10 Ph.D. Assistantships at the University of Idaho
The project of Climate-Smart Commodities for Idaho will build climate-smart markets and
increase the adoption of climate-smart practices with a focus on barley, beef, chickpeas, hops,
potatoes, sugar beets, and wheat. The project will collaborate with public, private, and tribal
partners to 1) increase the adoption of climate-smart practices; 2) reduce greenhouse gas (GHG)
emissions; 3) assess the GHG-mitigating potential of major crops; 4) evaluate climate-smart
farming effects on yield, profitability, soil health, pest management, and supply chain
development; 5) refine the COMET model for implementation in Idaho; 6) improve accuracy of
GHG and soil C storage estimates for Idaho’s farming systems.
We will hire a cohort of 10 doctoral students who will work and study across the state of Idaho.
Students will work with faculty across the University of Idaho’s campuses and Research and
Extension Centers (Moscow, Idaho Falls, Aberdeen, Kimberly, and Parma). The students are fully
supported with a stipend, student health insurance, tuition, and a research allowance. There are
diverse options of research themes for students to study in this program: Agronomy (e.g., crop
rotations, crop yield and quality), Animal Grazing and Greenhouse Gas Flux, Crop Modeling (e.g.,
CropSyst, DSSAT, etc.), Entomology, Human Dimensions, Plant Pathology/Nematology, Project
Management, Nutrient Management, Remote Sensing/Drone Imagery, Soil Amendments (e.g.,
compost, biochar), Soil-Borne Plant Pathogens, Soil Carbon, Soil Greenhouse Gas Flux and
Modeling, Soil Health, Vector-Borne Plant Pathogens, Weed Ecology, etc.
