We’re All a Little Insane A merge between the For Your Entertainment characters into the We’re All a Little Insane universe. Evolved humans have been appearing all over the world for several decades, but their numbers are so small that when they are discovered they are easily eliminated. In the last twenty years, however, there was an epidemic of abnormal births. The government wanted to keep it a secret and eliminate the Abnormals at birth, but their parents disapproved. Instead, they set up a plan to send them to camps, where they can exist without the danger of being discovered by average humans. The theory is that at these camps they will be able to hone their powers and learn to control them with the hopes of one day being able to safely integrate themselves back into society. The camps, however, are not what they seem to be. The main camp is the tamest, as it is the one that is shown in the ads, but soon the campers realize that their peers are disappearing overnight and aren’t coming back. When they realize that their teachers and advisors are behind this, the remaining campers must escape the camp before they too are taken away. Once they escape, they discover that some of their peers have been taken to an experimental facility. There, they discover more Abnormals are being housed in camps all over the country and set out to save them. Maybe change it up to closer to a summer camp style for “troubled teens.” Each one has their own problems related to their ability, using excuses that sound like “normal” problems to hide their abilities from the world (ex: Angel has pyromania, Natalie has hallucinations, Netta is a pathological liar) Angel Delarosa: Angel grew up on the streets of San Juan, Puerto Rico. His only family was his mother, who was dirt poor, so he became very independent and often tried to find ways to provide for his mother. Eventually, his mother died, and he was left living on the streets. After some time of this, The Facility found him. Angel is a fire elemental and can create and manipulate fire in his hands. Though over time he has developed a tolerance to burns, his back and arms are marred with burns from when he was first trying to discover his abilities on his own. Antoinette “Netta” Turcotte: A manipulator by nature, this illusionist can make you believe that you are sensing whatever she wants you to, whether this is images, voices, or even entire landscapes. Her ability can manifest in two ways: in large-scale illusions targeted in one person’s mind by manipulating their sensory, or in (usually smaller) illusions that are projected for anyone to see. The projected ones take a lot more energy, so she tends to use the others even though they are less powerful. She has a quick wit and is highly intelligent, but is usually very quiet and prefers not to say much. As she finally warms up to the others, she reveals that she has a sharp tongue and a total potty mouth, putting slacker Isaac and New Yorker Matthew to shame with her creative insults and mash-up swears. In truth, Netta’s background is rather sad (she had been best friends with Marley all her life (who was also an Abnorm – the language guy with pink hair – so they kept mostly to each other because they were outcasts) and she accidentally drove him crazy because she didn’t have control over her illusions. He killed himself and it was blamed on her, and her parents became afraid.) She knows that she has nothing to go back to beyond the camp, so this has made her quite a bit bitter. Due to her past, however, she can be triggered to have panic attacks and PTSD-type experiences where her own illusions run wild and force her to have flashbacks. Barnaby “Isaac” Isaac: The ability to sprout sharp spikes from his body. The protrusions extend from his bones and can be detached if needed. Isaac’s theory is that since he doesn’t have healing abilities the spikes must come through his pores or something – he always says that when every other kid was getting acne he was having spikes stab through his skin. Although many of the other campers are terrified of him because of his bad attitude, Isaac is one of the heroes of the story and becomes involved once the others go missing. He uses a tough and uncaring exterior to hide the fact that he is very scared of what the world has in store for the Abnorms. He is accepting of Zinnia once she undergoes her transformation – almost overly so – but once he realizes that she will never be able to integrate into society joins Sebastian’s rebellion in the hopes for Abnorm acceptance. Dorian Whitlock: Enhanced senses, which is why he’s such a drama king (since he’s always complaining about a smell or sound no one else can hear). This includes hearing, seeing, smelling, and more. This is mostly used for recon purposes, as it’s really not very good in combat. Dorian is whiny and selfcentered, but he means well. Because he’s living with all of these super-powered individuals, he always feels like his ability isn’t good for anything since he has no way of protecting anyone. He puts on an air of self-confidence to hide the fact that he feels really inadequate compared to everyone else (the whininess, however, is totally genuine). Elena Harks: Pocket space! Elena is from a very rich family, so she is used to having everything, so when she sees something she wants at the camp she hides it away for herself. For this reason, she seems like a girl who really does have everything and can pull anything out of wherever she keeps it. In order to impress her Daddy whenever he inevitably picks her up (or so she thinks), she makes money around the camp by selling her coveted hidden items to other campers and even staff members. Eric Stoneleigh: Precognition. His normal senses and reflexes are enhanced because he is able to see glimpses of the future, though he cannot control them very well. He is