Developing an Argument for Yourself
Part 1 – Collect the Data:
Reflect on your academic and professional experience. Create a list of skills and strengths you
possess that make you an attractive candidate to a potential employer. Next to each attribute,
briefly note the evidence that supports your claim.
Skill/Strength
1. Domain knowledge
2. Financial Acumen
3. Technical Expertise
4. Leadership skill
5. Attention to Detail:
Supporting Evidence
My academic journey, which includes a master’s degree
in advanced accounting and taxation and the prestigious
Chartered Accountant certification, (US CPA equivalent)
enables me to bring a deep understanding of financial
and accounting matters to the table.
My professional trajectory spans roles in auditing,
accounting, tax compliance, and private equity fund
accounting. This diverse experience equips me with a
practical understanding of financial operations and
creative problem-solving, which are all invaluable assets
to the company.
My proficiency and familiarity with ERP accounting
software such as Investran, Oracle NetSuite, Tally ERP 9,
and Finacle demonstrate my technical prowess. This
expertise is crucial for maintaining transparent financial
records
My role as an Associate in Audit, where I led audit
teams, reported directly to engagement partners, met
deadlines, and handled multiple responsibilities during
my internships, including team planning, highlights my
leadership abilities
My work experience in audit and accounting required a
high level of attention to detail. My experience in
vouching, verifying expenses, reconciling financial
transactions, and process improvements demonstrates
my attention to detail, a crucial quality for not only to
manage the finances and budgets but also to improve
operations and effectiveness.

Part 2 – Synthesize the Data:
Now that you have created your list with evidence, group your data into three categories for your
attributes. Identify commonalties between the attributes that link them. Not all of your attributes
may fit into a category. It is okay to narrow down your list. Write the names of your categories
below:
Category of Skills/Strengths
Skills/Strengths That Belong in This Category
1.
2.
3.
Part 3 – State Your Central Point:
Reflect on your skills and strengths and the three categories you created based on the synthesis of
the skills and strengths. If you summarized yourself in a single, simple statement, what would it
be?
What is your central point?: _____________________________________________________
Part 4 – Get Feedback:
Share your “argument” with a classmate or friend. Ask for feedback on it. Is it clear? Is it
directly relevant to your goal as expressed? Is it memorable? Does it distinguish you from other
people marketing themselves for the same job?
