted WPT line and select "Delete waypoints" in the context menu. A confirmation window will
appear. Click on [Yes] to confirm.
The selected line will be deleted and the subsequent lines will be renumbered.
6.6.6
Copy WPT
Highlight the required WPT by clicking on the WPT number in the WPT column.
Right click to open the context menu, then click on "Copy waypoints".
6.6.7
Paste WPT
To paste a waypoint, e.g. between WPT "0" and WPT "1", highlight the entire row of WPT "1" by clicking on the WPT
number. Right click to open the context menu then select "Paste waypoint".
6.6.8
Cut WPT
Highlight the required WPT by clicking on the WPT number in the WPT column.
Right click to open the context menu, then click on "Cut waypoints". A confirmation window will appear. Click on
[Yes] to confirm.

6.7.1
ETA Calculator
Schedule Calculation
In the "Route Planning" panel, switch the table to "Schedule". Input the following data according to your
requirements:




an "ETD" value for the start point,
an "ETA" value for the end point,
Speed of proceeding along the route legs.
"Time Zone" if you are travelling between different time zones.
To start the calculation, open the "Schedule Calculation" page, then click on the [Start schedule calculation] button.
6.7.2
"Tidal/ Surface current" Function
If you want to take the surface current conditions into account for the schedule calculations, activate the “Tidal
Currents” and “Surface Currents” checkboxes.
By clicking on the [Start schedule calculation] button, the schedule will be calculated and can be saved.
6.7.3
Managing Schedules
Creating multiple route schedules for one route is possible through the "Schedule" group on the "Schedule
Calculation" page of the "Route Planning" panel.
Click on the [Create Schedule] button, input the new data in the "Schedule" table, then click on the [Start schedule
calculation] button. You can save the schedule under a new name, by entering the name in the input field.
If you want to delete the calculated data, click on the [Clear Schedule] button.
To completely delete the saved schedule, click on the [Delete Schedule] button, then select the schedule from the
drop down list. A confirmation window will appear.
Click [Yes] to confirm.
6.8
Route Check
6.8.1
Execute a Route Check
To start a route check, open the "Route Planning" panel then click on the "Check Route" page.
Click on the [Start route checking] button in the "Check Route" group.
The progress is displayed and can be interrupted at any time by pressing the “Stop” button.
To complete the checking process you must restart by clicking on [Continue route checking] button. A confirmation
window will appear. Click on [Continue] to confirm.
6.8.2
Parameter Adjustment
The list of "Area alerts", "Antigrounding alerts" and the safety contour value used in the route check are displayed in
the "Safety Options" group.
You can select or unselect "Area alerts" and "Antigrounding alerts" listed in the "Objects to check"drop down list, on
the "Safety Alerts" page in the "Monitoring" panel.
The "Safety Contour" value in the "Route Check" can be changed on the "Route Planning" panel on the "Extra Data"
table.
6.9
6.9.1
Handling of Automated Route Check Alerts
Message Window
If the route check has revealed navigation dangers, a message will be displayed in the “Check Route” group window
on the "Check Route" page.
The message contains information about the number of alerts, on which route leg the danger has been detected, the
type of danger and chart number.
6.9.2
"Show on chart” Function
You can see the detected dangers on the set route segment promptly by clicking on the [Show danger on chart]
button.
The detected danger will be highlighted according to the alert created.
6.9.3
"Scroll to danger" Function
To view the detected dangers on the checked route segment successively, use the buttons “<” or “>”.
6.9.4
“Accept” Function
After accepting the "Check Route" result it will be entered into the voyage plan.
To accept the route checking results and exit the checking mode click on the [Accept route checking results] button. A
voyage plan report confirmation window will pop-up. Click on [Yes] to view the results or "No" to cancel.
6.9.5
Exit Route Check
To exit checking mode without accepting the results of the route check, click on the [Exit route checking] button.
7 Route Monitoring
The content of this module will show you how to monitor a route and provide familiarization with the route
monitoring feature that includes gathering of voyage progress information using the ECDIS functions.
7.1
7.1.1
Activate / Deactivate Planned Route
Via Monitoring Panel
One option for activating the route monitoring function of a route, that has been previously created on the "Route
Planning" panel, is to select the required route from the dropdown menu on the “Route Monitoring“ tab of the
"Monitoring" panel.
7.1.2
Via Route Editor Panel
Another option for activating voyage monitoring is to load the required route and then select the [Monitoring]
button on the "Route Planning" panel.
The currently monitored route will be displayed in red on the "Chart" panel.
7.1.3
Editing Monitored Route
While sailing on a monitored route, you can load and edit it on the "Route Planning" panel.
If you want to save the route, you must confirm that the current schedule will be unloaded from monitoring, or
alternatively save the route under a new name.
7.1.4
Unload Route Plan
To unload a monitored route, activate the “Unload” dropdown menu of the “Route Monitoring“ tab on the
"Monitoring" panel and unload “Route and Schedule” or just the “Schedule” if the time frame is irrelevant.
7.2
7.2.1
Display of Active Route Data & Alerts
Route Data via Control Panel
One option to obtain information on the sailing along the route, is “Route data” on the "Display panel" on the
"Control Panel".
7.2.2
Route Data via Conning Panel
Another way to display the data of the monitored route is at the left sidebar via the "Conning" panel.
There you select the “Route” tab.
7.2.3
Active Route Display
You can change which information about the active route is displayed in the "Monitoring" task using the "Route
Monitoring" tab.
The following information can be displayed on the chart:









XTD
Radius
WPT names
Wheel over lines
Sun/Moon
Course/Leg/Spd
Heading mark

7.2.4
Route Alerts
The "Route Monitoring" tab can also be used to configure the route alerts.
You can activate, deactivate or change the values for the "End of route" alert, the "Out of XTD" alert, the "Out of
schedule" alert, the "WPT approach" alert or the "Off leg course" alert.
When a route alert is triggered it is displayed in the alerts.
7.2.5
Next Waypoint Function
When you activate the monitoring of a route, the function "Next Waypoint" on the "Monitoring" panel will be
activated as well.
If you go to the "Route Data" menu on the "Multi Display" panel or the "Route" display via the left sidebar, this
functionality provides you with route data to a manually or automatically selected WPT.
7.2.6
ETA Calculator
You can calculate the "ETA" and "TTG" for any WPT while sailing along an activated and scheduled route by using the
calculator in the "Route Data" display of the "Control Panel".
You can enter the desired planned speed of proceeding to the specified point for the planned time of arrival (PTA)
calculation.
Alternatively, enter the desired planned time of arrival (PTA) to the specified point for the speed to go (STG)
calculation.
7.3
7.3.1
Own Ship Symbol
Ship Symbol
The Ownship can be displayed as a symbol or by contour.
Change the settings on the “Route Monitoring” page of the "Monitoring" panel.
The contour will only be displayed when the scale is appropriate to the ship dimensions.
7.4
Ship Direction Indicators
7.4.1
Ownship Vectors
There are 2 motion vectors:


