Michael Kenna
A world class English contemporary
landscape photographer known for his
unusual and mysterious black and white
compositions with high contrast and
glows (exposure) often taken 'at dawn or
in the dark hours of night'.
Michael Kenna is a 70 year old (Born in 1953)
landscape photographer from England and now
currently based in Seattle, Washington USA. He is
'one of the most acclaimed landscape photographers
of his generation'.
Famous for his photographic compositions and use of
light, "concentrating primarily on the interaction
between the natural landscape and human-made
structures." His use of light and manipulation of
exposure in his compositions are what separates his
photos
from
other
contemporary
landscape
photographer.
His works are inspired and widely compared to
the works of American photographer Ansel
Adams, another world class artist, as well as to
British photographer, Henry Fox Talbot.
According to an interview, he's influenced by
Japanese photographers, Hokusai and Hiroshige,
Kenna's works exhibit the sereneness and tranquility of
the natural world, natural phenomenon, human-made
structures, and atmosphere. Capturing it in a manner
that is so encapsulating, with his minimal compositions
that prioritizes to showcase relation of light and
shadows with the subject/scene. His techniques is to
have long exposures to capture the intense contrast of
lighting and design the luminance of the composition.
