By its definition, Media Studies is the analysis of the images, sounds and text we experience via the media, and the effects these images, sounds and text have on us, the audience. It involves looking closely at individual media texts (such as movies, YouTube channels, TV shows, mobile phone games, pop songs etc), or what I’m more familiar with; Mass Media, that I learned on Cultural Studies & Semiotics in the previous semester. Media studies draws upon theories, methods, and approaches from fields such as cultural studies, sociology, anthropology, psychology, and communication studies. It’s a broad field of studies that deals with the history, content and impact of various collective communication methods and tools. It includes both the analysis of images, sound and text, but also the technical side of effectively delivering media to audiences. Types of Media: Media can be classified into four types: Print Media (Newspapers, Magazines), Broadcast Media (TV, Radio), Outdoor or Out of Home (Billboards, Boarding, Neon signs), Media Internet (Social Media, YouTube channels) As to the Pros and Cons of learning Media Studies, first, Media studies can develop critical thinking skills by encouraging us to analyze and question media content and messages.This skill set is valuable in various fields and professions. In this digital era, there’s also a wide range of career opportunities available for this field, like journalists, public relations, film & televisions, etc. This field equips us with theoretical knowledge and practical skills that are relevant in today's media professions. The cons, on the other hand, The media landscape is constantly evolving, driven by technological advancements and changing audience behaviors. This fast-paced nature of the field can make it challenging to keep up with the latest trends and developments.
