Cruz, Katherynn F. BSMT MT1-01 SEARCH THE FOLLOWING INVENTIONS & INNOVATION IN THE FIELD OF MEDICAL TECHNOLOGY 1. Edward Jenner contributed to immunology by discovering vaccines. He is the first person who created the first successful vaccine which is the smallpox vaccine. 2. Marie François Xavier Bichat contributed to histology by introducing 21 tissues as the basic elements of organs. 3. Agostino Bassi is an Italian entomologist. Because of his research and study about muscardine, it was discovered that the diseases affecting living organisms are caused by microorganisms. He prescribed some methods for the prevention and elimination of muscardine. 4. Louis Pasteur successfully developed a vaccine which is immunity to rabies. He also discovered Pasteurization which is the process that he invented which helps destroy the pathogenic microorganisms that could affect the shelf life of foods and beverages. 5. Gregor Mendel is known as The Father of Modern Genetics. Because of his study on pea plants, he discovered the fundamental laws of inheritance. Because of his research and study, it was discovered how traits are passed from parents to offspring. 6. John lister invented Antisepsis which is the method of using chemicals that helps destroy the germs that cause infections during surgery. In this way of using Antiseptic, infection in the wound is prevented. Because of this discovery of Joseph Lister, surgery became safer and helped save more lives. 7. Robert Koch is one of the founders of microbiology. He discovered the bacteria that causes cholera and tuberculosis. Throughout the years Robert Koch continued to explore different diseases, both from animals and humans, by going on an expedition in different places and studying the diseases common in that area. 8. Elie Metchnikoff discovered phagocytosis. Phagocytosis is the process by which certain living cells called phagocytes ingest or engulf other cells or particles which combats infection. 9. Ernst Von Bergmann introduced the sterilization of surgical materials using heat from the steam. 10. Karl Landsteiner classified the bloods into groups. Because of his discovery of blood groups namely Type A, AB, B, and O, blood transfusion became much safer. 11. Von Wassermann is best known for developing the Wassermann test. The Wassermann test helps to identify if a patient is positive of syphilis or not. This test kit may not be as good as modern test kits but it surely contributed to the development of modern test kits for infectious diseases these days. 12. Howard Ricketts discovered rickettsiae which is responsible for lethal human diseases such as typhus and Rocky Mountain spotted fever. Rickettsiae is an organism that causes the transmission of Rocky Mountain spotted fever. It is transmitted through tick bites. 13. Hans Fischer is an organic chemist. His discovery helped us to understand the importance of hemoglobin in transporting oxygen. Hans Fischer is also known for synthesizing porphyrins which are important when it comes to the structure of hemoglobin. His discoveries led to advancements in the fields of biochemistry and medicine. 14. Jonas Salk successfully developed a poliomyelitis vaccine. It is a vaccine for Polio which is a disease that affects the nervous system. His vaccine helped lessen the number of polio cases in the whole world. 15. James Westgard - introduced the westgard rules for quality control in the clinical laboratory. This rule ensures the accuracy of the laboratory test results. 16. Baruch Samuel Blumberg discovered the Hepatitis B virus. Because of his discovery, he studied the virus and developed a successful vaccine for the Hepatitis B virus. 17. Kary Mullis - developed the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) wherein a small amount of DNA can be copied in large quantities. PCR is a big help in medical research and forensic science. 18. Andre Van Steirteghem - introduced the infertility treatment called intracytoplasmic sperm injection (IVF) wherein a sperm is injected into an egg to make an embryo. 19. James Thomson is known for his stem cell research. He is the first one who successfully made the first human stem cell line.
