Semester 2 – Exam Preparation
Purpose
Audience
Form
Explorer’s Daughter
Informing people of the
difficulty of the moral
dilemma- The Innuit need to
hunt in contrast to our
instinctive feeling that hunting
is morally wrong.
Today most people would
argue against hunting saying
that it is morally wrong and
that humans have no right to
kill other species for their own
benefit. But what people don’t
know is tat many people still
rely on hunting as food for
survival. The hunting of the
narwal has long been a
tradition and a vital pat of their
lifestyle for the Innuits.
Audience may be varied but
more complex language and
factual information used will
suit a mature audience.
Audience interest is also
needed in the debate on the
life and culture of the Innuits.
Game of Polo
Levine chose to travel on a
one-year trip around Asia. This
resulted in her writing ‘A Game
of Polo with a Headless Goat’,
which was then developed into
a documentary.
She wants to inform readers
about the traditions and
culture of the exotic places she
is visiting, and also to entertain
readers
Written in the form of a
personal memoir/ travel
writing. The author describes

Bhutan- Beyond the sky
To narrate her experience, to
inform, to pay tribute to
Bhutan and its people.
Although visiting as a social
worker, she is awed by the
beauty of the country and its
people. She writes of the
distant land known as the last
Shangri-La on Earth with grace
and self-deprecating humour.
Zeppa relinquishes her North
American sense of self and
begins an exploration of
Bhutanese culture and
Buddhist philosophy that
ultimately becomes a love
affair, both figuratively and
literally.
Travel enthusiasts, especially
those interested in remote,
lesser-known cultures.
Explorers or Boys
Though primarily to inform
readers of current events, the
reporter also uses the
opportunity to criticize the
actions of ‘wealthy explorers.’
He means to lambast, ridicule
and affect change in those
who ‘have fun’ at the cost of
the tax payers.
At a time when the people are
curious and watchful about
how governments disburse tax
collections, the journalist takes
it upon him to highlight such
irresponsible behaviour as a
topic of discussion

own perspective based on the

personal as she reflects on the
moral issue; conflict between
understanding the needs of
the Innuits and the survival of
the beautiful and unusual
narwhals.
A persuasive tone to inform
the audience as she presents
the moral dilemma. When
describing the narwhals in
their tranquil setting, she uses
descriptive language and
imagery. However, she uses
factual information and a

She starts by building
anticipation. Her reference to
‘Whacky Races’ has tones of
humour on the chaos.
She is amused by the race, and

over something she might
think ‘ridiculous’
Her enthusiasm for Bhutan and
its people is infectious and her
descriptions of her encounters
with Bhutanese culture are
often funny and always
enlightening.
Though Bhutan initially
frustrates her, it eventually
captivates Zeppa with its
rudimentary lifestyle that
forces her to question former
values and plans for the future.
In describing the narwhals and
the ocean they live in, she
paints a surreal scene, showing
her fascination. She uses a host
of language and structural
devices to engage the reader.
She uses a tri-structure is
