Before the incident I was out sailing on my own. The
weather had been sunny, but after an hour or so, it turned
stormy and windy.
I noticed there was a hole in the boat and that water was
coming in. I tried to close the hole with a cloth which had
been dipped in oil, but it didn’t work. I started to feel a bit
desperate, but I was determined to survive.
The water kept rushing in and the weather got worse.
Suddenly there was a huge clap of thunder and lightning
hit the boat.
When I woke up, I was in an ambulance receiving medical
treatment. I only had a few bruises, so after the doctor
checked me, I went home. I was so happy everything turned
out fine.

My name’s Penny and I am fifteen years old. I live in
Brighton, a beautiful place on the south coast of England. I
live in Portly Street, which is very near the sea. My home is
on a quiet road in an old part of town. My city is very exciting
and fun, there is always something going on.
There are five people in my family; my parents, my
brother, my sister and me. I love going for long walks along
the seafront with them and going swimming in the sea.
I enjoy meeting my friends. We usually go to the cinema, or
the shops. I love shopping! Once I get my pocket money, I
rush off to the local mall and spend it all!

Hi Paul,
Greetings from Cape Town! I am here with my family and
we are having a great time. We have been here for a week
now and have already seen and done so much.
On Friday we went diving with great white sharks! I was so
excited as I have never seen a shark before. It was the
perfect day, we went out on the boat and took it in turns to
put on a diving suit and be lowered down in the cage. At one
point I had two huge sharks swimming around me. It really
was a hair-raising experience. If you ever get the chance to
go to South Africa you really should go on one of these trips.
It was an unforgettable experience.
Hope you are having a fun time too. See you soon!
Love,
Roger

Last Saturday ten-year old Tammy Parton decided she
wanted to explore her local park. Tammy usually went there
with her parents, but this time she went alone. After walking
around the park for half an hour or so, Tammy realised that
she was lost. She couldn’t find a sign post anywhere, so she
sat under a bush and cried.
When she didn’t return for dinner, her parents realised that
there must be something wrong and called the police. When
the police arrived at the park, they found Tammy at the exit.

Life will be worse without mobile phones
In my opinion, life will be worse in the future if we stop
using mobile phones. Most people cannot imagine life
without them.
I think that communication will be more difficult. If we need
to contact friends or relatives, it will be harder to do so
especially if they or we are constantly on the move.
All in all, mobile phones are important in our daily lives.
Without mobile phones our lives will be more difficult.
Suggested Answer Key
Life will be better without mobile phones
In my opinion, life will be better in the future if we stop
using mobile phones. Many people wish their mobile
phones wouldn’t ring all the time.
I think that people will be healthier. Not using the phone
means there will be no risk to our health from the radiation
emitted by mobile phones and so we will not suffer from
headaches or problems with our hearing.
All in all, mobile phones can cause problems in our daily
lives. Without mobile phones our lives will be simpler.

Dear Kim,
I’m really sorry to hear that you are not happy. I did go
through something similar three years ago, so let me give
you some advice.
The best thing you can do is to join after school clubs. This way,
you will get to know people better. You can also start a new
sport at school. If you play in a team, other children will want
to know more about you. Also, you should talk to old friends on
the phone or by email. This way, you won’t feel so lonely.
I really hope my advice helps make you feel better. Write
soon and let me know how you are doing.

Most people believe that life in the countryside, where there
is no pollution and noise, is better than anywhere else. But
what about life in the city, where many people choose to live
all their life?
There are certain advantages to living in the city. Firstly, there
is always something to do. It is easy to find a cinema and there
are many places to meet friends. Secondly, the hustle and
bustle of city life is an advantage for people who like to be
busy. It is difficult to feel isolated and lonely.
On the other hand, there are certain drawbacks to living
in the city. First of all, the pollution is terrible. All the
cars make it very difficult to breathe at times. Also, the
noise from traffic and car alarms is constant. The noise
can make it difficult to relax.
To sum up, there are both advantages and disadvantages to
living in the city. I believe that the city is the best place to live.
There is always something to do and it is easy to meet people.

Superman Returns is a fantasy film based on the
superhero, Superman. It stars Brandon Routh, Kate
Bosworth and Kevin Spacey.
The story begins with Superman returning to Earth from
the planet Krypton. When he arrives, he has to fight the
criminal genius Lex Luthor. Superman wins of course and
saves everyone once again.
I have always loved Superman because I love stories about
superheroes. They are really exciting. They have great