athletically inclined because he uses his precognition to see a few seconds in the future to intercept others’ moves. However, sometimes it backfires and leaves him reacting too early. Eric is still obnoxious, but he isn’t as detested as his original character incarnation was. He’s annoying but he’s also some comic relief because his predictions allow him to always be in the right place at the right time to become involved in situations he isn’t wanted in (though he doesn’t seem to realize this despite how often people tell him to leave). Gabriel “Gabe” Patterson: Phasing. This ability might not seem threatening, but it is when he phases an object halfway through you and demands information. Gabe has never really lived a normal life, having gone from living the sheltered rich lifestyle to being sheltered at the camp, so he has a lot of finding himself to do. Most of what he knows about himself is based off of the summer before he was sent to the camp that he spent with his middle class aunt (since his parents were unsure of how to cope with the discovery of his abilities), who allowed him to experience life like a normal person for once. For the first time, he found himself attracted to someone, so one of the only things he’s certain of is that he’s probably gay. At the camp, he tends to be a follower, often serving as Elena’s crony because their similar backgrounds made him assume she would make him feel comfortable. He couldn’t have been more wrong, but by the time he realizes this he has made the others think he’s as cruel as Elena and doesn’t know how to approach them to tell them otherwise. Eventually, he becomes friends with Minerva and Risty, who cause him to open up. Hadley Marlowe: A copycat. She can copy something after seeing it once, whether it is a complicated painting technique or somebody’s power. The ability eventually fades unless she exposes herself to it again. However, the ability remains dormant somewhere in her mind, and when she experiences a panic attack she switches from Jekyll to Hyde and is able to manifest any ability she has previously absorbed. Since she was born with abnormally colored hair (either pink or green), her Abnormality was identified at birth. Hadley is also transgender – male to female – though nobody really acknowledges it until she and Dorian start to get involved. Irina Rostropovich: While many countries have been trying to keep the existence of Abnormals secret, Russia has outwardly rejected them and has declared that any Abnormal children will be exterminated upon reveal. Many families try to hide their children, but the Russians have started a policy in which they can raid suspected homes and arrest (or kill, though that part’s not exactly in the policy) anybody who has been harboring an Abnorm. Irina’s family thought they could hide her by putting her into the limelight as a model, but when her jealous sister Renata threatened to out her to the authorities, the Rostropoviches though the only viable option would be to send her to a camp in America. Irina has lightrelated powers. She radiates both because of her beauty and her mutation, which allows her to emit bursts of light. This is usually used for shielding and distractions, though it also works to burn others if she is able to emit enough light. If Paul mimics a metal, she can reflect the light off of him, sending a blinding and burning beam at their enemies. Kami Lin: A basic understanding of how things work and are put together just by looking at them. That usually is used for her to put inanimate objects together or take them apart, though when she turns bad she uses it to take people apart by exposing their weaknesses. Johanna Palmer: Maybe rock-based (since Zinnia is plant), air-based, or another Natural type ability Joshua Palmer: A master of empathy, he is able to change the mood of the people around him. Though this could be a catastrophic ability, he mainly uses it to keep everybody calm or happy, though his extreme anxiety causes him to often misdirect it, so he doesn’t use it as often as he should. He is totally nonverbal. While he is at the camp, he often hangs around Cara, whose sweet demeanor makes him comfortable, and Kami, who understands him due to her abilities (though he has no idea about her true nature). When Kami ends up going bad, Joshua stays with the good guys. Also, his character concept has totally changed – he’s not that shy anymore, he just has trouble getting to know people because he can’t speak. Also, he’s no longer the beautiful farm boy – he’s got a softer but muscular physique, a dark tan, and dark blond hair. Maybe explore the idea of him having a later developing relationship with Natalie? Laila Sharma: One of the rules of physics is that energy cannot be created or destroyed, and Laila’s abilities focus on that. She can absorb energy from other objects (usually in the form of electricity) and transfer it to other objects, which she can throw as a projectile to explode because of the overwhelming energy. These can also manifest as pure energy shots, which will throw somebody back and then be absorbed by the objects around them. She eventually discovers that she can transfer this energy to other Abnorms, charging up their abilities into overdrive (for example, charging Angel to make an overwhelming blaze, using it on Netta to make her even more powerful and sustain even more illusions at a time). One thing about Laila is that she likes to escape the camp. She really has no idea why she does it, but no matter what they do to try to keep her in she always breaks out and ends up wandering the city. She doesn’t even have anywhere to go, but sometimes she just needs to attempt to leave. They always send someone after her and she’s always brought back. Sometimes she anticipates being captured and brings back presents for everyone that she may or may not have