• Physical and chemical properties can be used to identify and classify substances.
• There are over 100 known elements. These elements are organised on the periodic table based on similarities in their
characteristic properties.
• Difference between elements and compounds in terms of atoms and molecules.
• Groups of elements (alkali, alkaline, transition metal, halogen, noble gas ) and how their properties differ as per their
positioning in the periodic table.

Class discussion on the properties of different groups of elements and how they all have same physical properties because of their atomic
number. Students will be shown a periodic table and emphasis will be given on how the elements are arranged in periods and families
according to their characteristic physical properties.

Students will be divided in groups and will be given the names of different groups of elements. Students will write the physical and
chemical properties of the given groups of elements and discuss their findings with class. They will also give justification and compare
the difference between the properties of the elements and why they are placed in given period in the periodic table.
