(a) Relate the story of the birth of 3esus in Bethlehem (Luke 2: 1-7)
In those days Caesar Augustus issued a decree that a census should be
taken of the entire Roman world.
This was the first census that took place while Quirinius was govern of
Syria.
Everyone, then, went to register himself, each to his own town.
Joseph went from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to the town of
Bethlehem in Judaea, the birth place of King David.
Because he belonged to the house and line of David.
He went there to be registered with Mary.
Who was pledged to be married to him and was expecting a child.
While they were there in Bethlehem, the time came for her to have her
baby.
She gave birth to her first son, wrapped him in strips of cloth and laid
him in a manger.
There was no room for them to stay in the inn.

Mark 6:17-22
Herod himself had ordered john’s arrest, and he had him tied up and put in
prison. Herod did this because of Herodias, whom he had married, even though
she was the wife of his brother Phillip.
John the Baptist kept telling Herod, it isn’t right for you to marry your brother’s
wife.
So Herodias held a grudge against john and wanted to kill him, but she could not
because of Herod.
Herod was afraid of john because he knew that John was a good and holy man,
and so he kept him safe. He liked to listen to him, even though he became greatly
disturbed every time he heard him.
Finally Herodias got her chance. It was on Herod’s birthday, when he gave a feast
for all the top government officials, the military chiefs, and the leading citizens of
Galilee.
The daughter of Herodias came in and danced, and please Herod and his guests.
So the king said to the girl, what would you like to have? I will give you anything
you want.
With many vows he said to her, I swear that I will give you anything you ask for,
even as much as half my kingdom!
So the girl went out and asked her mother, what shall I ask for? The head of John
the Baptist, she answered.
The girl hurried back at once to the king and demanded, I want you to give me
here and now the head of John the Baptist on a plate!
This made the king very sad, but he could not refuse her because of the vows
he had made in front of his entire guest.
So he sent off a guard at once with orders to bring john’s head. The guard left,
went to the prison, and cut John’s head off;
Then he brought it on a place and gave it to the girl, who gave it to her mother.
When john’s disciples heard about this, they came and got his body and buried it.

would come and lick his sores.
The poor man died and was carried by the angels to sit beside Abraham at the
feast in heaven. The rich man died and was buried. And in Hades, where he was in
great pain, he looked up and saw Abraham, far away, with Lazarus at his side.
So he called out, father Abraham! Take pity on me, and send Lazarus to dip his
finger in some water and cool off my tongue, because I am in great pain in this
fire!
But Abraham said, remember, my son, that in your lifetime you were given all the
good things, while Lazarus got all the bad things. But now he is enjoying himself
here, while you are in pain.
Besides all that, there is a deep pit lying between us, so that those who want to

(a) Give an account of Jesus’ washing his disciples’ feet. (John 13: 3 — 15)
Jesus knew that the Father had given him complete power; he knew that he had
come from God and was going to God.
So he rose from the table,
took off his outer garment,
and tied a towel around his waist.
Then he poured some water into a washbasin and began to wash the disciples’
feet
and dry them with the towel around his waist.
He came to Simon Peter, who said to him, are you going to wash my feet, Lord?
Jesus answered him, you do not understand now what I am doing, but
you will understand later.
Peter declared, never at any time will you wash my feet!
If I do not wash your feet, Jesus answered, you will no longer be my disciple.
Simon Peter answered, Lord, do not wash only my feet, then! Wash my han.ds
and head, too!
Jesus Said, those who have taken a bath are completely clean and do
not have to wash themselves, except for their feet.
All of you are clean -- all except one.
(Jesus already knew who was going to betray him; that is why he said, all of you,
except one, are clean.)
After Jesus had washed their feet, he put his outer garment back on and returned
to his place at the table. Do you understand what I have just done to you? he
asked.