stolen. After all, she never would really leave. She’s one of the originals and she would never leave her family alone. Langston Irvine: Acidic mucus, including spit and snot. When he is eventually experimented on, his acid erodes his body, making him more monster-like. When he is found at The Facility, he has been reduced to an animalistic state and must be carried around at first (probably by Robert until he … well, dies.) When Natalie is down, it’s actually the recovering Langston who tries to help her by spending time with her, touching her face or shoulder occasionally as a primitive form of affection. Lennox Leona: An electric current constantly sparking through her body, leaving a shock when people touch her. Because of her do-not-touch policy, she has a huge ego and thinks highly of herself, since people tend to shy away from her because of her dangerous ability. She eventually learns to spread her sparks outward, so that she can electrocute a floor and shock the people standing on it or shoot a bolt at something. Lennox grew up helping out at her family’s hair salon, and she has convinced her psychologists that doing hair is a good therapeutic technique for her. In truth, it’s so she has an excuse to order people to buy hair products so she can look good, but it’s also a way for her to get some human contact (through gloves and a thick apron, of course). Matthew Gallardo: Water abilities (which can sometimes manifest as ice if the weather’s right) – ironic because he can’t swim. Since there is water in the air, he does not need a source of water to use his abilities and can conjure it from the air. Later, he also realizes that since there is so much water in the human body he is able to move and freeze other people. Matthew is known for two things: his water and sleeping a lot. Seriously, the guy sleeps everywhere and anywhere. (Note: His relationship with Netta is not explicit – it’s more implied.) He loves music but is almost entirely deaf in one ear, so the camp provided him with a hearing aid that he hates to remove. When they’re escaping, the group realizes that the Facility somehow knows their location – they soon realize there is a tracking device in Matthew’s hearing aid, so he’s forced to ditch it. He’s an Italian New Yorker on his Dad’s side and an islander on his Mom’s. Minerva Konopka: A super voice, which is fitting because she is so talkative. The voice is ear-shattering but also causes vibrations that can shake the Earth and everything around her at full power. She’s very talkative but also very nervous, as she is always afraid that people won’t like her. Ever since her makeshift family of the originals fell apart, she feels left out and feels like a lot of the newer campers don’t feel comfortable with her even though she likes literally everyone. Natalie Talbot: Telepathy. She is constantly haunted by whispers in the back of her head, which are actually the thoughts of the people surrounding her. Eventually, she learns to project her own thoughts into others’ minds, which allows her to communicate with the others. However, all she has ever wanted is for the voices to go away, and when they find an Abnorm at The Facility (or the other camp) whose ability is to negate others’ powers as long as he is conscious, she might easily be tempted. Natalie has always been territorial about her looks and hair, and when she is taken to The Facility she is stripped of her makeup and has her hair cut off. Eventually she embraces her new appearance. Natalie can be a bit of a know-it-all and tends to think that she is always right. She tends to take matters into her own hands and often can get on others’ nerves because she thinks that only she can correctly fix things. She means well, but her intentions don’t come off as nicely as she hopes. Natalie was the first new arrival after the originals, so sometimes she is accused of being the one who began to unsettle the bonds around the camp. Natalie grew up with a politician father and a highly religious mother who always told her that the voices she heard were just angels talking to her. Her mother was afraid of her, but loved her so much that she thought she could fix her daughter through prayer. It wasn’t until her father started campaigning for governor that she was kicked out of her home and sent onto the street. Paul Adams: Able to absorb any material and transform into it. Although this originally was just for literal materials (metal, stone, etc.), he eventually reveals that he can do it with stranger things, like fire. This ability was originally used as an asset by a secret branch of military before he was sent to the camp, which has given him the loyalty and structured mindset despite the fact that he was essentially their tool. Though he is fit and has a very physical power, Paul’s greatest asset is his brain. He’s a bit morally black and white but very clever and intelligent and can often be the voice of reason among the escaping Abnorms. Paul is coming to the camp from The Scouts, a classified branch of military made up of himself and five (?) other young Abnormals who were used for secret operations by the United States army. When higher government officials found out about The Scouts, they were suddenly disbanded and Paul was sent straight to The Facility. Paul’s father was a high-ranking officer of the armed forces. When Paul’s abilities were revealed at a young age, his father accidentally revealed them to another officer, and he was quickly convinced that the right thing to do would be to turn his son over to the government, as he had no idea how to care for an Abnorm. Reid Cooper: Creates a shield around himself like a bubble, which forces anything that hits it to bounce back. If this is a physical object, it will literally ricochet off the shield, but if it is a power, it will be shot back at the user. Risty Cooper: Short