"COG" vector - motion vector over the ground
"HDG" vector - vector of motion relative to the water
It is possible to display the two vectors at the same time.
7.4.2
Orientation
You can switch the ownship symbol display orientation along the ship’s true motion vector (COG) or along the ship’s
heading by the “Align by” on the “Route Monitoring” page.
7.4.3
Display of Vectors
To turn the display of the vectors on or off, click the buttons in the “Ship group”: "COG" vector or "HDG" vector.
7.4.4
Vector Length Values
To change the setting for the motion vector length, use the vector dropdown box in the "Control Panel" window.
The length can vary from 1 to 24 minutes.
The value defines the length of the displayed vector.
You can set a fixed vector length value, which does not change with the chart scale (Fixed).
7.4.5
Where to find
To display the track of a manoeuvre you can activate an “Expected Motion Line” (EML) of your ownship via the [Show
prediction] button on the “Predictor” page. This is found on the “Precision instruments” panel from the dropdown
list of the "Multi Display Panel" window.
The prediction points are displayed in ship symbols with current maneuvering parameters for a period of up to six
minutes and allows to spot turning tendencies.
7.4.6
Display of Prediction
By default, the[Outlined] button is not activated and all prediction points are displayed as a ship symbol.
Click on the [Outlined] button and all prediction points will be connected.
7.4.7
Deactivate Prediction
To deactivate the "Show prediction“ function press the button again and all prediction points will disappear.
7.4.8
Curved Heading Line
Curved Heading Lines (CHL) can be precalculated and displayed for up to two courses via the “CHL” function on the
“Precision Instruments” panel. This is found in the dropdown list of the "Multi Panel" and "CHL" window in the lower
section of the "Control Panel".
7.4.9
AP On/Off
When AP is set ON, it is not possible to change the CHL settings.
If the AP functionality is off, you can enter appropriate parameters for up to two CHLs such as the next CTW, Radius,
Length of predicted vector and delay.
Data can be entered in the text field or via 'Play' mode by scrolling the trackball.
7.4.10
CHL Display
The activated "CHL" is displayed in blue and the inactive "CHL" is displayed in pink.
7.4.11
Switch between CHLs
The parameters of CHL can be shown via the buttons “Show 1” and / or “Show 2”.
You can switch between the activated CHL by pressing button “Active 1/2”.
By pressing “Link” a curved headline can be generated for two upcoming courses.
7.5
7.5.1
Past Track Indicators
Display of Primary and Secondary Track History
Your past-track that is based on primary or secondary position source can be displayed on the “Route Monitoring”
page of the "Monitoring" panel under “Past Track settings”.
The track segment can be set into different colours, select the desired colour by clicking on the "Track Color"
selection box. Click on the side arrow to scroll the colour selection box.
The "Plot Interval" drop down button will show the pre-selected time of plotting interval.
Click on it and select the desired time in seconds from the drop-down list.
Select the desired time label from the drop-down list of pre-selected time label in minutes by clicking, on "Time
Label" drop-down button. Use "Own ship track" input line to enter the time value which the length of the displayed
own ship track will correspond to. Click on "Track history" drop-down button, a list of date will appear. Select the
desired date of the track required to be displayed. Click [Focus on Track] button to display the entire own ship track
for the selected date on the Chart panel.
Tick on/off the three checkboxes "Show time-labels", "Show primary track" and "Show secondary track/position" to
turn on/off the display of the corresponding checkboxes from the chart panel.
8 Chart Maintenance
The ordering, installation and updating of charts are facilitated by digitalisation.
This allows the operator to perform the tasks at any time if internet access is available.
Alternatively, the required updates can be received on DVDs via ship's mail on a regular basis.
8.1
8.1.1
Start-up and User Interface of the Navi Planner
Activate Navi-Planner
There are 2 options for starting the Navi-Planner:


Via the "Navi-Planner" button on the Transas Integrator
Via the "Navi-Planner" button in the "Charts" panel, in the "General" tab
Note: If installed on a normal computer, Navi-Planner can be started from the Windows start menu. During the
training
you can switch between your ECDIS and the Navi-Planner by opening the Client menu and clicking “Send Alt+Tab”.
By clicking “Send Alt+Tab” a second time, you will return to your ECDIS.
The following instructions will all take place in the Navi-Planner.
8.1.2
Basic Screen Layout of the Navi-Planner
The Navi-Planner 4000 screen is divided into the following areas:





Task Selection: Switch between the 4 main tasks and their subtasks
Ribbon: Quick access buttons for the selected task, grouped into tasks
Chart Panel: Display of the chart, the own ship and routes
Chart Panel Toolbar: A toolbar with chart work buttons, similar to the ECDIS
Task Information Tables: Display and input of information for the selected task
8.1.3
Tasks and Subtasks
There are 4 tasks in the Navi-Planner 4000:




Route: the creation and modification of routes
Charts: divided into the subtasks “Installed Charts”, “Chart Catalogue”, “External Storage” and “Orders
History”
Weather: an optional display of forecast information
Overlays: for “Maps”, “Tide/Current”, “AIO”, “Publications”, and “Port Data” overlays.
8.1.4
Navi-Planner Settings Window
Adjusting the Navi-Planner 4000 configuration can be done in the "Settings" window which can be opened by clicking
the [Show Settings] quick access button in the "Chart Panel bar".
8.1.5
Navi-Planner Licence Information
All information regarding the software product licence and specific version of the installed Navi-Planner 4000 can be
viewed by clicking the [Navi planner] button in the upper left corner of the screen and selecting [About] from the
drop-down menu.
8.2
8.2.1
Chart Catalogue, Overviews and Chart Formats
List of Charts
In the “Charts” tasks, a list of all installed charts can be viewed.
Select the “Installed Charts” subtask to open a task information table that contains the list of all installed charts.
This list contains all information about the charts:







the name of the chart
the chart scale
the date on which the chart received the latest update
the weekly "Notice to Mariners" which the chart is updated to
the expiry date of the chart licence
the chart format
the status of the licence
Note: When the Navi-Planner is first started up, an automatic scan for installed charts will be performed when the
“Installed Charts” subtask is selected.
8.2.2
Chart Formats
The Transas Navi-Sailor supports official vector charts (ENCs) and raster charts (RNCs) as required by the performance
standards.
In addition SENCs can be obtained directly from the manufacturer. These are already formatted and do not require a
long conversion process like other charts.
Private vector charts in the format TX-97 are also supported. However, these are not issued under the authority of a
national hydrographic office and they cannot be used for ECDIS operation mode.
8.2.3
Sorting the Chart List
By default, the list of charts is sorted according to the chart “Name”.
If required, it can also be sorted by “Scale”, “Last Update”, “Updated to” week, “Expires” date, chart “Format” or
“Status”.
8.2.4
Chart Frame
The chart frame can be displayed in the chart panel by double-clicking on the chart from the list. Use the [Zoom Out]
button until the chart frame is completely visible on the chart panel.
8.2.5
Chart Update Information
Information about the update status of charts can be viewed in the chart list.
The date when each chart was last updated is displayed in the “Last Update” column.
Only the date when the chart received the latest update is listed.
The column “Updated to” lists the relevant weekly Notice to Mariners which the chart has been updated in
accordance with.
8.2.6
Chart Searching
The “Installed Charts” subtask also contains a search function enabling you to search for the name of a specific chart.
Click into the “Find chart” field and enter the name or a part of the name. Then press the “Enter” key or click on the
[Find] button.
8.2.7
Chart Reports
You can create reports to summarise the status of the charts or the latest activities.
Click on the “Create Report” button in the "Install" page and select a report from the pop-up menu:






“Last operation” – displays the most recently performed chart operation
“Last week operations” – displays all chart operations done during the last week
“Last month operations” – displays all chart operations done during the last month
“All installed charts status” – lists the status of and information about, all installed charts
"Route Filtered" – filters the chart status report according to the charts affected by a selected Route
"View Certificates" – contains "Subscription Certificate"
8.3
8.3.1
Chart Supply
Ordering Chart Catalogue
An up to date chart catalogue ensures that the latest valid chart cells will be selected for the chart order.
To order a new chart catalogue:







Open the [Charts] task in the Navi-Planner 4000
Select the [Order] tab
The “Request for Data” group contains all buttons for ordering new data.
Click on the [Catalogue] button to open the “Request” window
Select the Catalogue format, either the official Transas SENC catalogue or the private chart catalogue TX-97.
You can also choose if you want a weekly catalogue update or just a single update.
Press [Next >>] and the order will be processed.
If the ECDIS station is connected to the internet you can send your request directly by clicking the [Send
request] radio button.
If the computer has no direct internet connection you can save the request on your disk and transfer it to
your e-mail computer e.g. via an USB flash drive. Select the [Save to Disk] radio button and enter the e-mail
address to which the ordered file should be sent.
Confirm your order by pressing the [Finish] button.
If you choose [Save to Disk] a pop-up window for selecting the storage location will open.
8.3.2
Selecting Chart Filters
It is important to know how to filter the charts in order to obtain information and select charts.
Click on the [Show Settings] quick access button in the "Chart Panel bar" and switch to the "Chart Catalogue" page by
clicking the tab.
In the "Filters" group the following options are available:


Chart Filter, which contains;
o Show all – to display all the charts from the selected catalogue folder;
o Show installed charts – to display charts from the ship's collection;
o Show selected – to display selected charts;
o Show not selected – to show all the unselected charts;
o Show coverage area – to display areas covered with SENC chart data (valid for ENC/SENC charts
only);
o Usage (Nav. Purpose)– to display charts with a certain navigational purpose such as:
Overview, General, Coastal, Approach, Harbour and Berthing.
Date Filter, which consists of;
o All (current collection) – to display all the charts in the collection;
o
o
8.3.3
Changes after – to display charts issued for the first time and charts whose new editions have
appeared, or which have been updated after the specified date;
Withdrawn after – to display the charts removed from the collection after the specified date.
Selecting Charts for Ordering
The first step in ordering specific charts, is to select the catalogue. To do this, select the desired catalogue from the
drop-down menu “Current catalogue” in the “Chart Catalogue” subtask. Loading the catalogue might take a short
while.
Once loaded, the whole chart catalogue can be expanded by clicking on the [+] button on the left-hand table.
To make a selection, click on [Select] in the “Chart Selection” group and choose one of the following options:




by region
by cursor
by point on a map
by route
Note: The charts displayed and the selection will depend on the filters chosen in the "Navi-Planner settings" window,
on the "Chart Catalogue" page.
8.3.4
Selecting Charts by Region
To select charts for a whole region, click on [Select] and then on the “by region” submenu.
The “Selection by region” window opens with a list of all regions.
Select the regions you want to order charts for by clicking on the respective check boxes.
You can select or deselect all regions via the [Select / Deselect all] button. Complete the selection by confirming with
the [Select] button.
All selected charts are listed in the right-hand table with their name, scale and status, and are also highlighted with
red borders in the chart area.
An overview of the selected charts is shown in the middle table.
8.3.5
Selecting Charts by Cursor
You can also select charts directly in the chart area using the cursor.
Click on [Select] and then on “by cursor”. The “Select area” cursor appears.
Left-click into the chart area to place the first point of the area and then move the cursor to change the size of the
box. A second click selects all charts in the box.
All selected charts will be highlighted and listed in the tables.
8.3.6
Selecting Charts by Point on Map
To select charts at a specific position, press the [Select] button and choose “by point on map”.
The cursor changes to a small selection box.
Click on the required point and a pop-up menu appears containing all charts that cover this point.
Select the charts you want to order by clicking on their check boxes. The selected charts will be highlighted in red.
Finish the selection with a double right click.
8.3.7
Selecting Charts by Route
Navi-Planner allows you to select all charts along a route.
Click on [Select] and move the mouse on “by route”. A submenu of all saved routes appears.
Click on the name of a route and all charts along this route will be automatically selected.
As before they are all listed in the tables and marked in the chart area.
Note: The charts along the route are selected according to the corridor selected in the "Navi-Planner settings
window", on the "Chart Catalogue" page
8.3.8
Customising the Selection
If a large amount of charts have been selected, the list can be customized before placing the order by removing those
that are not necessary.
Right-click on a chart in the right-hand table and click [Remove from basket] to remove the chart from the list of
selected charts.
Note: Chart filtering as described in the previous instruction "Selecting Chart Filters" will not affect the selected
charts in the basket. However, the use of the "Deselect" button in the "Chart Selection" group will affect the basket.
8.3.9
Checking Chart Coverage
To ensure that your whole route is covered, open the “Settings” window and the “Chart Catalogue” tab. Click on the
[Show coverage area] to mark the areas that are covered by chart data within ENC cells.
Manually check if all areas around your route are covered. If necessary you can select additional charts, e.g. with the
“by point on map” selection function.
The order list can also be exported via the [Save as...] button.
8.3.10
Ordering SENCs
To order the licences for the selected charts, click on the [License] button.
Select the length of the licensing period using the corresponding radio buttons.
You can also order the up-to-date charts and licences together, but chart files are a lot bigger and need a stable
internet connection to be transferred.
Press [Next >>] and the Navi-Planner will automatically optimise your order by removing charts that are already
available. If the licence will expire in the next 30 days, the selected charts will remain. The result will be listed after
the process is completed. Confirm with the [Next >>] button.
The price information for your order will be displayed by default in US dollar.
Continue with [Next >>].
As with the catalogue ordering you can choose to save your request to the hard disk and send it by e-mail later on or
send it directly to the chart order server. End your ordering process with the [Finish] button.
8.3.11
Ordering ENCs and RNCs
Electronic Navigational Charts (ENCs) and Raster Navigational Charts (RNCs) can be ordered via external programs
provided by other chart suppliers. The installation and updating of these charts will be explained in detail in "Units
7.3 ENC Installation and Updating and 7.4 RNC Installation and Updating".
8.3.12
Data Set
If there is no available "Base DVD" or new chart editions have been issued since the last "Base DVD" was received,
the latest chart edition - including updates from "Transas ChartServer" - can be requested via "Data Set".
To order a data set, click the [Order] tab and load the appropriate chart catalogue.
Select the required charts and optimise the selection as described in the previous instructions.
Click on [Data Set] and the loaded catalogue "TADS" will automatically be active.
Then click [Next>>]. If the ECDIS has direct internet connection to the chart server choose the [Send request] radio
button. Otherwise, select the [Save to Disk] radio button and enter the e-mail address to which the ordered file
should be sent and click [Finish]. Specify the path to the folder on the memory stick, in which the order should be
saved and click [OK]. Follow the instructions in the pop-up confirmation window.
Note: As the Dataset will include the chart data, it will induce a higher amount of internet traffic.
8.3.13
Orders History
Previously completed orders will be listed in the "Orders History" table with the following information:








Request - for ordered items
Issue Date - date ordered
Complete Date - date received
Status - status of the order
Chart Server Message - important message from the chart server
Chart category - categories of the order
Number - units ordered
Charts - name of charts ordered

