Double Entry Journal for Early Cinema (1893-1903).png 1 of 1 https://classroom.google.com/u/1/w/MzQ5OTY4MjMxNjc1/t/all “By 1893, Thomas A. Edison’s assistant, W. K. L. Dickinson, developed a camera that made short 35mm films. Interested in exploiting these films as a novelty, Edison hoped to combine them with his phonograph to show sound movies.” “Although the Lumière brothers did not invent cinema, they largely determined the specific form the new medium was to take. Edison himself was soon to abandon the Kinetoscopes and form his own production company to make films for theaters.” This quote drew my attention due to Thomas Edison being involved in the history of early cinema. I had never thought he was involved in the history and that he tried to create films with his assistant using the phonograph and later creating the kinetoscope. This impacts my opinion on early cinema as it shows me that cinema back then was relevant and still important for not only entertainment, but to document activities and help the world. “Later, World War I was to restrict the free flow of films from country to country, and Hollywood emerged as the dominant industrial force in world film production contributing to the creation of distinct differences in the formal traits of individual national cinemas.” This quote drew my attention as it helped see why Hollywood is so famous for cinema. I did not know World War I had such a big effect on the filming world and made Hollywood what it is now. It was intriguing how the film world still stayed in Hollywood and how it kept its fame even after the war ended. This impacts my opinion on early cinema as it showed me how big of an impact World War I had on not only people, but industries like cinema. The cinema world is important to our culture and can even be effected by events like war. This quote drew my attention to the fact that these brothers continued the work of Edison and was able to make the technology that helped these films come to the screen. They impacted the cinema world and helped cinema grow to what it is today. This impacts my opinion on cinema because of the hard work many people went through to create the filming technology of their time and how because of them, we have evolved their technology to what we have today. 12/18/22, 5:35 PM