range telekinesis, which she usually uses to fling objects at people or lift herself from the ground to fly. This ability works well with Laila’s, as Laila can charge something and Risty can fling it. Reid and Risty’s mother – Althea Cooper – is a young single mother whose kids were her everything, so they were taken away by Facility employees covering as child services. When Risty eventually makes it to the city, Althea happily takes everyone in in the motel (?) she manages. Robert Earhart: He might be physically imposing, but he’s actually the healer – that’s why he’s so eager to jump in front of bullets for his friends or protect others. (Robert takes the place of Trent as the one whose powers are negated and dies unexpectedly, though that means he can be with his family). Sebastian Dimitrov: Manipulation and possession, the manipulation usually being voice-produced and the possession transferred through the markings lining his arms. They are transferred to the one being possessed and their eyes change to a steely gray, just like his. Wesson Deveraux: Able to break things or shut people down within a certain radius of him. With inanimate objects, this means breaking them. With normal people, this means either locking them in place or knocking them unconscious. With mutants, he negates their power, and eventually they begin to respond like a normal human. This is limited to when he’s conscious. Wesson is a Southern charmer and gives off the air of being a gentleman, though his intentions aren’t as kind as they seem. While in The Facility, he was called “The Negator” and was studied as a secret weapon to depower Zachariah “Zack” Konopka: Siblings with Minerva, can communicate with technology, allowing him to hack things not by code but just by communication. Due to his connection with electronics, Zack has always been suspicious of the camp and has been keeping detailed tabs through the security cameras and computers, unbeknownst to the counselors. It is his disappearance that causes the others to start becoming suspicious, though he had told Risty where he recorded his surveillance notes (not Minerva, because she would tell) and they use them to escape. Zinnia Moreno: An elemental – controls plant life. When she is captured by The Facility, her DNA is tampered with and her Abnorm traits are intensified. She is moved to the Experimental camp, where Abnorms who were born with visible irregularities and ones who the Facility has tampered with reside. When her friends find her she has been mutated into a living plant creature. Zinnia is kind and always assumes the best of people. She is overall “good” and fears one day doing something that might make her feel as though she is bad. When she finds out about some her peers’ pasts, it takes her some time to get over it and judge them for the people they are now and not as who they were. Abnorm Classification System Batteries: Abnorms with abilities that involve the transfer or usage of energy, often physically manifesting as something else. Includes: Irina (her own energy into light), Laila (literal energy to energy), Lennox (electrical energy), Minerva (sonic energy) Brutes: Abnorms with abilities that focus mainly on physicality, enhancing their durability, endurance, or strength or providing them with a natural physical defense system (example in nature: a rhinoceros would be a brute because of its size and horn, but a porcupine also would be for its quills supplying a natural weapon) Includes: Isaac, Paul (though he could also be classified as a Thief), Langston, adaptor (natural defense is camouflage), metal girl The Enhanced: Abnorms with abilities that stem from normal human abilities but are heightened to extreme levels, usually abilities focused on the self. Interesting enough, this tends to be a predominately male category. Includes: Dorian (senses), Eric (foresight), Robert (healing), the encyclopedia Manipulators: Abnorms with abilities that tamper with the target’s brain, changing their perceptions, feelings, or actions. A relatively small category. Includes: Netta, Sebastian, Joshua (though he is also a Thief, as he can detect emotions) Naturals: Abnorms with abilities that manipulate or mimic natural occurrences in nature – not necessarily elemental Includes: Angel, Zinnia, Matthew, Zack (electrical signals), Annie (the healing process – it’s complicated to categorize, but healing is a natural process in humans and plants) Physicists: Abnorms with abilities that manipulate matter or space in some way, whether that is the movement of other objects or the adjustment of their own place in space Includes: Elena (she changes the form of the matter to store it), Gabe (he is the matter), Risty, Reid (creates matter into a force field) the teleporter (she is the matter) Thieves: Abnorms with abilities that allow them to take information and traits that do not belong to them. Often tends to be a category that crosses over with others (ex: Paul is a Brute-Thief) Includes: Hadley, Natalie, Kami, Marley, the locator Other: Wesson (he doesn’t fit into the other categories) 23 Campers: 11 females, 12 males Early captures: Langston (first), Elena, Gabe, Eric, Kami, Josh, Cara, Robert, Zack, Reid At the Facility: - Sebastian Johanna Encyclopedia Spanish girl Experimentals: - Wesson Locator Teleporter Metal girl The Eventual Bad Guys (followers of Sebastian) - Sebastian (duh) Wesson Elena Kami Natalie (though not necessarily by choice – she was coerced) Reid More are to come who have not yet been introduced (also maybe consider adding Eric, Dorian, or Lennox into this group) Many abilities begin to reveal themselves around the teenage years, usually coinciding with puberty. Most of the Abnorms were taken in when their powers manifested in their teens, with them now currently being in their late teens to twenties. Since their camp is obviously not sorted