8.4.1
SENC Installation and Updating
Installing SENC Licenses
If the Navi-Planner is not connected to the "Transas Chart Server" the licences can be ordered and received via email. The licences need to be transferred to the ECDIS station, e.g. via a USB flash drive.
To install licences, click on [Browse] on the "Install" tab and specify the path to the folder in which licences are stored
then click [Go]. The "Navi-Planner" will then start to scan the selected source and once completed, the "Source scan
completed" window will appear. Select the data to be installed and click the [Install selected items] button. NaviPlanner will then display a report detailing the installation operation.
8.4.2
SENC Installation
SENCs can be installed using either the “DVD Drive” or the “Browse” button from the “Scan” group.
Specify the path to the folder in which SENCs are stored and click the [Go] button. Select the [Install selected items]
to install all SENCs.
To install only a selection click on [Show charts list only] to display the charts first. Then select the required charts by
clicking the relevant check boxes followed by the [Install] button in the "Chart Selection" group.
The report detailing the result of the installation will appear.
Note: During the determination of importable charts from media, the system checks for a valid SA certificate. The
installation of this certificate will be explained in "Topic 7.3.1 Installation of ENCs".
8.4.3
Ordering SENC Updates
SENCs are ordered directly from the ECDIS manufacturer and can therefore be done directly in the Navi-Planner.
Select the [Order] tab and click on [Updates].
You can order updates for all installed charts or for a preselected choice (see 7.1.4 “Chart Supply” for details on how
to select charts beforehand). Click on the corresponding radio button to choose an option.
If you want to order a weekly update only, click on the radio button [Send once], for regular weekly updates click on
[Send weekly].
Continue with the [Next >>] button. Enter your ships e-mail address in the “Email” text box and use [Save to Disk] to
send the request by e-mail. Alternatively, if your station is connected to the internet, click on the [Send request] radio
button and the request will be sent out directly.
Complete the process by clicking on the [Finish] button.
8.4.4
Install SENC Updates
Updates can be installed in the same way as new charts.
Scan your DVD using the [DVD Drive] button or select the folder with the [Browse] button and click [Go].
If there are updates available, the “Updates” button will be displayed in the “Source scan completed” window. Make
sure they are active and click on [Install selected items] to install all updates.
To install only a selection of updates, press the [Show charts list only] button and select the desired charts manually
by clicking the check boxes. Then select the [Install] button in the "Chart Selection" group to start installing the
updates.
The Navi-Planner will then display a report detailing the installation operation.
8.4.5
Request a Full Licence
Every 3 months, a new base edition is released. All chart licences are bound to the current base edition and need to
be renewed before the new edition is installed.
Therefore the chart licences have to be renewed after each new base edition. It is not necessary to buy a new
licence, only to renew the existing one.
Select the [Order] tab and press the [Full License] button.
Either save the request and send it by e-mail or send it out directly, in the same way as other orders.
The new full licence can be installed in the same way as other licences.
8.5
ENC Installation and Updating
8.5.1
Certificates or User Permits
The user permit is required to order official ENC charts from an external chart supplier.
To view the user permit, click on the [T] Transas button and move the mouse to the “About” field.
The right-hand side displays product licence information, including the 28 character S-63 ENC user permit.
8.5.2
Installing Chart Permits from File
To install cell permits, click on the [T] Transas button and select "S57/SENC" from the drop-down menu.
Alternatively, select the "Install" tab and click on the [ENC Permits] button in the License group.
To install the permits from an external carrier, click the [Install from file] radio button then click the [Browse] button.
Specify the respective directory and click on [OK].
Click on [Install permits] button to trigger the installation process. A pop-up window "Navi-Planner Report" will be
displayed that summarises the installation process.
8.5.3
Installing Chart Permits Manually
To install the permits manually, click on the [T] Transas button and select "S57/SENC" from the drop-down menu.
Click on the [Manual permits entry] radio button and enter the number of the permit corresponding to the dongle.
Then click on [Install permits] button to trigger the installation process.
A pop-up window "Navi-Planner Report" will be displayed that summarises the installation process.
8.5.4
Installing ENCs
The process of installing ENC charts is similar to the process described in "Topic 7.2.1 Installation of SENCs". Ensure
that the data from the DVD or in the memory switch received by e-mail is available.
On the "Install" page, click on [DVD Drive] to scan the drive for available data.
Alternatively, click the [Browse] button in the scan group and select the folder which contains the ENC charts and
click [Go].
After the scanning process, the "Source scan completed" window will open.
Select the data to be installed and click [Install selected items]. If only a selection of charts is required, click on [Show
charts list only] to display the list of charts first. Then select the required charts by clicking on their check boxes and
install by clicking on the [Install] button in the "Chart Selection" group.
The report will appear detailing which actions have been completed.
8.5.5
Installing SA Certificate
During the determination of importable charts from media, the system checks for a valid SA certificate which for
official charts is the "IHO.CRT" file.
To install a new certificate, click on the [Install] tab, then select [ENC Permits] and click [Install new SA certificate].
Choose the data path where the ".crt" file is stored and click [Open]. A pop-up window will appear which contains
the "Issuer", "Validity", and "Public key" of the certificate, click on [OK] to proceed with the installation. If the
installation was successful, a confirmation window will appear, click [OK] and a report will be displayed. It is also
possible to install the SA certificate using the "Browse" button.
Note: The installed "SA certificate" can be viewed by clicking the [View installed SA certificate] button.
8.5.6
Installation of Updates
Updates can be installed in the same way as new charts.
Scan your DVD by clicking the [DVD Drive] button or specify the path to the folder using the [Browse] button.
If there are updates available, the "Updates" button will be displayed in the “Source scan completed” window. Make
sure they are active and click on [Install selected items] to install all updates.
To install only a selection of updates, press the [Show charts list only] button and select the desired charts manually.
8.6
8.6.1
RNC Installation and Updating TNS
ARCS User Permit
Similar to ENCs, raster charts need a user permit for each ECDIS.
The Navi-Planner can display the user permit for the Admiralty Raster Chart Service.
To view the user permit click on the [T] Transas button and move the mouse to the “About” field.
The right-hand side displays the product licence information, which contains the ARCS user permit.
8.6.2
Installing Raster Chart Permits
Raster Chart Permits can be installed within the “Charts” task on the "Install" tab.
Press the [ENC Permits] button to open the installation window.
You can either install licences from a file using the [Browse] button or enter them manually by activating the [Manual
permits entry] radio button.
To install the permits confirm by clicking the [Install permits] button.
A report will be generated to summarise the permit installation.
8.6.3
Installation of RNCs
Similar to ENCs, Raster Navigation Charts can be installed either from a DVD or a hard disk.
To install them from the DVD, select [DVD Drive] from the “Scan” group to scan for charts and updates.
To select a specific location on a hard disk or USB flash drive, click [Browse] and specify the path to the folder, which
contains the RNCs.
After scanning, the “Source scan completed” window appears listing the content that can be installed.
Select the charts you want to install and press [Install selected items].
Depending on the amount of charts, the installation might take a while.
After installation a report file will open displaying a summary of the installation.
8.6.4
Installation of Specific RNCs
To preselect which RNCs should be installed, complete the source scan as before.
Then select the raster charts and click on “Show charts list only”.
A list of all available charts will be generated. Select the charts that should be installed by clicking on the check box.
To install the selected charts, press the [Install] button.
The charts will be installed and the usual report file will be displayed.
8.6.5
RNC Updates
Unlike ENCs, raster chart updates are done by installing a new version of the chart.
The installation process is therefore the same as explained in 7.2.1-03 “Installation of RNCs“
8.7
8.7.1
Add / Edit Manual Corrections
Displaying the Manual Corrections List
This instruction explains how to open or close the "Manual Corrections" list.
Before you can view the list, the function must first be activated by opening the [Tasks List] on the Tab panel and
checking [Man Corr]. The "Man Corr" tab appears and the function panel can be maximised or minimised by
activating or deactivating the [Options] button.
8.7.2
Display Options
This ECDIS offers a number of "Display Options" that relate to the display of objects in the chart area.
Maximise the table by clicking the [Options] button, if not already shown. Click on the [Show/hide maps] button to
turn the display of the objects on and off.
The following buttons can be accessed in the “Display options” group:




Attachments: turns on the highlighting of objects with attached files;
Colored: turns on the colour of added objects from orange to coloured;
Timed objects: turns on the display of temporary objects
Deleted: turns on the highlighting of deleted objects;

New Objects
You can choose from the 3 object categories and 2 annotation categories in the drop-down list by clicking the [Add
objects] button.
The following categories are available;





Symbol: a list of standard chart symbols;
Line: a selection panel for line style and colour;
Text: the editor to add descriptions;
Depth: the editor to add the required depth value; and
Shapes: a selection panel for the fill style and colour of different shapes.
Note: The selected category will be displayed as the button name. Click on "arrow down" [▼] button to select the
other categories from the drop-down list.
8.7.4
Add New Correction
To add a manual correction, click on the [Add objects] button and select a category from the drop-down list e.g.
"Symbol", then choose the desired chart symbol, add any text or depth and choose a colour. You can also add a time
limit to an object by clicking the [Start] and [End] radio buttons, and changing the value in the input field by clicking
and moving the cursor.
Right click and select [Apply]. If necessary, click on the [Danger] radio button and enable [Clear attribute fields for
every new object].
Click on [Add object] button and move the cursor to the required position on the chart and click to insert the object.
Alternatively, press [Tab] to add an object by position. Right click to end the process.
Note: Point type objects cannot be displayed on scales smaller than 1:600,000.
8.7.5
Editing and Saving
The other 2 buttons at the top of the "Function Table" are for a number of peripheral activities:

[Edit objects] button - click to display the various editing functions such as:
o Edit: change an object
o Shift: move an object
o Delete: remove an object
o Restore: restore a deleted object
o Attach: attach a text file or picture to an object
To use a feature, select the [Edit] function and an acquisition marker appears on the chart; move the cursor to the
required object and click to open the "Edit window".
Modify the selected object and click [Apply].
If an object requires moving, click on "arrow down" [▼] button beside the active function and select [Shift]. Then
click on the object, move the cursor to the required position and click again to drop the object in its new position.

