More specifically … Class List (peer storytelling response sheet) Assessing Myself As A … Leader Imagine the following hypothetical scenario. During a class excursion, you and your 29 classmates somehow become stranded on a deserted tropical island. Resources are scarce. There are no functional communication devices. A minimal amount of food and water. Limited shelter from the weather. In other words, a 2022 version of the television show Gilligan’s Island. Tension and panic are running high. Collectively, your group is headed toward complete chaos. 1. Based on the responses recorded on your class list (peer storytelling response sheet), identify 2 students you believe would be the strongest candidates for leadership. Support your selections. Student #1: Explanation Yatakulan Leading a fundraiser is a great asset when leading a large group of people. Having limited access to necessities, Yatakulan has experience with monitoring food distribution at his fundraiser. He made sure that the food he had is enough for the people attending. Moving on, Yatakulan also showed excellent leadership skills by also being the public speaker at the fundraiser. This means he would be the perfect individual to communicate with our class and deliver the needed steps for survival. Student #2: Salma Explanation As tension rises, the class needs a leader to encourage our class to attain composure and calmness. This is why Salma is the perfect fit for this role. While doing charity work, Salma encouraged her teammates to work harder and keep pushing. She was responsible for maintaining the emotional state of her group which therefore lead her to achieve a successful charity. Thus, having a leader like Salma will significantly reduce the tension and improve the emotional state of mind in the class. 2. Strength #1 Dependability Explanation Throughout my life, I have been taught to be dependable by my family members. I was taught that being dependable is the best asset for others to gain my trust. Therefore, I studied and learned my parent's advice and started becoming more and more dependable. People started gaining my trust and telling me their secrets and life problems. I had a responsibility to listen to their concerns and keep them with me forever. For instance, when I first came to Canada in grade 6, I made friends and started putting together a group that would suit me best. Since then, my and I friends share our thoughts and problems in able to maintain a healthy friendship. Throughout this friendship, I am the one dependent on solving the friendship's problems and arguments. I am also trusted by all friend groups to keep secrets and make good promises. I've made many promises and fulfilled them such as, I made a promise to my friend Yosif that I would buy him dinner. Also, my family depends on me to complete chores and cook dinner for my sister. Thus, due to my experiences, I can confidently say that dependability is one of my strongest traits. Strength #2 Creativity Explanation Being creative is a trait I've been blessed with since a youngster. My uncle played a big part in my creativity. He was an artist and would take me with him to his studio to watch him create art. From him, I learned how to express my ideas in a creative matter. Since then, I developed my own unique art and started expressing my creativity through art. I began to create abstract paintings as a way to express my thoughts in a creative way. My uncle was impressed by my art and hung one of my art pieces at one of his exhibitions. The attendees were also thrilled and impressed by my art and I received a big applause for my creative work. Aside from art, I always think outside of the box while brainstorming ideas. For example, I am expected to think of creative ideas for my architectural university portfolio. Therefore, for one of my projects, I thought about creating an Islamic center that would be physically open from every direction to accept and welcome all kinds of people despite, their color, race, and religion. In conclusion, my sense of creativity is a great trait and is inspired by my art pieces and architectural projects. 3. When you reflect on the sheet titled “Assessing Myself As A … Leader”, which 2 qualities do you consider your weakest traits. Support your selections. Weakness #1 Communicate well with others Explanation Being an introvert makes it extremely difficult to communicate with others. Personally, I am more comfortable working independently and interacting with those I already have connections with. I’m not an effective speaker, however, I've been working to improve this aspect. During my business leadership course, I was assigned to publicly speak about a personal story. As I anticipated, I was nervous and therefore performed poorly on the assignment. The grade affected my overall course mark and that's when I realized a change needed to be made; I needed a second chance. Surprisingly enough, I did get the chance to perform a similar public speaking task. This time, I was assigned to make a role play and present it to the class. I spent an excessive amount of time practicing and watching videos to improve my communication skills. Thankfully enough, my hard work paid off. I received an extremely high mark and was very proud of myself. Although my communication skills aren't my best traits, I still try to improve them and learn to fix them. Weakness #2 Cooperation Explanation Cooperation is my weakest trait. One of the mistakes that I regret the most is limiting myself to only cooperating with people I know well. This doesn't only affect me during school, but it also affects me in future workplaces. For instance, one time in my grade 7 class I was put in a group with random classmates I didn't know. My brain was locked and I was moody and had a negative attitude. I refused to cooperate and help my group mates. Consequently, I was given an extremely bad grade and my teacher called my parents and scheduled a meeting with them. During the meeting, the teacher kept explaining how it's unacceptable to have bad cooperation skills. The teacher insisted on putting me with random classmates again to improve. In the beginning, I thought my teacher was bluffing. But now that I think about it, he's absolutely correct. Wherever I decide to work in the future, cooperation skills are a must in able to succeed in my position. I realize that I need to take action now rather than later. I need to take advantage of every group assignment to improve my cooperation skills. Learning from past experiences, my drive to cooperate with classmates has grown and will continue to grow for the years to come. 3