Mum: Well at least it’s not raining like it is here!
Test 1 – Listening
Freddy: So, Ally are you excited about our trip?
Ally: Oh yes, I can’t wait to go shopping in London. I’ve heard that
you can find the best bargains there.
Freddy: Why don’t you come on a walking tour of the city with me?
Ally: I don’t think so, Freddy. Why don’t you ask Sue?
Freddy: Sue isn’t going to be spending much time in the city. She’s
planning to spend time with a friend who lives there. Maybe I’ll talk to
Nathan.
Ally: Nathan is going on a tour of the city by bus. He told me so the
other day. He wants to see as many sights as he can.
Freddy: What about Bob? Do you think he will come with me?
Ally: I don’t think so. He wants to visit some museums and art galleries.
Why don’t you ask Mark to come with you? He’s going to the theatre
later on, but I think he’s free in the morning.
Freddy: Excellent! I’ll give him a call.
Test 2 – Listening
A: Hi, Jane. How are you? Have you recovered from your experience?
B: Yes thanks. I’m fine. Who would have thought there would be
a flood in the middle of our school trip?
A: I know. It’s unbelievable. Tell me all about it. How did you
cope with all those students in an emergency?
B: Well, of course David Green was very excited but thank goodness
for Harry Jones. I can tell you! I thought he would be terrified but
he was very calm and he helped me take control of the situation.
A: That is a surprise. I suppose all the girls were screaming with fear.
B: Some were. Sally was especially terrified because she can’t swim
and as you know the school bus was stuck in the flood water.
A: Yes. Didn’t her best friend Mary try to calm her down or was
she scared too?
B: A little but she was so surprised that she was quite speechless.
Mike Green kept going on about his expensive new trainers, he
was worried about getting them wet. It was quite funny.
A: Well at least you all got back in one piece. I expect you were
relieved when you made it home safe and sound.
B: Yes. All the kids were tired and relieved. Susan was so tired
she fell asleep and missed the big rescue.
A: Well, that’s kids for you. So when’s the next school trip?
B: Very funny! You can go on that one!

M: Look at this! A safari in Africa! I’d love to do that.
F: Yes, but it’s very expensive. We can’t afford it.
M: I don’t want to go camping again this year. What about a
short cruise somewhere?
F: Alright. Let’s see if there are any special deals.
What is John doing?
A: Where’s John? Has he gone swimming already?

Test 4 – Listening
Police officer: Good morning. Can you please tell me your name?
Lady: Yes, of course. It’s Judy. Judy Smith.
Police officer: Can you tell me what time you saw the accident?
Lady: Well, I usually walk my dog every morning at 9 am and I am
back home by 10:30 so it was at about 11:00 when I was driving to
my mum’s house.
Police officer: OK, so it was at 11. Please go on.
Lady:Well, I was driving down Dacey Street when I saw a florist
shop on Mark Street. I wanted to buy some flowers so I parked near
the corner of Mark Street and General Drive.
Police officer:So is that where the accident happened?
Lady: Yes, that’s right.
Police officer: Let me just write that down. On the corner of Mark
Street and General Drive. And what happened?
Lady: A red car was speeding down Mark Street and came round
the corner on the wrong side of the road.
Police officer: So the car hit the bus then, is that right?
Lady: Yes, it crashed into the bus which was driving along General
Drive.

Hi, Kate! Come in! Tell me about the talk! Was it interesting?
Yes, I learned a lot. For example, are those your keys there?
Yes. Why?
Well, you should never leave keys near doors or windows,
especially if they’re open.
Why not?
Well, someone may come in and take your keys. And they
know where you live, too!
You’re right! What else did you learn?
Well, you should always sleep with your mobile phone beside
the bed. And you should keep it switched on.
I see! That way, you can contact the police immediately.
Yes. And if you have a garden, you should have dusk-to-dawn
outside lights.
That’s a good idea.
And these should be two and a half metres high, at least.
And was there anything else?
Yes. If a stranger knocks on your door, always ask them for ID.

What does Sally enjoy doing the most?
Boy: So Sally, how was your weekend? Did you go ice skating
like you said?
Girl: Well, I wanted to go with Ann, but she got sick. Besides, I’m
not that fit, anyway. I prefer doing things that are more artistic.
Boy: Oh, you mean like painting?
Girl: Well, I find painting really boring. Actually, I’m really
interested in songwriting.
Where did Lori and Kimberly go?
Lori: I had a great time, Kim! Thanks so much for inviting
me. It was so much better than the book.
Kimberly: Well, I’m glad you enjoyed it, Lori.
Lori: And I loved the acting!
Kimberly: Yeah me, too! Cindy Smith was fantastic! She
looked fantastic on stage and the costumes – wow!
What is Annabel’s hair like?
Girl: Is that you, Annabel? Wow! I love your hair like that. It
looks so much better long.
Annabel: Thank you!
Girl: Your hair used to be straight, right?
Annabel: Yeah, I got tired of my hairstyle and I wanted a
different look.
Girl: Well, curly hair really suits you. You look great!

You know, the one that’s won so many awards.

Gloria: But Emily, we did that last night.
Emily: Oh, yeah. Right. Um, what about the cinema, then?
We could see the new James Bond film.
Gloria: OK. Great!
Who are Tara and Adam talking about?

Adam: Isn’t he that famous doctor from Canada who moved
to our town last year?
Tara: No! You’re talking about Philip Austin! And he wasn’t a
doctor, he was an astronaut.
Adam: Oh, now I remember! Philip Smith is that young
artist. He’s only eleven years old, right?
Tara: Yes, that’s right!

Peter: Hello there. Can you tell me what films are on today, please?
Ticketseller: Well, on Screen one, we have Lovewrecked, and we
are showing that three times today.
Peter: Oh that’s the romance, isn’t it? I don’t like romances so much.
Have you got anything else?
Ticketseller: Let me see … well, we have two comedies showing on
Screens two and three. Screen two is Shrek the Third starting at

you would enjoy these films very much.
Peter: Excellent! I love comedies. Is that all you have today?
Ticketseller: Well we do have one more screen, Screen four which
will be playing an evening show of Harry Potter. But it is very full
and you won’t have a very good view of the screen.
Peter: In that case, I would like two tickets for Shrek the Third please!
