Chapter ll
When it comes to science and practice, these two methods are entirely different. In order
to understand the similarities between both methods, adding any type of scientifically derived
textbook knowledge will be beneficial. These textbooks focus on how important evidence-based
practice consisting of sport and exercise psychology. In order to fully grasp the and understand
what scientifically derived knowledge is, you need to understand the scientific method. Science
is a process/method, of learning about the world through experience. The scientific method is
made up of four general guidelines which are used to test for example, a child’s self-esteem. The
systematic approach involves standardizing the conditions, for example, one can assess the
child’s self-esteem under similar conditions. Control of the specific conditions, such as key
variables or elements are the focus of the study. In order for the primary relationship to not be
bothered of changed variables need to be controlled. The scientific method is purely based on
observation which is known as being empirical. Any evidence provided during the method must
support the beliefs and be open to observation. Once the evidence is provided, the scientific
becomes critical, meaning that the evaluation by the researcher and other scientists begin. This
makes sure that the conclusions are reliable.
Psychologists believe that thinking, or any thought, is the key to determining behavior.
Psychologists embrace a cognitive-behavioral orientation on the athlete's behaviors to determine
this. Psychologists might develop measures to observe or determine someone's self-confidence,
anxiety, goals, imagery, and intrinsic motivations. Once the information is obtained, the
psychologist can see how the athlete's behavior is affected by how the athlete thinks. An example
of this would be how a group of tennis players who are considered to be burned out are
compared to another group of tennis players who are not burned out. The information gathered
from the two groups was that the tennis players who were not burned out had more motivation
than those who were burned out. Therefore, the connection between the thoughts and actions of
athletes and their burnout status was analyzed.
Sport and exercise psychology has gained recognition as a sport science that is useful and
practical. It is receiving more attention and acknowledgment worldwide. Nowadays, several
universities offer sport and exercise psychology courses, and some graduate programs include up
to six courses. Furthermore, there are increasing research and professional resources available.
With the latest information, physical activity professionals can make significant progress towards
achieving their goals.
