Individual justice vs social justice
o Justice as individual rights as represented by the lady with the scales
 On the sale of a case
 Individual
 Assumes all are equal before the law
 Relies on legal systems
 Restitution for the individual
o Social justice as in social movements
 More ongoing
 Collective
 Begins from recognizing socially structured inequality
 Looks to multiple scales, institutions
 Aimed at social changed and structural change
o Individual justice assume a universal subject
o Our identities have the meanings and material effects that they do because of social and
historical system of meaning and power
o Inequality is structural, so justice must be too
Inclusion in what
o Consumer capitalism, debt
Performances of inclusion become alibis for inequality
o No structural changes
What about those who cant be capacitated into normalcy
Capacitation of some entails debility and slow death
Intersectionality
o The gendered history and legacy of slavery
o Black women positioned beyond the grammar of legitimate personhood (Spillers)
Black enfranchisement in white society based on becoming “normal”
o Centrality of hetero-patriarichy
o The patriarchy of black nationalism
Black women structurally undermined by SYSTEMS INTERSECT
o No space for black women
