Name: Josh Hoover Rhetorical Purpose: In this speech I will persuade my audience to take action to support The Nevada Diabetes Association, a local non-profit organization. Thesis: Individuals all across our community are affected by diabetes, and with the help of your donations, the Nevada Diabetes Association can help provide resources and support to those in need. A Donation for Diabetes Introduction I. Picture this – one morning you wake up and the simple task of eating your breakfast becomes a difficult and complicated calculation. That is the unfortunate reality that millions of people across the globe face due to diabetes. II. As someone who lives with a Type-1 Diabetic, I have witnessed the effort that it takes every day, just to stay alive. III. I’m sure everyone here knows someone personally who has been affected by diabetes. IV. Individuals all across our community are affected by diabetes, and with the help of your donations, the Nevada Diabetes Association can help provide resources and support to those in need. V. To further understand the impact that the Nevada Diabetes Association (NDA) has on our local community, we must talk about what diabetes is, and why it is an issue, how the NDA helps diabetics in the area, and why they need your support. Transition: To begin, let’s start by understanding what diabetes is. Body I. What diabetes is and why it is an issue. A. The two different variations of diabetes include Type-1 and Type-2 diabetes. 1. Type-1 is characterized as insulin dependent and is an autoimmune disease in which the immune system attacks the pancreas, causing the body to not produce insulin. This is usually found in children and young adults. 2. Type-2 is often found in adults in which your body does not use the insulin properly. In most cases, people with Type-2 diabetes are classifies as “overweight”. 3. All patients of diabetes require meticulous attention to their diet, blood glucose level, and physical activity. This is becoming an increasing problem in our community 4. *Show graph from academic source* a) B. Diabetes is an expensive disease to control. 1. In most Type-1 cases, diabetes is a life-long battle, which means a life-long financial burden for families and individuals. 2. In 2010, global health expenditure attributable to diabetes was estimated to be $376 billion, or 12% of all global health expenditure. a) C. Diabetes is an economic/political issue 1. A 2023 bill is being negotiated that would extend price caps to all Nevadans, even those who don’t have Medicare. – Nevada Current Article 2. The Nevada Diabetes Association is a strong advocate for this bill. This would reduce the cost of certain drugs by 20 – 60%. 3. Paraphrase from Bengt Jonnson article: Studies have shown that areas that are less developed are more prone to the risk of Type-2 diabetes. In areas that are more developed, because of the access to diabetes education and resources, they are less at risk of Type-2 diabetes. Transition: Now that we understand the intricacies of diabetes, lets now talk about how the NDA helps our community. II. What the Nevada Diabetes Association does to help diabetics in the area. A. NDA holds camps in the Spring, Summer, and Fall to help young diabetics connect with others who struggle with the same issues. 1. *Quote from roommate who attended these camps growing up and is a camp mentor in the Summer* 2. These camps are a week long (two of them being in Lake Tahoe) and provide kids with diabetes education and access to healthcare professionals 24/7. B. The NDA website hosts copious amounts of information for diabetics and their families. 1. This includes information about what diabetes is, how to maintain it, and FAQs. 2. A cookbook that supplies 25 recipes that are low carb and are quick and easy to make. One of which I made this past week for my roommate. C. The NDA holds several events in the community to help raise money. 1. Battle of The Rattle is a 5k race that goes up Rattlesnake Mountain in Reno. The race for this year is held on September 16. 2. Driving Fore Diabetes is an 18-hole golf tournament that is held at Toiyabe Golf Course. The golf tournament this year is held on August 27. Transition: There’s no doubt that the Nevada Diabetes Association does a lot for diabetics in the local area. But their efforts are funded entirely by outsourced events and charitable donations. III. Why you should donate to the NDA. A. The more money donated to the NDA, the less money is out of the pocket of diabetic patients. 1. The NDA has saved the community over $11.5 million in emergency medical supplies. 2. The NDA also provides 100 days of diabetes programming and education per year 3. Without the support of the community through donations, the NDA will not have the funds to hold events and prevent future awareness/preventative measures. B. How you can donate and support. 1. There are several ways to donate to the National Diabetes Association. In fact, there is a tab on their website that allows you donate in increments of $10 or choose your own value. 2. Sarah Gleich quote, "Reno has a great sense of community and willingness to give back. In the nonprofit sector, you need and rely on a community that wants to do better for their community members, and Reno has that.” 3. They give the option to subscribe monthly, quarterly, or annually with your custom donation amount. 4. NDA can also be found on Facebook and Twitter @NVDiabetes. This is where you can keep track of all the information and events that are upcoming, along with sharing their message! Conclusion I. As I draw near the end of this presentation, let’s take a moment to reflect on everything I just talked about. II. I first discussed the different types of diabetes and why it is a pertinent issue in the world, then I dove into the Nevada Diabetes Association and how they help the local community, and finally, I implore you once again to donate. III. Individuals all across our community are affected by diabetes, and with the help of your donations, the Nevada Diabetes Association can help provide resources and support to those in need. IV. With each donation, we can support those who face the battle of diabetes every single day. V. By helping the Nevada Diabetes Association, you can ease the burden of diabetes in the community. And just like NDA says, until there’s a cure, we are here to help! Works Cited 1. Nevada Diabetes Association. Nevada Diabetes Association and California Diabetes Association.
