The Perfect Crime
Exposition/Introduction/Setting
6 pm. Alice Jackson – living room – waiting for husband Henry to come home from work.
She - smiling – her tenth wedding anniversary – had invited 20 guests for dinner. In the middle of the dining room – a
statue of a couple holding hands – made of ice. Happy with her life - a beautiful baby sleeping upstairs in the bedroom - a
lovely house - a husband whom she loved very much.
Alice - to the window to look out for Henry. Outside, the weather - fine. The clouds - like cotton balls drifting in the clear
blue sky. smiling yellow sunflowers - sitting like pretty maids in a row. bees played hide and seek with them as they
buzzed from one flower to another. Then, saw his car arriving at gate. No idea that in the next two minutes her life was
going to change.
Rising Action
Henry opened door – entered house. Alice – a kiss on the cheek – into the kitchen - get him a cold drink from the fridge.
Sit down. I have something to say, Henry said. I know it’s our wedding anniversary, but I can’t pretend anymore, he
continued. Kathy and I are in love and I want a divorce. Bobby won’t miss me; he’s too young.
didn’t believe her ears. She - in a dream. face turned pale - heart thumping in chest.
Climax
I’ll get ready for the party, she said. went into the living room. When she returned - carrying something heavy. Henry standing with his back towards her - drinking his beer. He turned.
What on earth…?
Those were Henry Jackson’s last words. - wife hit him on the head.
Falling Action
At first – didn’t move. Then – fell onto floor.
Suddenly – began to think clearly – took the ice statue back to living room – phoned the police – then turned up the central
heating – went upstairs to put on some make-up.
Police arrived quickly
Is he alright she asked.
He's dead.
Alice screamed. No, no, not Henry My Henry Oh Henry
Through her tears - told how she had gone upstairs to put the baby to bed - came downstairs - found Henry on the kitchen
floor.
Burglars said Detective Parry. - took her into the living room.
Sit down, Mrs Jackson. Sergeant Taylor, get Mrs Jackson a drink. A brandy with some ice. Phew! It's hot in this room. I
hope you understand, Mrs Jackson, that we have to search the house immediately. We must find the murder weapon.
- room was getting hotter. Suddenly - arm fell off the ice statue onto the table - was melting. Sergeant Taylor went to statue
- picked up the melting arm. - broke it into bits - put some into Alice's brandy.
Phew Can I have a glass of water, Mrs Jackson. It's so hot in here.
I think we all need one said the detective. And with ice. They all - very hot and thirsty.
Resolution
- friends arrived. Poor Alice Poor Henry they cried - tried to comfort her.
Oh, thank you, thank you sobbed Alice. Please ... stay and have a drink. Help yourselves.
They all had drinks - gin and tonic, whisky - and they all had ice.
statue now nearly a pool of water on the floor.
I wonder what the burglar hit him with said one guest.
Who knows said another, taking a sip of her drink.
Alice heard this conversation - smiled into her brandy.
