RESUME AND COVER LETTER CHECKLIST
Most of you probably have a working resume. If you don’t, that’s fine. If you do,
please note that you just can’t submit it as is. This is a specific assignment, and you
need to do it according to directions. You can do what you wish with your own
resume, but I hope this assignment will help you to make it better.
Whether you are looking for an internship or a full-time job, you need a solid
resume, but you don’t want to use the same resume for both. Internship resumes
prioritize different information than job resumes do. This assignment is for an
internship, as per the slide. If you decide to choose one of the other options, please
send me an email or tell me in class.
INTERNSHIP: Prioritizes GPA and projects. Education is listed first. Include class
projects relevant to the job you are seeking.
Education is listed from most current going back. If you had some successful HS
projects, include them. If not, don’t worry. You do NOT have to list your HS
graduation information.
Job experience is also listed from most current going back. You want to list ALL
of your jobs here, even if they seem irrelevant. Lots of skills are transferable.
Awards and organizations go last. Include hobbies only if they are relevant to the
job you’re seeking. Random hobbies are generally not what an employer wants to
see on a resume. Save it for the interview.
JOB: Prioritizes work experience. Doesn’t care about your GPA. Only include
class projects if they are relevant for the post you seek.
RESUME:
ONE PAGE only. The average HR department looks at a resume for less than 30
seconds, and that’s AFTER it passes the keyword check..
CLEAR AND CONCISE
Say what you did, not what your duties were. For instance: Trained new
employees; Filed paperwork; Managed a team, and so forth Use ACTION verbs.
Don’t write complete sentences or full paragraphs. Nobody will read them.
Clean, easy to read font. No little symbols and icons.
White paper, black ink. You might get away with using one color, such as a dark
blue or green. Nothing loud or garish.
Name should be in larger font, but NOT TOO
LARGE like this is.
COVER LETTER:
One page, 3 paragraphs. Again, time is limited. You can go into details when you
get the interview.
Follow the guidelines on the Power Point.
Don’t repeat the info in your resume.
E-signature is fine for this assignment.
Single space it.
