INDIAN CONSTITUTION UNCONSCIOUS RACISM : The psychology behind implicit racial bias and discrimination What is RACISM? Racism, also called racialism, is the belief that humans can be divided into separate and exclusive biological entities called “races"; that there is a causal link between inherited physical traits and traits of personality, intellect, morality, and other cultural and behavioral features; and that some races are innately superior to others. The term is also applied to political, economic, or legal institutions and systems that engage in or perpetuate discrimination on the basis of race or otherwise reinforce racial inequalities in wealth and income, education, health care, civil rights, and other areas. What is UNCONSCIOUS BIAS? • Unconscious (or implicit) bias is a term that describes the associations we hold, outside our conscious awareness and control. Unconscious bias affects everyone. • Unconscious bias is triggered by our brain automatically making quick judgments and assessments. They are influenced by our background, personal experiences, societal stereotypes and cultural context. It is not just about gender, ethnicity or other visible diversity characteristics - height, body weight, names, and many other things can also trigger unconscious bias. • Unconscious bias can have a significant influence on our attitudes and behaviours, especially towards other people. It can influence key decisions in the workplace and can contribute to inequality, for example in selection and recruitment, appraisals, or promotion. Unconscious Racism in India You can find some famous quotes behind trucks and autos in India ,like “buri najar wale tera muh kala” Which means that “Hey you! with evil eyes , your face is black.” Black colour is associated with evil and badness in stereotype minds. Fair colour is seen as the colour of superiority and dark colour is seen as the colour of sorrows and inferiority Quotes should be changed “Buri najar wale teri soch gandi” which means “Hey !you with evil eyes, your mentality is dirty”. RACISM IN HINDUISM Caste system, as an unchanging, oppressive, and hereditary social hierarchy that is religiously mandated by and for Hindus, is the product of European conceptions about Indians and Hinduism. Informed by 18th- and 19th- century beliefs in whiteEuropean and Christian superiority over “dark” races around the world and non-Christian religions, Europeans theorized that the whole of Indian society was organized as a four-fold caste system and a class of “untouchable” castes outside the main four. According to such theories, the system was created and enforced by a small and ostensibly oppressive Hindu priestly class of the false religions of India with seemingly little to no opposition from the masses for millenia. It remains the predominant way in which Indian and Hindu society are understood and portrayed globally, in spite of Europeans, over 200 years ago, witnessing ground realities that did not correspond to their conceptions. Defining racism in Advertising 1. Beauty whitewash is a term that is used in the advertising industry that refers to the harmful ideal that beauty can be defined by skin and hair colour. The term applies particularly to photographs where the skin and hair colour of the model is manipulated to be lighter. 2. India is one of the best markets in the world for selling skin fairness products. Actors and actresses with high popularity also endorse such products, which gives you the greed of fair colour gain. And unfortunately a very large number of population is patient of this social disease. 3. Nike digitally manipulated the skin colour of Jason Williams, a basketball player, from white to black for an advertising campaign. This received backlash for racially abusing Asian fans and Nike was fined. 4. A similar incident occurred with Ford Motor, where they darkened the face of a stunt driver in a TV advertisement. Ford was later forced to remove all new commercials featuring the modification. Ford stated that the alteration was made to make the driver less noticeable; however, they still received allegations of racism. RACISM in Old Times : Jesus/Santa potrayed to be white men The race and appearance of Jesus has been a topic of discussion since the days of early Christianity. Various theories about the race of Jesus have been proposed and debated. By the Middle Ages, a number of documents, generally of unknown or questionable origin, had been composed and were circulating with details of the appearance of Jesus. Now these documents are mostly considered forgeries. A wide range of depictions have appeared over the two millennia since Jesus's death, often influenced by cultural settings, political circumstances and theological contexts. The depiction of Jesus in art of the first Christian centuries gradually standardized his appearance with a short beard. By the nineteenth century, theories that Jesus was non-Semitic were being developed, with writers suggesting he was variously white, black, Indian, or some other race. However, as in other cases of the assignment of race to biblical individuals, these claims have been mostly based on cultural stereotypes, ethnocentrism, and societal trends rather than on scientific analysis or historical method . Black Lives Matter Incident(Gun Shot) On April 11, 2021, Daunte Wright, a 20-year-old Black man, was fatally shot by police officer Kimberly Potter during a traffic stop and attempted arrest for an outstanding arrest warrant in Brooklyn Center, Minnesota, United States. After a brief struggle with officers, Wright was shot once in the chest at close range. He then drove off a short distance, but his vehicle collided with another and hit a concrete barrier. Officers administered CPR to Wright, but were unable to revive him, and he was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities said that Potter meant to use her taser, but accidentally used her gun instead. Two days later, Potter and Brooklyn Center police chief Tim Gannon resigned from their positions, and Potter fled her home after her address was leaked on social media. Potter was convicted of firstdegree manslaughter and second-degree manslaughter on December 23, 2021, at a jury trial in Hennepin County. The shooting sparked protests in Brooklyn Center and renewed ongoing demonstrations against police brutality in the Minneapolis– Saint Paul metropolitan area, leading to citywide and regional curfews. Demonstrations also spread to cities across the United States. WHITE IS PORTRAYED AS GOOD There are “brighter days ahead” after “dark times.” We want to be whitelisted and not blacklisted for jobs. Black hats are the bad hackers and white hats the good ones. White lies make stretching the truth okay, while we don’t want to receive a black mark on our records. In picture books, good people, angels and Gods dress in white, but the villains, devils and the Grim Reaper dress in black. It has now become a socially accepted ideology that white is good and black is bad THANK YOU !! This Was The Contrasting And Broaden View On Racism Around Us.