by type of ability, many have theorized that theirs was by age. A small group of the Abnorms (about 5-7) were all taken in in their very early teens, so they essentially grew up together. Even though a lot of time has passed and their closeness has faded, they still have some familial ties to one another. One member of this group was Robert, which is why so many people take his death so badly. Potential members of the first family: Robert, Laila, Angel, Minerva and Zack, Allison Note: Natalie was not a part of the first group but came a couple years after, so there are some bitter feelings toward her. Netta was later, and Matthew was after that, unaware of the fact that the other Abnorms avoided her because she pushed them away. Hadley was kept separately as an experiment. Other ideas: a hipster, a non-gender conforming Abnorm who falls in love with Gabe (even though he’s gay), an adapter (automatically adapts to blend in with any situation, such as looking like an elderly person in a nursing home or a woman in a hijab in India) whose base form is hideous, a communicator (can understand any language with minimal exposure by detecting patterns in speech – this includes animals who communicate) - - - - - Though there are many campers who share the “I just want to be normal” outlook on life, there are a few who really don’t care (Eric probably) and are proud of what they are (Eric: “I don’t give a shit about being normal. I’m a freakin’ psychic!”) As far as the campers can tell, the camp was actually a safe place. They were completely unaware of the negative agenda of their counselors and doctors, and some even had their parents donating money to the camp for keeping them there rather than just paying the base fee (though they were not allowed to keep frequent contact). The campers all know they had trackers implanted in them during their original medical screening upon arrival, which pretty much gives the camp their location at all times. Before Gabe is taken, he uses his ability to phase the trackers out painlessly. They all keep them on their persons while at the camp to make sure that nobody realizes that they’re gone, but once they’re out they attach them to random animals or slip them into a passerby’s pocket to throw off their hunters. When the remaining campers escape, they each take a small bag of provisions with them. This is not suspicious because the counselors were planning to move them into a more secure building and forced them to pack up their things anyway. Their level of suspicion was upped when they were being moved, so they decided to escape the night before the move. After the Abnorm revolt, Dorian contacts his estranged sister, Desma, to take him and Hadley in. Others also return home. Somebody goes through the effort of contacting Robert’s estranged family, where they meet Annie, who is also a healer – but of other people. She is quick to join their fight. (She has dark skin but light eyes and Robert’s hair color in tight ethnic curls.) - - - - At the Facility, they also encounter the encyclopedia, an awkward boy with an extreme memory with long red hair and a cynical personality, and a girl who only speaks Spanish, who Angel can communicate with. At the Experimental camp, they also meet a locator, who is able to locate anybody or anything anywhere in the world (she’s a Middle Eastern girl who wears a hijab, which is actually to cover the circles marring her bald head) and a teleporter, her best friend whose skin fades to darkness around her hands, feet, and spots all over her body. They travel around the world looking for other Abnorms who are in danger and either connect them with safety or allow them to join the resistance before Sebastian can get them – if this plotline is cut, have them be bad guys. Also with Experimentals is an awkward girl who can transform herself into pure metal. Though originally just her teeth remained metal in her human form, it is spreading like a disease in splotches across her face and down her body. When Sebastian has taken over, he wants Netta (because of course he does). She is obviously unwilling to go until he gets her cornered, when she makes a deal that he can possess her as long as he refuses to make contact with all of the Abnorms who have returned to safe homes (such as Dorian and Hadley, though she really is doing it for Hadley). Sebastian agrees and keeps her permanently possessed and, with the help of another person on his side, is able to pretty much brainwash her so that she obeys his orders even without the need for possession. Notes and Concepts The beginning of the story mainly follows Gwen, as her abilities emerge (since TDI was her season, she is the main focus of the story). Though her mother loves her very much, she is tricked by a medical professional to send her to Camp Wawanakwa, which she believes will teach her to harness her abilities. While the camp does do that and unites her with many other teens with a whole new series of abilities, there is also something a bit more sinister lurking in the background. Nobody believes for a moment that this is just a normal summer camp. Soon, campers start to disappear at night (starting with, of course, Ezekiel). Careful not to let the staff see them, the remaining campers gather to figure out how to break out of this camp before more of them can disappear. They find out that the camp counselors (Chris, Chef, Blaineley, Josh, the interns) are all agents of an organization that is keeping them trapped at the camp not to harness their powers, but to study them like experiments. When the campers attempt to make their escape, they are cornered by Chef, who actually chooses to help them and gives them the coordinates of The Facility (which Cody can locate from Courtney’s PDA’s GPS function) where their fellow campers have been taken. The other agents continue to chase the campers, who