It is a registered private company in the Republic of Kenya. The company is situated at Oyugis along Kisii-Kisumu Road. It also registered in ministry of Road at class E and the ministry of public work at class G. The Company was established with the objective of the business of constructing engineering in the widest sense, structural, electrical work as per memorandum and the articles of association of the company. It has seasoned personnel who have gained considerable expertise and technical skills in the field of construction and general supplies environment for over ten years. Tommins construction company limited recognized that information is a basic commodity in everyone’s life and make sure that the services they provided are responsive the users and will translate to both individual and community empowerment. The company wishes to provide this services to everyone satisfaction. 9 OPERATIONAL ACTIVITIES During my engagement with the company, I was able to gain knowledge in the following areas; Setting out of: outfalls, cross culverts, side drains Construction {reinforced concreting base of outfalls and walling of outfalls, construction of columns and bases of water supports} Mixed concrete design: cement, sand and aggregate in the appropriate ratio Interpretation of plans of culverts and outfalls 10 ACHIEVEMENTS I achieved the following skills and experiences in the following areas; Setting up foundation Construction of slab, reading and interpretation of a plan Constructing of beams and pillars Concrete mixed designs of different classes {class 15/20, 25/20, 25/30} 11 PROBLEMS AND CHALLENGES 1. Lack of enough protective gears this was the major challenges, works failed to put on protective gears gush as helmets, safety boats and gloves since they were not enough. Works ended with some injuries 2. Lack of materials-There was inadequacy of materials and work stalled for several days before resumption this leads to wastage of time. 12 SOLUTIONS 1. Enough protective clothing and equipment’s should be acquired before starting of the project safety is major factor that should be put into consideration before anything else 2. To deal with lack of materials concerned parties should do early requisition of materials before they are completely over to avoid stalling and wastage of time 13 CONCLUSION Tommins construction company limited allows students to apply and put what has been learned in class into practice. This exposes me to work methods not taught in the class. It also provides an opportunity to assess my interest in career in civil engineering and also acquaint me with expectations of working in a highly competitive environment. This attachment with Tommins construction company limited has made me gain much practical knowledge and experiences in my field of study as well as enriching me with the interaction with the various categories of people. The training has instilled me some integrity like being punctual, being submissive to and taking views of supervisors, communication skills and efficient in task and problem management. As a result, my objectives were met and well achieved. Not only did I gain practical skills but also acquired management, self-motivation and good interpersonal skills. This training program should therefore be maintained for students to learn more practically as this has being an excellent and rewarding experience and I hope other interns achieved as much as I did. I was able to grow my interest in my career and make good transition from what I have been learning from school to the outside world of work. 14 1.2. RECOMMENDATIONS The attachment is very beneficial to students as it assists us to blend academic work with that of the industry therefore much emphasis and importance should be given to attachment exercise by the students. Since the experience for the 12 weeks was enormous. Here are some recommendations that seeks the kind consideration of the Tommins company authority which the author thinks may be helpful for the better future of the company works: The institution should allow enough time to the students for their preparation and search of their attachment and their requirements as provided by the institution as early as possible. The manuscript collections should be fully digitized by using CD-ROM technology so that the researcher can easily access them without any threat of being damaged by heavy use. . Tommins construction should concentrate to increase the facilities in prier before the work kick off. 15 16
