Essay: Answer the following questions comprehensively.
1. Select one nursing theory that best applies in your work area. Cite an example. (15 pts)
The nursing theory that best applies in my work area is the "Environmental theory" of Florence Nightingale. According to her, nursing being about environmental manipulation, nutrition and conservation of patient energy. She believed nursing to signify the proper use of fresh air, light, warmth, cleanliness, quiet and proper selection and administration of diet-all at the least expense of vital power to the patient. For clarfication, my job is to vaccinate patients which has been bitten by dogs or cats. It is either they go to our clinic or home service. And this theory best applies since we always make sure that our clinic is safe for them. They will not be able to encounter any source of infections and other things that could worsen their condition. Additionally, with accordance to the concept of diet, we make sure that their nutrition is also prioritized when vaccinated, we remind them what to take for a while and how they could help theirselves heal while in certain dietary intake. 2. Reflect on a case or situation from your personal practice or experience. Apply one of the theories to the situation. How does the perspective from the theory alter on how you view the situation? Are nursing interventions the same? Why or why not? (20 pts)
As one of the options that a patient could choose from our service is home service, I can apply the "Caritative caring theory" of Katie Eriksson. Sometimes, the patient's place is too far from our clinic so it is indeed a sacrifice, especially when that particular day is too toxic for us which exhaust us. The theory tells us that "the substance and core of caring is described as 'to care is to tend, play and learn in faith, hope and love'. The starting point is love, mercy, human kindness, compassion and a caring relationship". And it alters my view on that kind of situation, instead of looking at the negative side, I focus on the positive side. It is really for the sake of the patient's conditon, to show love and care in the midst of difficult time. Show up and fulfill your service wwith kindness and compassion. And I can say that nursing interventions are just the same from mine since it revolves around care for the patient from us who have the responsibility to show love unconditionally, so that we can also build a strong relationship that would help her condition. 3. Select five (5) nursing theory. Discuss the relevancy of different nursing theories to nurses working in different practice settings and roles (academe, hospital, etc.). Cite theoretical implications for nursing education, nursing practice, research and nursing administration. (50 pts)
A framework for comprehending and directing nursing practice is provided by nursing theories. Nurses working in a variety of practice settings and roles can be relevant to different nursing theories. These five nursing theories and their applicability to various nursing practice settings and roles are as follows:
- This theory places a strong emphasis on the role that environment plays in patient treatment. By providing cleanliness, appropriate lighting, and noise control in acute care settings like hospitals, nurses can employ this principle to create a healing environment. It may guide efforts to improve the general health of the community by addressing environmental variables like clean water and sanitation in public health or community health nursing.
- The relationship between nurses and patients and the value of caring are at the center of Watson's theory. Developing a therapeutic relationship with patients is essential in all nursing roles. This theory, for instance, might be used by nurses to give patients and their families compassionate care at trying times in hospice, oncology, or palliative care settings.
- The focus of Orem's theory is on a patient's capacity for self-care and the nurse's assistance when that capacity is weakened. This theory is extremely applicable in such professions since nurses frequently assist patients with chronic illnesses or disabilities manage their self-care needs in settings like home health care or long-term care facilities.
- According to Neuman's model, patients are open systems that respond to stressors. Nurses frequently work with patients experiencing various physiological and psychological pressures in emergency departments or critical care units. Applying this theory enables nurses to evaluate and treat patients holistically while taking into account how stressors may affect their overall health. - The importance of cultural competence in nursing care is emphasized by Leininger's theory. Nurses in every workplace must be culturally sensitive in a healthcare environment that is becoming more and more varied. This theory is particularly relevant to community health nursing since it can help varied populations' health outcomes to recognize and appreciate cultural differences.
For a variety of nursing practice settings and roles, numerous nursing theories provide useful frameworks. To provide patient-centered care, enhance outcomes, and address the particular needs of patients in various healthcare environments, nurses might modify and incorporate these beliefs into their practice.
4. Discuss the relationship of theory to education, research and practice. (15 pts)
In any field, including nursing, the interaction between theory, education, research, and practice is dynamic and intertwined. Following are some examples of how nursing theory affects and is influenced by education, research, and practice:
For the relationship of theory and education, The foundation of nursing education is the nursing theories. They provide a structure for disseminating and learning nursing concepts, tenets, and procedures. Students who possess theoretical knowledge are better able to comprehend the rationale for nursing interventions and patient care techniques. Nursing educators use nursing theories too to create curricula that aligns to the chosen theories' tenets and philosophies. By directing the structure and content of nursing programs, these curricula make sure that students are exposed to pertinent theoretical ideas. The nursing theory also promotes critical thinking in the educational setting. The application of theoretical information to practical situations is a challenge for students, encouraging the growth of clinical reasoning and problem-solving abilities.
For the relationship of theory and research, through the creation of hypotheses or questions, nursing theories frequently encourage study. Nursing ideas may be put to the test or expanded upon by researchers through empirical studies. For instance, a pain management theory may inspire study into the efficacy of various pain management strategies. Additionally, Findings from research can support or improve nursing theories. If a theory's predictions or guiding principles are regularly supported by research, it gains credibility and could be generally accepted in the nursing community. On the other hand, research may reveal flaws or gaps in a theory, leading to its improvement.
For the relationship of theory and practices, by providing a framework for comprehending patient requirements, organizing care, and making clinical decisions, nursing theories direct nursing practice. For instance, nurses' assessments and interventions with stressed patients may be influenced by a theory on stress management. Also, improved patient outcomes can result from the use of nursing theory in practice. Evidence-based practice frequently uses theories and research to guide actions and guarantee that patients get the best possible care.
Theory, education, research, and practice are interconnected components of nursing. Nursing theories serve as a foundation for practice and research in the field. When it comes to providing high-quality patient care, research applies theoretical knowledge while practice develops, validates, or creates new theories. This reciprocal interaction makes sure that nursing keeps advancing over time, benefiting patients and healthcare professionals alike.
