ESSAY
Do you think that Arnis is the national sports of the Philippines? Why or Why not? (10pts.)
National sport? Arnis is a stick fighting, using both two sticks, or both stick and a dagger, in
each hands. I believed the origin of this fighting style comes from Cebu, when Lapulapu
used it to defeat Magellan. Doce Pares, headed by the late Filemon Canete, was established
in 1932 at C. Padilla Street, Cebu City. Doce Pares propagated this style of Filipino stick
fighting which also included the use of spears, chains (cadena), knife throwing and lately
combining it with Japanese karate. I was lucky to have known Filemon and his other
seasoned instructors when I started learning this type of Filipino stick fighting. It started to
become a yearly local martial arts competition using this technique by different Arnis clubs
all around Cebu and later expanded to national and international levels. National sport?
