ALKALINE CELLS 1 WHAT IS AN ALKALINE BETTERY? • An alkaline battery is a type of primary battery that derives its energy from the reaction between zinc metal and manganese dioxide. 2 ALKALINE CELLS Advantages of Alkaline Battery Disadvantage of Alkaline Battery • This has high energy density. • This battery performs equally well in both continuous and intermittent applications. • This performs equally well in low and as well as high rate of discharge. • This also performs equally well at ambient temperature as well as at low temperature. • Alkaline battery has also low internal resistance. • It has enough longer self life. • Leakage is low in this battery. • It has better dimensional stability. • Alkaline batteries also have a high internal resistance. This reduces the power output of a battery. In addition, while they are not as prone to leaking as some other types of cells and batteries, alkaline batteries will leak if left in devices unused for too long. 3 USES OF ALKALINE BATTERIES • Various types of this battery are there and different batteries are used for different purposes. Like, nickel-iron batteries are used for propulsion of industrial trucks and mine locomotives. In air conditions also, this type of battery is used. Another type of alkaline battery is Nickelcadmium battery; they get used in commercial airlines, military airplane for initiating the main engine. So, we can say that the alkaline battery is mainly used in moving vehicles and industrial purposes. 4 CAPACITY OF AN ALKALINE BATTERY • The capacity of an alkaline battery is greater than an equal size zinc chloride cell because the manganese dioxide is purer and denser, and less space is taken up by internal components such as electrodes. An alkaline cell can provide between three and five times the capacity of an acidic cell. 5 ALKALINE BATTERY VOLTAGE OF AN ALKALINE BATTERY CURRENT OF AN ALKALINE BATTERY • The nominal voltage of a fresh alkaline cell as established by manufacturer standards is 1.5 V. • The amount of electrical an alkaline battery can deliver is roughly proportional to its physical size. This is a result of decreasing internal resistance as the internal surface area of the cell increases. 6 CONSTRUCTION OF ALKALINE BATTERY • Alkaline batteries are manufactured in standard cylindrical forms interchangeable with zinc– carbon batteries, and in button forms.
