“In a multilingual
society, how do
people choose
language in
different
situations?”
SOCIOLINGUIS
•TIC
Is the study of the sociological aspects of
language.
• It examines how different social factors
(ethnicity, gender, class, occupation,
education, and geographical location) can
influence language use and maintain social
roles within a community.
• According to Spolsky (2004), language choice
is heavily dependent on its sociolinguistic
contexts (location, participants involved, and
the topic at hand.
Hi!
Hi!
WHAT IS
SOCIOLINGUISTIC
USED FOR?
¡Hola!
• It can help us understand why we speak different
languages in various social contexts.
• It can also help us uncover the social relationships in a
community.
• Example: The way we speak to our friends or other
people is not the same way we speak with our parents.

MULTILINGUALISM IN…

EDUCATION
SOCIETY
We can certainly see the bidirectionality
between language and education. It is
the result of the combination of the
trend towards teaching more languages
at school and multilingualism in society.
Is also common because of political,
historical, economic and social factors.
