Using the different periods and art movements in Western Europe, describe (or draw) how you will execute and create the artwork based on the period you chose. The Renaissance was a fervent period of European cultural, artistic, political and economic “rebirth” following the middle Ages. Generally described as taking place from the 14th century to the 17th century, the Renaissance promoted the rediscovery of classical philosophy, literature and art. During the Renaissance, Europeans saw love and marriage as two important, but very different, parts of life. Poets describe love as an overpowering force, both spiritual and sexual. For most people, however, marriage was a more practical matter. Compare and Contrast Greek and Romance artworks. Answer: Classical Art Greeks were driven by the notion of perfection and was reflected in the way the constructed sculptures. Sculptures portray an idealized perfection and were greatly concerned with poise and proportions. Romans were interested in conveying the ideal realism through natural looking portraitures. 2. Discuss how Mannerism art became an offshoot of works from the Renaissance. Answer: Mannerism is a term used by art historians to describe artists working in the manner of from the hand (“MANO”) Michelangelo. It exaggerates heroic proportion (10 to 20 heads high), tortured gestured, and exaggerated color palates. It stems from Mike’s work during the high renaissance, hence the off shoot. It is not a term the artist would have used to describe their own work. It spread from Italy to Spain where one of the most original practitioners was EI Greco. 3. Explain why Neoclassicism served as a response or reaction to the Baroque Period. Answer: This movement manifested in its details as a reaction against the Rococo style of naturalistic ornament, and in its architectural formulas as an outgrowth of some classicizing features of Late Baroque. In its purest form, Neoclassicism is a style principally derived from the architecture of Classical Greece and Rome.