[Save] button - saves the changes to the chart.

8.8.1
Delete Manual Corrections
Delete
To delete a manual correction, click [Edit objects] and then [Delete].
Select the object on the chart and left-click on it.
The object has now been deleted. It is still listed but marked in the table with an "X" for a maximum period of 3
months.
8.8.2
Restore
To restore a deleted manual correction, first display all deleted objects by activating the "Deleted" button in the
"Display options" group.
If there is an active function, click on "arrow down" [▼] button and select "Restore" from the drop-down menu. Now
click on the object to be restored and the marking "X" from the table will disappear.

Manual Update History
The Corrections List
The corrections list displays the following information about each object:


Type – the type of object
! – objects marked as danger






Text – the text added to the object
Info – information associated with the object
Depth – the depth value
X – objects marked as deleted
Start time (UTC) and Stop time (UTC) – for timed objects
Modified time (UTC) – date and time of modification
The position of a selected object is displayed in the "Points" table.
To go to an object on the chart, double click on the relevant item in the list.
9 Backup Arregements and Data Management
If the ECDIS is used as the primary means for navigation, certain backup arrangements must be established in order
to ensure a safe takeover in case of an ECDIS malfunction.
9.1
9.1.1
Vessel-specific Backup Arrangements
Check Backup Arrangements
An adequate backup arrangement is essential to provide continuity in the event of failure or malfunction of the main
ECDIS. There are two ways to realize such a backup in practice:
The first is a second independent IMO compliant ECDIS. It must be guaranteed that a safe and seamless transfer of
the navigation from one station to the other is possible.
The other option is to carry a full folio of paper charts covering the area of the intended voyage. Those charts must
be maintained and updated in the usual manner.
You should check which backup arrangements are present on your ship in order to plan backups of important data.
9.2
9.2.1
Synchronising of ECDIS Stations
Data Synchronization
Within the network configuration, collections required for operation of different "Work Station" (WS) are
synchronized by software facilities. The following will be identical on all the WS’s:




Charts;
Maps and Manual correction;
Routes;
Alert management
9.2.2
Chart Collection Synchronization
The chart collection is installed with the aid of the Navi-Planner 4000 application on one WS. It is then synchronised
with the other WS automatically. In case of a network breakdown, each station will operate in Standalone mode,
meaning all chart handling operations (installation of licenses, charts, updates, etc.) must be performed on each WS
individually.
9.2.3
Maps Synchronization
The collection of maps is synchronised automatically as they are handled on all the WS’s (installed, edited and
deleted). In case of a network breakdown, operations on the maps should be performed on each WS separately.
9.2.4
Route Synchronization
Routes are synchronised on all workstations throughout the network.
This includes routes saved on ECDIS in the network, routes created in the Navi-Planner and routes which are supplied
to the ECDIS from external devices and connected to one workstation. If the network is not functioning, only the
workstation which is directly connected to the external route source device will retain the capability to receive the
routes.
9.3
9.3.1
Data management - Import / Export / Printing of Files
Data Tool Utility
Click the [Transas Integrator] from the ECDIS task and select [Data Tool].
The "Data Tool" utility window allows the following operations:
To copy or move the ECDIS data into an external carrier and the other way around,
To delete data from the ECDIS program, to view and print out archive data.
9.3.2
Exporting Data
To copy data into an external carrier, select the file which should be copied from the "Internal" list. In the "External"
group, specify the external device where the copied data should be stored. Click the "Copy" button in the utility main
menu. The file name and information about the file will be displayed in the right-hand window.
9.3.3
Importing Data
To copy data from an external device, select the required file group from the "Internal" list. In the "External" group,
specify the external device or folder with files to be copied. In the right-hand window, select the file and click the
"Copy" button. The file name and information about the file will be displayed in the left-hand window. The copying is
complete.
9.3.4
Converting Data File
To convert the system log data file, select "Track" from the "Features" list.
In the "Internal" list, select the "Log book to text" file group and click the file which should be converted. Click the
[Convert] button in the utility main menu. The "Log Book Converter" window will open up. Click the check boxes in
"Filters" group to display the required groups of events.
In the "Time" group, set the time interval for converting the log data. Click [OK] to confirm the settings. The
converted file will be added to the general file list with the same name plus extension: *.txt. The converting process
is complete.
9.3.5
Converting Track Files to Text Files
In the "Features" list select the "Track" feature. In the "Internal" list, select "Track to txt" file group. Select the file to
be converted.
Click the "Convert" button in the utility main menu. The converted file will be added to the general list of files with
the same name and extension: *.txt. Select this file and click "View" button to view the content of the file.
9.3.6
Converting Route File to Text Files
In the "Features" list select the "Route" feature. In the "Internal" list, select the "Route to text" file group. Select the
file to be converted and click the [Convert] button in the utility main menu. The converted file will be added to the
general list of files with the same name plus extension: *.cvt.
9.3.7
Printing Via Data Tool Utility
In the "Internal" or "External" group, of the "Data Tool" utility select the file which requires printing.
Some files can be viewed using the "View" button in the main menu which will open up the file contents.
Click the "Print" toolbar button to print the file.
9.3.8
System Log Printout
Open [Logbook] panel from the [Tasks List] menu and select [System Log].
To print out the electronic system logbook, click the [Print] button in the "Settings" group.
Use the "From" and "To" input boxes to set the time interval for the printout of the electronic system logbook events,
then click the [Print] button.

