WINEGARS BAPTIZED AT MORMON RUN, ERIE CO.
PA. 1833
The following account tells of several people, including Samuel T. Winegar, his wife and two
children, baptized by Mormon missionaries near a creek called "Mormon Run" in Erie
County, PA. It is part of an Open Letter to the Erie Branches, dated July 26, 1974, signed by
V. Alan Curtis, 490 Date St., Tooele, UT. It will be of interest to the many descendants of
Samuel T. Winegar living around Salt Lake City, as well as to others. Some of the descendants
of Samuel T. Winegar are traced in the article which follows this one (See page 9).
Dear Branch Members:
First of all, I would really like to thank you for your friendliness and cooperation
while I've been here. I have found some very good background information and a
little specifically Mormon information. I would like to here share some of that
information with you, as well as some gleaned from missionaries journals out in the
Church Historical Department in Salt Lake City. This is being done for two
purposes: One, to let you share in the fun of knowing how prominent Erie County
was in the early missionary movement in the Church and maybe get you starting or
continuing to dig into your genealogical past; and Two, maybe to help me by
sending any new information about the Mormons in Erie County from 1830 to
about 1838.
The following are people that were baptized in Erie County (PA) by John F.
Boynton (of the first Quorum of Twelve Apostles) and Evan M. Greene from
January 20th, 1833 to March 27th, 1833:
At Springfield: Levi ALLEN, Fanny HALL, Alvin HARTSHOME (or
HARTSHORN), Horace MARTIN, John QUINCY, William THOMPSON,
Clarissa TYLER, 2 boys of Brother TYLER, Samuel T. WINEGAR, Rhoda
WINEGAR, John and Alvira WINEGAR.
At Taylor Settlement (maybe Albion): Benjamin ELLS, and Eunice WELLS.
At Elk Creek: Lovicy CAMPBELL, Elizabeth P. COLE, Derby DeWOLF, Robert
W. DIMSEY, Susannah DIMSEY, Jane FULLER, Jedediah M. GRANT, Emily
HARMON; James JOLES, 'Nancy JOLES, Moses MARTIN, Joel PERREM (or
PARSON), Desdimony SAGERS, John SAGERS, Lery SAGERS, William H. H.

SAGERS, Henrietta SANFORD, Olive A. VAUN, John VAUN, Polly, Walde, Dinnis
WELLS, Mary WILCOX. Benjamin WINCHESTER, Daniel WINCHESTER,
Pauline WINCHESTER, Stephen WINCHESTER, and Nancy WINCHESTER.
At 8 location not listed but given in the same list: Lovicy CLARK, and Alonzo
WINCHESTER.
The following were listed as being baptized by the above two men, but perhaps at a
later date and the place is not given: Blake BALDWIN, Asenath BALDWIN,
Henry BALDWIN, Gideon CANFIELD, Almira CARR, Ira CLOTHIER, Amy
CLOTHIER, Palova CLOTHIER, Narcissa CLOTHIER, Phidelia COLTRIN,
Theopoles CROSS, Henry DEIGHTON, Lucinda HARMON, Nemiah HARMON,
Oliver HARMON, Elizabeth HARMON, Orsey HARMON, Orrilla HARMON,
Lucy HARPER, Hannah HOLEMBECK, Sophia HOUGHTON, Clarissa JOLES,
John LODDY, Louisa LORD, Lydia LOW, Abigail MATTHEWS, Marcus
MATTHEWS, James PARSHAL, John PARSHAL, Margaret PARSHAL, Sally
PARSHAL, William PARSHAL, Mary PRESTON, Malinda PRIEST, Amanda
SAGERS, Jaharill SANFORD, William SANFORD, Patience SANFORD, Marshall
TURNER, Polly TURNER, Charles VAUN, Nancy VAUN, Daniel VAUN, Joel
VAUN, Benjamin WILCOX, and Elisa WRIGHT.
Two men who were visited by Bishop Edward PARTRIDGE and Isaac MORLEY
in June 1835 in Springfield were Brother HARTSHORN and Brother J. DeWOLF
and in Gerard (should be Girard) they stayed with Brothers J. SAGERS and
Marshall TURNER. Jared CARTAR and associates visited Brother Joseph
HEART and Brother READ in the county in 1831 or 1832. They also baptized the
following in Springfield or elsewhere in the county: Randil WHEELER,
Experience WHEELER, Andrew M. C. ADAMS, Abigail SPENSER, Cornelia
CATTLES, Fanny Mariah RUDD, Cloa RUDD, and Phoebe THOMPSON.
The spelling of the above names is highly suspect since it was just recorded
somewhat haphazardly in longhand that is difficult to decipher.
--The probable route for the many missionaries that crossed Erie on their way to
their self-appointed (usually) missions of 8 few weeks to many months in New York
or New England was on the Ridge Road, which followed most of what is today
Highway 20. Three of the histories of Erie County in Erie Metropolitan Library
refer to a creek called "MORMON RUN" which entered the east branch of
Conneaut Creek about 1 1/2 miles north-east of Albion borough. The history said
that the creek was thus named because the Mormons, who were once numerous in
the area, did their baptizing there.
Those are some of the names and facts involved with Mormon missionary work in
Erie County in the 1830's. I would appreciate anything that you might find dealing
with any of the above people or perhaps other members or maybe non-members'
reactions at the time to the Mormons or to their family members or friends that
joined the Church. I would like some corroborating evidence of "Mormon Run."
Something that would indeed be priceless would be a diary or information from
such a book that was contemporary with these people. There must be some around.

There were about 17,000 people in the county in 1830 and a few of that number
must have written down some comments for themselves or their posterity, but the
Historical Society doesn't know of any, yet. :
