Message boards featuring solar power and LED technology are two of the PSC innovations that are now widely used in highway and
construction zones. In 1988, we introduced the industry’s first viable solar arrow board for advance warning in work zones. Two years later,
PSC became part of the Stabler family of companies—a longtime leader in the work zone products industry.
Innovations continued throughout the 1990s with the first solar-powered
changeable message sign using LED technology (1992), optically enhanced LED
traffic signals (1994), the introduction of solar-powered LED traffic monitors (1994),
and cost-effective permanent message boards that can be programmed by
cellular phone (1996).

SMC 1000
The SMC-1000 Solar Message Center is a portable,
changeable message sign consisting of advanced LED (lightemitting diode) lamp matrix panels. These character panels
use patented optical assemblies that emit bright, distinctive
messages to the traveling public. They enhance legibility
and visibility while requiring less power than other types
of illuminated signage.

Solar-Assist Power
The SMC-1000 is powered by batteries, which are continually
recharged by solar panels for long-lasting service. Solar
power means no diesel fuel required, no pollution, noise,
fuel costs, fuel exhaust, engine maintenance, and caustic
pavement erosion.
LED Lamp Matrix Design
The SMC-1000 features a solid-state LED lamp matrix with
patented optical technology. That means increased legibility
and message definition for safer traffic conditions.
System Integrity
Solar powered systems require that the power used (load) be
supported by an adequate energy storage facility (battery bank)
and generator (solar panels). The Solar Message Center is
capable of operating independently of sunlight for 30 days from
the battery bank and requires only 2-1/2 hours of good sunlight
for each additional day of operation. These parameters
reflect extended operation without interruption under normal
weather conditions.
Environmentally Sound Operation
The Solar Message Center uses the sun as a generator,
eliminating any potential of environmental contamination.
Modular Electronic Components
The entire system was developed with the operator in mind.
Modules are easily replaced, dramatically reducing downtime

The SMC 1000 ST is capable of operating independently of sunlight

array is sized to provide one day’s power requirement in just 2.5
hours of good sunlight. This combination of extended day’s use

SMC 2000 - Full Matrix
As the pioneer in the design of LED-based, solar powered,
changeable message signs, Precision Solar Controls offers the
Full-Matrix Solar Message Center. Full-matrix display allows
graphic symbols, as well as variable text heights from 20 to 28
inches for safer work zones.
The Model SMC-2000 Message Center is a portable,
changeable message sign consisting of LED lamp matrix
panels and special optical assemblies in a continuous
“Full-Matrix” format. This allows you to display text messages

Full-Matrix Design
The continuous, full-matrix design allows the display of
messages using text, graphic symbols or both. Graphic symbols
are displayed at a standard 50-inch height and text messages
are displayed using either 20" or 28" tall characters.
LED Lamp Matrix
The SMC-2000 uses advanced LED technology. The LEDs are
positioned under special optics, enhancing the light from
each pixel and making the message legible from up to 1,400
feet away.
Solar-Assist Power
The Full-Matrix Message Center is powered by deep-cycle
batteries for long-lasting service. The batteries are recharged
by a solar panel array sized to provide optimum charge
capability. This design allows for 30 days of operation without
sunlight and recharges the batteries for a full day of operation
with only 2-1/2 hours of good sunlight.
Pre-Programmed Text And Graphics
The SMC-2000 comes standard with 250 text messages
and 60 graphic symbols in the system’s computer. The preprogrammed messages help minimize set-up time, making
overall operation easier. Additionally, the unit has the capacity
to include 100 customized messages.
Remote Programming Capability
In conjunction with the remote communication option, the
SMC-2000 gives you the ability to create messages from a
remote location using a laptop or desktop computer.

RADAR Options
Includes cellular GPS data modem for remote programming
with access to NTCIP-compliant web page and mapping
capability. Designed for wireless internet service, this option
is available as modem only for customers who have existing
NTCIP base station platform, or is available with Precision
Solar Controls’ NTCIP-compliant web page access.
All radar options perform the same
basic function. The radar antenna is
mounted on the unit and will monitor
the speed of oncoming traffic. When
the user programmable parameters
are met by an approaching vehicle,
it triggers a chosen message to display on the signboard.
These options can be upgraded to existing units and include all
necessary hardware to mount the antenna to the board, and
do not require special software in the CPU. The Mini Message
boards must be taken to a certified repair facility for
this option.

adapted to other providers with minor programming alterations.
This option is field upgradeable after the CPU has been sent in
