1. How has Banquo been affected by the prophecies of the three witches? What is
Macbeth’s response to Banquo’s mention of this, and why does he respond this
way?
Banquo is intrigued by the prophecies but becomes suspicious. Macbeth responds
with lies and eventually has Banquo killed because he's afraid of losing power.
2. What does Lady Macbeth do to aid in the assassination plot? Why is she unable
to carry out the action herself, and what do you think that says about her
character?
Lady Macbeth plans King Duncan's murder and convinces Macbeth to do it
because she's not physically capable. She's power-hungry and persuasive but
later feels guilty.
3. What is Macbeth’s reaction to murdering King Duncan? Why do you think all of
this happens offstage?
Macbeth feels guilty and anxious after killing King Duncan. The murder is
offstage to create suspense and explore Macbeth's inner struggle while following
the norms of Shakespeare's time.
4. What does the image of blood symbolize in the scenes following the murder? Why
do you think this image is repeated so many times in the play?
In "Macbeth," blood means guilt, violence, ambition, and fate. It's repeated to
emphasize these ideas, show the characters' emotions, predict events, and make
the audience feel more.
5. What is Macbeth’s explanation for the killing of the guards? How do the others
react to this?
Macbeth says he killed the guards because he was upset about Duncan's death.
Others are sad.
Preparing for Next Week :
Read If and Invictus
Consider the meaning behind these poems. Also, consider WHY these poems
were written. How do they connect to one another? Both “If” and “Invictus” are
about staying strong when life gets tough. "If" advises on how to do this, while
"Invictus" declares a refusal to give in to difficulties.