Screenshots
Graphic Screen Copy
An instant recording of the screen graphic display is achieved using the plus < P > hotkey combination.
The screen graphic copies are stored in the "Screenshot" feature in the "Data Tool" utility of the Transas Integrator.
The file can be exported for subsequent use with the aid of the Data Tool utility.
9.5
9.5.1
Short Term Voyage Recording
System Log
The "System Log" is a file where both, navigational and system events are automatically recorded. This is the
mandatory electronic system logbook for an ECDIS according to the IMO requirements.
To access the system log, click on the [Tasks List] menu, select [Log Book] and switch to [System Log] page. It should
be noted that it is not possible to change any given data. However, the operator can manually add data to the
following fields:
Water temperature, Remarks, Wave direction, Wave Height, Air temperature, Pressure, Visibility and Engine RPM
with the use of a password. Voice comment can also be added provided that a microphone is connected to the
network, by keeping the [Event] button pressed.
The system log file is created every 24 hours (with the change of date by UTC time). Select the required date from the
"Settings" group. The current date is set as default. To change the content of the system log, click the [Fields] button
and uncheck the checkboxes of any unnecessary event parameters. To display other groups of events, click the
[Filter] button and check the checkboxes of the necessary parameter groups. To set the total covered distance to
zero, click the [Reset Distance.] button.
9.5.2
Past Track
Own ship track parameters are recorded automatically by the system.
A track displayed in real time is created from the file data for the selected date and contains the following elements:




Track colour - the set colour will be used for the display of track segment created after the colour has been
assigned via the "Track Color" function. The colour of the segment is determined prior to the voyage and
remains unchanged.
Track plot interval - is the distance of the track points from each other. The track may be displayed with a plot
interval of zero, 10 seconds or 1 minute at the user's choice.
Time label – to display time labels according to the user's settings.
Displayed track length - the ship's track will be displayed with time tags corresponding to the events entered
in the ship logbook in the specified period of time. A period from 1hour to 24hours can be set via the "Own
ship track" function. If zero is set, the display of the track and time tags will be stopped.
The "Show primary track" radio button is activated by default. "Show time-labels" and "Show secondary
track/position" can also be activated or deactivated depending on the operators need. To display the entire own ship
track for the selected date, click the [Focus on Track] button on the Chart panel.
9.6
9.6.1
Long Term Voyage Recording
System Archive
The archived system parameters are saved on the computer hard disk and can be available for viewing through ECDIS
task, Play Back or Data Tool utilities which were mentioned earlier in this module. The data is saved locally on each
workstation and is not synchronised. The hard drive memory size for the storage of the system archive is suitable for
a minimum of 3 months as per the IMO requirement. If it is necessary to increase the storage period, it can be
changed by a service engineer.
To prevent overfilling of the hard disk, the system has a capability to set the archive data storage time in days,
allowing old data to be deleted and new information to be recorded in its place.
9.7
9.7.1
Playback
Playback Utility
Click the [Transas Integrator] and select the [Play Back] utility button.
After the utility has run, the screen will display a control window. The "Play Back" window is intended for the
selection of the date and time of the situation that should be played back, and for the control of playback.
Click [Track date] and select the required date from the drop down list.
The Chart panel will display the tracks of the own ship and targets on the selected date. Use the [Time] input line to
enter the value of the time, which the dynamic display is required to start from and click the [Enter] key.
9.7.2
Playback Window
Click [Time step] and select the situation playback scale relative to real time.
Click the playback start button, and the “Replay” message will appear in the "Mode" line in the top right corner of
the panel. On the chart panel the ship's motion will be played back at the set time scale.
Click the [Start by cursor] button to place the own ship symbol on the own ship's track, at the point where the
situation playback should be started. Set the ship symbol in the required track point using the mouse and click. The
playback of motion will start from the point where the ship symbol was set.
Click the Display Panel window, select "System Information", in order to view echo sounder, wind and water
temperature data. Select "Route Data" to view the monitored route data at the moment when the route was loaded.
Use the tab in the top part of the "Route Data" to switch the displayed data.
10 Navigational Tools and Other Related Information
The Navi-Sailor 4000 provides plenty of additional information and presents important data in a way that facilitates
effective use of the system.

Manoeuvring Displays - Conning Information
Via left side Panel / Instruments
When you press the [Show /Hide] button of Left Side Bar you find the current sensor data for Gyro, Rate of Turn,
true/relative Wind and Depth on the ”Instruments” tab.

Via Navigator Panel of Multi Display Panel
If you select the [Navigator Panel] in the "Display Panel" window of the “Control” panel, a list with the following
selectable data is available:













HDG – Heading
STW - Speed through Water
COG - Course over Ground
SOG - Speed over Ground
ROT - Rate of Turn
XTD - Cross Track Distance
BWOL - Bearing to the next waypoint's Wheel over Line
BWW - Bearing from the previous to the next Waypoint
DWOL - Distance to WOL
ETA (UTC) - Estimated Time of Arrival
TTG - Time to Go to the next waypoint with current SOG
RAD - Turn Radius at the next Waypoint
TURN RAD. - Calculated Radius of Turn
10.1.3
Docking Mode via Multi Panel
In the "Multi Panel", select "Precision Instruments" and open the "DM" page to display the actual "Rate of Turn",
"Radius of Turn" and ship’s tendency.
Activate the display of "COG" and "Speed" vectors by selecting their respective buttons.
10.1.4
Docking Mode via Dual Tab
To call up the "Docking Mode", switch from the "Main" to the "Dual" panel on the "Tab Area" and then select the
"DM" button on the "Chart Panel bar".
When you activate the "Docking Mode" via the "Dual" tab, the mode will be displayed at the top of the chart. The
initial scale will be zoomed as set in the "General" page on "Config" panel.
Your ship will be centred on the screen and the "Precision Instruments" menu in the "Control Panel" including the
"Reference Points" page will open.
10.1.5
Docking Mode, Reference Points
On the “Reference Points” page you can set and save bearings and distances for frequently used berths, mooring
points or bollards.
10.2
10.2.1
Parallel Indexing
Parallel Index Lines
To set parallel index lines, select "Parallel Index Lines" from the multi display window.
Up to two lines can be displayed. Enter the direction of the line in the true bearing field and the distance from the
vessel in the range field.
To activate or deactivate the display of the "Parallel Index Lines" click on the number of the corresponding line. By
clicking the button [Reset], the parallel index lines will align according to the ship´s heading.
10.2.2
User Objects
Parallel indexes can be created as user objects using the "Line" category in the "Maps" task.
This is explained in Topic 3.3.1 "Create User Map Objects".

