Questions
Notes
What are chemical indicators?

Chemical indicators allow scientists to identify compounds in
materials.
How are chemical indicators used?

Chemical indicators
o Can be used to test products.
o Undergo a color change in the presence of certain
macromolecules.
What is a macromolecule?

A macromolecule is a large molecule, especially applied to
carbohydrates, proteins, lipids, and nucleic acids.
How is iodine used as a chemical
indicator?
How are sodium hydroxide and
copper sulfate used as chemical
indicators?
Examples of chemical indicators

Iodine
o Identifies starch (a complex carbohydrate).
o Color change: brownish to dark blue

Sodium hydroxide (NaOH) and copper sulfate (CuSO4)
o Identify protein.
o Color change: blue to purple
Summary