escape into the woods. They slowly make a trek to The Facility, which is hidden deep in the forest, careful to not get caught along the way. At one point, they are ambushed, and Duncan sacrifices himself so Gwen will not be taken away (which Courtney takes offense to). Along the journey, Heather reveals that she has been to The Facility before, explaining the torture and experiments she was put through. Eventually, they find The Facility and break in late at night (with Cody disabling the security devices, Heather and Geoff manipulating the guards until a more lethal camper can stun them. Courtney digs into the guards’ heads to figure out how to unlock the cells, which are personalized for each of the campers. They are able to retrieve some of their lost brethren, though Ezekiel’s acid has started to erode his skin, giving him a beastly appearance. They also find Alejandro and Sierra, who Heather remembers from her time at the Facility. Eventually, they realize that a few of the campers are missing, and Alejandro and Sierra reveal that they’ve been taken to Camp B, which contains mutants of even great power than they are. The campers are shocked to find out that there are others like them. Some of the campers go to break their comrades free, while a smaller squad goes into the nearby city to try to find a home base to stay at. DJ reveals that his mother lives in the city, but he was taken from her by what was supposedly “Child Services” because she was unfit to raise a child with his abilities. He sets out with some of the less conspicuous campers to the city, with Harold in the group keeping constant mental contact with Courtney since he copied her ability. o LIBERATORS: Gwen, Courtney, Katie and Sadie, Leshawna, Beth, Trent, Cody, Sierra, Alejandro, Heather o IN THE CITY: DJ, Geoff, Justin, Noah, Harold, Bridgette, Lindsay, Tyler, Ezekiel (put in a hoodie and carried around like a child) o TRAPPED AT THE CAMP: All the TDRI campers, Duncan, Eva, Izzy, and Owen (the more powerful or unwilling to cooperate captured campers) The Facility is located on an island nearby, which the campers travel to and spend about a day doing recon on (Courtney is able to mentally contact Duncan inside, who helps them stage the plan.) The camp is surrounded in a thick, seemingly impenetrable wall … which is not quite impenetrable when you have Katie and Sadie around. They get everyone into the camp and start a riot, telling the residents of the camp (who are both the old campers and thirteen completely new, sometimes much scarier faces). Using their abilities combined, they are able to break free of the camp and rendezvous with the campers in the city. In the city, the campers have taken shelter at DJ’s mother’s house, though with the unexpectedly increased numbers they move into an abandoned building. They believe that they’re safe until The Facility puts the city in lockdown. All along, Alejandro has been plotting a takeover. He has been tortured by The Facility all of his life, so he is not content with hiding out. He wants to fight back, wants to prove that mutants are superior. He recruits others who feel the same (Scott, Justin, Anne Maria, Lightning, Jo, Izzy, Harold, Eva, Ezekiel, and eventually Heather). When The Facility and the military invades the city, the campers come up with a plan to take over several locations in the city to shut down the military and tell the citizens that they are harmless. One of these locations is the main broadcast station in the town, which serves as a command center, led by Courtney, who is keeping in touch with the various squads mentally. When the other campers are fighting The Facility, Alejandro blindsides them by also fighting against the other mutants. He sends in some of his supporters, headed by Scott, to take control of the broadcast station. With Scott there, Courtney and the other campers that are stationed there are unable to use their powers. This leaves Trent completely vulnerable for the first time. Harold, copying Katie’s ability to teleport, transports Courtney, Trent (and whoever else was stationed at the broadcast center) to another area while the others take over the station for Alejandro. With Scott still there, Courtney is unable to signal the others for help and Trent is left dying. Eventually, Scott and Harold return to the broadcast tower, and Courtney is able to get a call out for Gwen to come immediately. Trent is too far gone to heal. Courtney keeps telling him to wait for Gwen, but he dies before she arrives. The story ends with Alejandro putting out a message that the mutants have taken control of the city, and that if there are any other mutants who are willing to join their cause they should come to them now or be captured. Some of the campers give in to their fear and join him. The remaining ones hide out with DJ’s mother, where they all find out about Trent’s death. Heather, who was left hurt in the fight, is found on the street by Alejandro, and she agrees to join him even though she doesn’t quite support his cause. The story starts back up again with Trent’s funeral, which is rather impersonal because they didn’t know much about him. There are significantly less campers at the funeral than there were at the end of the story, as many of them have joined up with Alejandro or the others have found a way to send them back home to their waiting families. Dakota has managed to get in contact with her father, who is secretly wiring her money for the good guys to use, though he can’t offer much more help because he needs to keep her out of the public eye. DJ’s mother is still supporting the good guys. Zoey takes on a disguise which she calls “Molly” to be able to do things without being caught by Alejandro or the military (Molly has the look of her prototype design with the glasses). Her main job as Molly was to be able to get a cell