10.3.1
Trial Manoeuvres
Trial Manoeuvre
If necessary you can start "Trial Manoeuvring" as known from a radar by selecting the ”TRIAL/TGT Simulator“ panel
from the dropdown list of the "Multi Display Panel" window. It is separated in “Trial Manoeuvre” and “TGT
Simulator”.
10.3.2
Trial Manoeuvre, EML Value
To perform a "Trial Manoeuvre" enter the following values of intended manoeuvre:
“Trial line”, “Delay”, “Radius”, “Set CTW” and “Set SPD”.
Then the expected motion line (EML) will be displayed by pressing [Show].
10.3.3
Trial Manoeuvre, Invalid Parameter
If the parameters entered do not allow the turn with the set radius and delay time to be inscribed in the set "EML"
length, an appropriate warning will be generated.
The values turn to orange and the "EML" will not be displayed on the chart area anymore.
10.3.4
Trial Manoeuvre, "Drop" Function
To accept the manoeuvre, press the [Drop] button.
The selected parameters will be recorded and the countdown of the selected time before the manoeuvre starts will
begin.
A second press on the [Drop] button cancels the recording of parameters.
10.3.5
Trial Manoeuvre, TGT Warning
If in the course of a trial manoeuvre when approaching a certain target, the "CPA" value assumes a value smaller
than those set in the “Targets” panel, the corresponding segments of Ownship and target motion line will turn red.
10.3.6
Trial Manoeuvre vs. Predicted Vectors
The difference between predicted vectors and trial manoeuvre is, that on the trial manoeuvre your ship parameters
have no effect on the displayed vectors.
10.3.7
TGT Simulator
You can add, edit and cancel simulated training targets or cancel all of them via the “TGT Simulator” function.

10.4.1
Anchoring Display
Anchoring Options
Setting a safe anchorage can be done in the "Route Planning" panel as explained in "Topic 5.1.5 Additional Features".
It is also possible to do this in the "Monitoring" panel by clicking the [Navigational Alerts] tab to access the "Anchor
watch settings" window.
10.4.2
Anchor Watch Settings
There are two anchor watch rings available which can be displayed at the same time.
Click on the cells under "Safety ring" and enter the required radius in metres. They can be linked with an alarm via
the corresponding checkbox.
Activate the [Down] button to display the anchor symbol at the ship's position. This prompts the "Chart Objects"
window in the "Control Panel"; showing safety information within the area. Enable the [Show anchor watch rings]
button to view the "Safety Ring".
To move the centre of the ring, select the [by Cursor] button and click on the required chart position.
10.4.3
Safety Swing Circle
This window is intended for setting a safety swing circle using these parameters:


Vessel Length - specified in the System Configuration utility;
Cable Length - anchoring cable length (in "Metres" or in "Shackles"), cannot be lower than the depth value;



Depth - estimated depth value in the anchoring position;
Safety Margin - additional range to ensure safe anchorage;
Swing Radius - radius of the "outer" circle, which is calculated.
Note: The button "Calculate" is use for entering new parameters while "Use from route" should be selected if
parameters used in the route planning stage shall be used.
10.4.4
Deactivate Anchor Watch
To deactivate the "Anchor Watch", click on active [Down] button and the anchor symbol will disappear.

Presentation of AIS Data
Activate AIS Target Display
There are 3 ways to activate the display of AIS target information:



Press the [Target] key on the ES6 keyboard
Press the [AIS] button in the Control panel
Open the [Targets] task and check the [AIS] box
10.5.2
Target Table
In the "Targets" task, the "Target Table" tab shows all AIS and ARPA targets according to the selection. These targets
can be sorted by:










Name - name of the target
Alias - created name for a target
CPA - targets Closest Point of Approach
TCPA - targets Time of Closest Point of Approach
SOG - Speed Over Ground of the target
COG - Course Over Ground of the target
Range - distance of the target
Bearing - bearing of the target
Bow X - Bow Crossing Distance of the target
TBow X - Bow Crossing Time of the target
Settings can also be done for "Max. range, CPA, and TCPA". The "AIS Target identification" can be shown as "By ID, By
Name, By Call Sign, By MMSI number or None".
10.5.3
Own Ship AIS Data
The AIS data for the own ship can be set in the "AIS" task.
The "Voyage and Static Data" tab allows you to set up the information that your own AIS sends to other vessels.
10.5.4
AIS Message via Control Panel
Upon receipt of messages from AIS objects a notification will appear.
When received messages have been accepted by the operator, they will be shown on the "AIS Messages" display of
the "Control panel".
Click the left or right button at the bottom of the display to toggle between the received messages.
10.5.5
AIS Messaging
AIS messaging can also be accessed through the "AIS" task.
The "Messaging" tab allows you to create own AIS messages and display received messages from other vessels or
stations.
The "IMO special messages" tab and the "Safety messages DB" display official safety and information messages.
10.5.6
AIS Color Tracks
The "AIS color tracks" tab of the "Targets" task allows you to add an individually coloured track to every target
obtained.
Select from the following options:





Date – target’s track on certain date
Display by - MMSI, Ship name or Call Sign
Time stamp - interval of plotted track
Unload all - to remove the target’s track
Show on chart - to display the selected target’s track
When a target is lost, the track will be displayed as an interrupted line.

Presentation of ARPA Data
Activate ARPA Target Display
Similar to the display of AIS data, there are 3 ways to display ARPA data:



Press the [Target] key on the ES6 keyboard and all ARPA sources will be activated
Press the [ARPA] button in the Control panel and select at least one ARPA source
Open the [Targets] task and check the [ARPA-A] and/or the [ARPA-B] box
10.6.2
Target Information
To obtain information about a target, position the free "View cursor" on the required target; the cursor will change
form. Click on the target and the target data card with its parameters will be displayed next to the target.
Note: This also applies to AIS targets.
10.6.3
Target Table
Like AIS targets, ARPA targets are listed in the "Target table".
Open the "Targets" task to access the list of targets.

Radar Overlay
Activate Radar Overlay
To activate the radar overlay, select a scanner from the control panel.
Press "Overlay" to display the data from the selected scanner.

AIO
Installation
The Admiralty Information Overlay chart is installed via Navi-Planner together with the latest Base DVD and is
updated weekly.
Click the [DVD Drive] button or the [Browse] button and select the "AIO" folder then click [Go].
If there are AIO charts and updates available, the "Updates" radio buttons will become active in the “Source scan
completed” window.
Click on [Install selected items] to install all of them.

Overlay
To activate the AIO, open the "Overlays" task.
Select the "AIO Charts" tab and press [Show AIO].
The AIO contains all admiralty Temporary & Preliminary Notices to Mariners (T&P ums) in force worldwide.

10.9.1
Chart Datum Settings
Chart Datum
The Navi-Sailor always uses the WGS 84 chart datum.
This is displayed in the information window of the control panel.
10.9.2
Different Chart Datum
If, for some reason, the given position is not in the same chart datum, it will be necessary to enter a position offset in
order to display the vessel at the correct location.
Details regarding position offset are given in topic 3.4.1.
