Objectives:
A. Explain the national military aircraft markings of Australia, New
Zealand, USA, Britain, Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia

Prior Knowledge Check:
Everyone has done ASB-01-06 and has passed the ASB syllabus

Reason for Learning/Motivation:
Aviation Recognition is a key component in the AAFC and is essential to a
cadets skills and is also one of the main competitions at 3 Wings, Wing
Competitions.
Aviation Recognition is also applicable to Air Traffic Controllers and Pilots
both military and civilian alike.

Recap: What are National Markings AKA Roundels
A roundel is a circular disc used as a symbol. The term is used in heraldry,
but also commonly used to refer to a type of national insignia used on
military aircraft, generally circular in shape and usually comprising concentric
rings of different colours.
Roundels may also utilise a national symbol such as Australia utilising the
Kangaroo or the Luftwaffe using the Balkenkreuz.
RAAF/RAN/AA National markings
The ADF roundel consists two parts:

An Air Force Blue (AFB) ring.
A red kangaroo inside of the AFB ring.
Some countries also have Low Visibility roundels and the RAAF Low-Vis
roundel is the same as the standard roundel but is gray. The RAN and the AA

use either the roundel or a red/black kangaroo. These markings always have
the kangaroo's nose pointed towards the front of the aircraft.
RNZAF/RNZN National Markings
The RNZAF and RNZN use a roundel that is similar to Australia’s but contains
a red kiwi in place of the kangaroo.
The RNZAF/RNZN also uses a gray Low-Vis roundel.
The beak of the kiwi always faces the nose of the aircraft.
USAF/USN/USMC/US Army National markings
The US Military uses a universal marking across all 4 services. This roundel
consists of:

A white star in an AFB circle.

A horizontal red line going through each box.
Two rectangular boxes outlined in AFB on each side of the circle and
star.
The US Military also has a Low-Vis roundel in all gray.
RAF/RN/British Army National markings
The British Military roundel is the base for almost all commonwealth
countries and consists of a red dot surrounded by a blue circle.
The British Military also utilises a Low-Vis roundel although it is only found on
their F-35 stealth aircraft.
RSAF National Markings
The RSAF (Royal Singapore Air Force) roundel consists of two parts:

A red lion.
A red circle around the lion.
The RSAF also has an all gray Low-Vis roundel.
The nose of the lion always faces the nose of the aircraft.
RMAF National Markings
The RMAF (Royal Malaysian Air Force) Roundel consists of 2 parts:

A yellow 14 point star in a dark blue circle.

The RMAF does not utilise a Low-Vis roundel
TNIAU National Markings
The TNIAU (Indonesian Air Force) utilises a simple roundel that consists of a
simple red pentagon.
The TNIAU does not utilise a Low-Vis roundel.