phone. She stays in contact with the campers who have returned home. This includes Katie and Sadie (maybe), who have been travelling around searching for other mutants who want to join the cause and are teleporting them back once Zoey says it’s safe. Meanwhile, Alejandro has completely taken over the city, with Heather as his queen. Eventually, Jo turns back to the good side when she sees Brick seemingly dead on the street. He turns out to live, and she returns with him to the good guys, accompanied by Eva (who she befriended). Despite seeing how negatively the group reacted to Jo leaving, Heather later betrays Alejandro for the campers, who are her true family. Courtney is bothered by how close Duncan and Gwen have gotten now that Trent is gone, and eventually Alejandro is able to coerce her over to his side because Scott’s abilities make it so that the voices in her head go away. She remains on their side for a while before switching back and taking a leadership role among the good guys, Gwen’s trust in her being the thing that makes the others willing to obey her. Mike is a character that was handled absolutely atrociously in canon, so this is my way of trying to recreate him in a less offensive way. For one thing, Mal does not and will not exist. Second, though Mike does feel like his disorder hinders him at some moments, he realizes that it is a part of him. He’s had his alters around longer than he’s had his powers, and he isn’t desperate to get rid of them – they each are a piece of him. o Also, Mike’s personalities each having a different ability is actually relevant to behaviors found in patients with DID. Sometimes, alters have different physical traits from one another, such as one needing glasses or having unique allergies that the others do not. Toronto, Ontario A small bell tinkled when somebody pushed open the door to the diner, and a young woman skittered inside and out of the rain. She closed her wet umbrella as she made her way to the bar, sitting on one of the round stools and shaking out her dampened curls. A middle-aged woman walked out from the kitchen and slid a menu to her. The girl opened it up and gave her waitress a bright smile. “Thanks! I love your outfit.” The woman looked down at her faded red apron and her too snug, bright yellow shirt, the name “Peg’s Diner” written across the breast right above an old ketchup stain. “Thank you.” She deadpanned, slipping back through the kitchen door. “You think she’s a drunk or something, Lottie?” Ruben, the heavyset night shift cook with a hairnet holding back his oily hair, asked. “She’s got to be something if she’s coming into a place like this at two in the morning.” The waitress responded, watching the girl through the serving window. Though the freezing rain had been pouring all night, the girl was wearing only a lime green crop top and shorts. Her frizzy hair was a fiery orange, falling in curls around her round face. Other than her umbrella, the only item she had with her was the beaten black backpack that was slung over her right shoulder. “Maybe she’s looking to rob us or something.” Ruben suggested. “You heard what happened to the gas station down the street? Some kid walks in right before closing with a gun and runs off with everything in the register.” Lottie shot a disbelieving look at the cook, gesturing towards the girl. “Look at her, Rube. She’s harmless. She’s probably coming back from a party and wanted to get something to eat.” The girl closed her menu and anxiously looked around the room. Lottie headed back through the swinging door, leaning on the counter in front of her. “You all set to order?” “Yeah, actually, I’d love to try a burger. Rare as you can serve it.” The waitress turned towards the counter. “You heard that, Rube?” “I'll have the cow still mooing for you, sweetheart!” Ruben called back, firing up the grill. Lottie filled a cup with ice water and placed it in front of the customer. The girl eagerly poured the entire contents of the glass into her mouth and then chomped down on the ice cubes. Lottie raised a brow. “What’s a girl like you doing in here all alone at this hour? What are you, fifteen?” “I don’t mind keeping to myself.” The redhead replied. “I can keep myself entertained all on my own.” “You a runaway or something?” The girl laughed as Lottie refilled her glass. “You could say that.” The waitress’s disinterested expression softened a bit. “I tried to run away from home a few times too when I was your age. I wanted to do so many things and thought my parents were just holding me down.” “Order up!” Ruben placed a plate with a burger and a handful of cold fries on the counter. “Oh, I don’t think anyone could hold me down.” When Lottie put down the plate, the redhead gave her a mischievous smirk before taking a massive bite of her burger. The waitress laughed as the slim girl devoured her meal, handing her another napkin after the first one had been destroyed by the grease dripping from the beef patty. The customer gave Lottie a grateful grin and accepted the napkin, the bell over the door tinkling as she dabbed at her chin. “Isadora Sinclair.” At the sound of the gruff voice, Lottie turned to find that the entrance to the diner was completely taken up by a hulking figure. The dark-skinned man’s muscles bulged from beneath his overcoat, and as he stepped further into the restaurant, Lottie could see that his brows were a thick, solid line above his cold eyes. The redheaded customer dropped the remains of her burger onto her plate, her eyes widening at the sight of the man, and the waitress’s protective instincts kicked in. “Can I help you, sir?” Lottie asked, lifting the partition so she could slip out from behind the counter. “I’m here for her.” The huge man started to head for the girl, but the waitress slid between them. “Nuh-uh, I don’t think so.” The middle-aged woman put her hands on