Fall 2023 Academic Success Common Hour: Developing Metacognitive Skills Assignment What is metacognition? Metacognition is thinking about your own thinking and refers to the ability to reflect upon, understand, manipulate, and regulate your thinking during learning. Thoughtful learners plan, monitor progress, adjust strategies as needed, and evaluate learning. What is the Assignment Activity? In order to complete this assignment, you must select an assignment from another course or for the academic portion of your Chicago Quarter course. This assignment will require you to think about your selected assignment and by doing so will assist you with developing your own metacognitive skills and with becoming a thoughtful learner. Directions: Write a typed 2-page, doublespaced paper that responds to all of the questions within each of the steps. STEP ONE: Assignment Selection Select an assignment from another course or from the academic portion of your Chicago Quarter course. This could be a paper, a group project, a research paper, a quiz/test, etc. A D2L post would not be a sufficient assignment for this activity. Use your work towards and completion of the selected assignment to inform this activity. STEP TWO: Plan for the Assignment 1. What is the instructor’s goal in having me do this assignment? 2. When is the assignment due? 3. How much time do I need to complete the assignment? What is my timeline for getting the assignment done? 4. What are all the things I need to do to successfully accomplish this assignment? 5. What skills (research, technology, writing, public speaking) are required of me to complete the assignment? 6. If I have done something like this before, how could I use that experience to help me? 7. What resources do I need to complete the assignment? How will I access and utilize these resources? STEP THREE: Monitor Your Progress 1. What strategies am I using that are working well or not working well to help me learn? 2. What other resources could I be using to complete this assignment? What action should I take to get these? 3. What is most challenging for me about this task? What is most confusing? 4. What could I do differently mid-assignment to address these challenges and confusion? STEP FOUR: Self-Evaluation 1. To what extent did I successfully accomplish the goals of the task? 2. To what extent did I use resources available to me? 3. If I were the instructor, what would I identify as strengths of my work and flaws in my work? 4. When I do an assignment or task like this again, what do I want to remember to do differently? What worked well for me that I should use next time?
