HISTORY OVERVIEW ANALYSIS POV The genocide was sparked by the death of the Rwandan President Juvenal Habyarimana who was nicknamed ‘invincible’ and was the 2nd president, a Hutu, when his plane was shot down above Kigali airport on 6 April 1994. A French judge blamed the leader of a tutsi rebel group and his associates. There have always been disagreements between the majority Hutus and minority Tutsis, the Belgians considered tutsi to be superior to the hutus so they enjoyed better jobs and rights, and hutus were oppressed masses . And when Belgium granted Rwanda its independence, The minority which are the tutsis ruled the country. ( tutsi 14% while the hutu were 85%) The hutus resented this idea so they killed over 20000 tutsis n August 1993, after several attacks and months of negotiation, a peace accord was signed between Habyarimana and the RPF, but it did little to stop the continued unrest.
