The Marks of an Educated Man Alan Simpson Upon reading the essay, “The Marks of an Educated Man”, by Alan Simpson, I was not really able to grasp on to what the author was trying to connect to me on the first reading. The essay was long and full with deep words and phrases. But after reading the essay a couple of times, I realized what the author was trying to say, that an educated man is a combination of knowledge, moral values, and thinks with a clear mind. Also, there was a line in the essay that struck me the most, “an educated man ought to know a little about everything and a lot about something”. Therefore, I came to ask myself, am I an educated man? Growing up, I was able to see different kinds of people, different cultures, intellects, and upbringings. I can see and educated man when I see one, it is not based only if you finished a degree in college, yes that is a factor, but there are many more to be called educated. For example, I am educated when I know and follow the rules and laws in my country, at the same time, I question and clarify it when I see misconceptions in it. Another one is when I respect and honor the children, women and the elderly. Also, when I can judge and decide when I’m getting false information from the real one. There are many situations where I can be seen as an educated man, but in the end, I should be the one who should be able to identify myself. An educated man is a man not only filled with knowledge, but one who can think clearly and has high morale. As a line in a famous film says, “manners maketh man”. We can achieve respect from other people even if we are “average”, we achieve respect from values and manners. And based from what I said, I can now conclude that I am indeed, an educated man.
