UNDERESTIMATE
Through the years, students’ homework has become a major factor in students continuous learning.
Passing of law that hinders students to understand the importance of learning may add up to the
aggravating concerns on students’ perception of quality education. Thus, Senator Bong Revilla’s ‘No
Homework Act of 2023’ neglects the benefits of giving assignments to students.
Senator Ramon ‘Bong’ Revilla Jr. filed on January 30, 2023, an act establishing a no-homework policy for
all elementary and junior high schools in the country. The bill mandates that homework shall be
prohibited on weekends and shall be minimal and doable for only two hours on weekdays. According to
its explanatory note, Revilla (2023) explains that assignments increase student’s anxiety which is one of
the effects of students’ low motivation in school. Furthermore, lessening this kind of activity promotes
parent-child time and engages students to co-curricular activities (Revilla, 2023). However, the bill
forgets the advantage of a well-designed assignment as assessment for students’ higher cognitive
abilities or preparation tool for students’ readiness in the next lesson which usually happens every
Monday (Vlas, et.al, n.d.). Contrary to what has been explained above, assignments can produce higher
academic achievement specially when families are involved. Weber (2021) suggests that when families
are engaged in homework, students develop a love for learning and realize that learning expands even
outside schools. In the real world, assignments have become pro-students as it allows them to continue
tasks that cannot be finished at school and it gives students chance to explore learning outside the fourcorners of their classroom. (/)
It is indeed true that assignments can be disadvantageous to students. However, a well-designed and
balanced home-activities could be more of a benefit to learners. Limiting the requirement of this kind
might offer more problems in the quality of education in the country.