her thick hips. “I don’t know what you want with her, but she’s going to finish her meal in peace.” “You don’t know what you’re gettin’ into, woman.” The dark-skinned man took another step towards her, but Lottie stood her ground. The intruder snorted when she put her arms out to defend her customer. “She doesn’t need your help. She can protect herself.” Lottie held her chin high. “I’m not moving.” “Oh, really?” The man reached into the pocket of his jacket, and Lottie was abruptly pushed to the side. The redheaded girl, Isadora the man had called her, shoved the waitress into a booth and hopped over the counter. The giant man aimed a handgun at her before Lottie could even shield her eyes. Isadora, however, was not going down without a fight. She reached up and grabbed onto two lowhanging lights dangling over her head. From where she sat, Lottie could swear she saw a faint glow around the redhead’s hands before both light bulbs went out. Isadora then flung her hands in the direction of the man, and two green, radiating balls of light shot towards him, knocking the giant asid0e. “What the hell?!” Ruben screamed from the kitchen, cowering under a table as Isadora pushed through the swinging door. She placed one hand on the stove and another on the refrigerator. “He’s not going to stay down for long, but he won’t hurt you if I get out of here!” The redhead shouted, the refrigerator letting out a defeated whir as it shut down. “Are you crazy?! He’s got a gun!” Ruben held up a frying pan to shield his face. “And what kind of freak are you?!” “I already said I’m a runaway, now is there a back exit?!” Suddenly, the dark-skinned man charged into the kitchen. Isadora pulled her umbrella from the open pocket of her backpack and clamped both of her hands around its handle. A faint green aura surrounded the umbrella and she chucked it at the intruder. He tried to dodge it, but the projectile caught him on the shoulder and exploded upon impact. “Holy shit!” Ruben hollered, rolling away from the explosion. He looked up at the girl, whose expression was frantic. Though he was scared out of his mind, the cook pointed towards the back room. “There’s an exit through there.” “Thank you!” Isadora rushed for the door, grabbing a pile of plates from a shelf on her way out. The muscular man grunted as he climbed to his feet, bolting after her into the rain. “You can’t run, Izzy!” He spotted the runaway halfway down the street, her conspicuous clothing making her unable to hide even with the heavy rain. As he sprinted after her, Izzy grabbed onto a parking meter with one hand and then tossed a glowing plate like a Frisbee at her pursuer. He avoided the projectile, though she touched a few more objects and then sent more right after it. Though they succeeded in distracting him, the shots were unable to stop him from spotting a blur of green and orange slip into an alley. When he caught up to her, she was grappling her way up a fire escape. “Just give up!” “You’ll never get me alive!” Izzy exclaimed as she climbed onto the roof of the building. He trailed right after her, drawing his gun. “You can’t catch me, Hatchet!” He shot at her, but his aim was off and she was able to dodge it. When she ran out of roof, the manic redhead leapt over the gap between the buildings. She barely made it and fell to her knees, the plates she had collected shattering around her as she rolled across the roof. Hatchet bounded after her, holding his weapon in front of him as he approached where she had landed. “You can’t run, Izzy.” Hatchet said. “Come with me. It’s just a tranquilizer, I’m not gonna hurt you.” A low chuckle emitted from the runaway’s throat. She sat up slowly, and when she pushed her damp red mane back, Hatchet saw that something was amiss. Even though her landing had cut open her cheek, her eyes were casually half-lidded and a too large smile was spread across her lips. “Who’s Izzy?” She said in a sing-song. “There’s no Izzy here.” Her giggling grew louder as the darkskinned man’s finger twitched on the trigger. “Well, who are you now?” Hatchet spat. “Kaleidoscope? Explosivo?” “That’s not me either.” The curly-haired girl’s smile only grew as she sat up, resting on her knees. “I’m Esquire.” Before Hatchet could react, she swiftly reached her arm out to grasp a radio antenna protruding from the roof. Her hand emitted a familiar green light, throwing sparks of pure energy off of the antenna. Hatchet shot a tranquilizer dart, and Izzy got to her feet as it embedded itself into her shoulder. The redhead stumbled towards the edge of the building, climbing her way up onto the ledge. “Izzy, don’t!” Hatchet exclaimed. “I already told you, I’m not Izzy … but you’ll still never get me alive.” She broke into a blissed out grin as she spread her arms out at her sides and threw herself off the roof. Hatchet reached out for her wrist, but she slipped right through his fingers. He stared over the edge as Izzy hurtled to her death, only to be blinded by a burst of green right before she hit the ground. The redhead darted into the air above Hatchet’s head, drifting back down on the roof across from him. “See, Hatchet? I’m a master of escape!” She taunted from across the gap between the buildings. Hatchet was aiming another shot at her when she began to stumble a bit, clutching at the dart that was stuck in her shoulder. Her green eyes rolled back and her jaw went slack, her body collapsing off of the building. She plummeted towards the pavement again, though this time she landed safely in an open dumpster. Hatchet holstered his gun and pulled a walkie-talkie from the pocket of his overcoat. “This is Hatchet. I’ve found the runaway and will be returning immediately.” - Note: Izzy was under Chef’s watch when she ran away and is a regular escapee, so even though he caught her, he was still punished by being demoted to working at the camp.
