CREATIVE WRITING Two Types of Writing 1. Technical Writing Straightforward and does not require wordiness or imaginative expression. Instruction, Explanation, and Direction 2. Creative Writing (Imaginative Writing) Style of writing that goes beyond the conventions or traditions of technical literature. Writer express the feelings and ideas rather than be guided with the restrictive demands of factual and logical progression expository writing. E.g.: Fiction, Poetry, and Non- Fiction Literary Devices in Creative Writing 1. Imagery Descriptive language it functions as a way for the readers to better imagine the literature. Helps the reader better imagine the world. The writer is trying to create by appealing to the five senses (taste, sight, smell, hearing, and vision. 2. Diction Writer’s style of writing It’s the writer’s choice of words which reflects his or her style of expression. Figure of Speech Which adds color to our text by definiting from the literal meaning of the words being used. 1. Simile Indirect comparison; uses as-as or like 2. Metaphor Direct comparison 3. Hyperbole Exaggeration: making things beyond reality. 4. Personification Animation; non human things are given human attitudes. 5. Apostrophe A direct address; calling someone or something E.g. Oh dear fate, why did you bring me this much pain? 6. Oxymoron Placing side-by-side two contradicting words E.g. The dress the First lady is wearing is pretty ugly Mr. Villarreal’s son was found missing after the party 7. Paradox Self-contradicting statement but makes sense E.g. We must fall in order to rise. To live is to die. 8. Synecdoche Using a part of something to represent the whole. E.g. Lloyd rode on a bus since his wheels is under repair. (Wheels-Vehicle) Monica was in the forest when she met a gray beard. (Gray beard-Old man) 9. Metonymy Replacing the name of a thing with the name of something else which it is closely associated with. E.g. The crown ordered the investigation of the princess death. (Crown-King or Queen) Last year, thousands of boots marched to Mindanao to resolve conflicts. (Boots-Soldiers) 10. Chiasmus Putting two or more clauses that are balanced against each other by the reversal of their structures in order to produce an artistic effect. 11. Alliteration Repetition of consonant sound E.g. Betty Botter bought some butter. 12. Assonance Repetition of a vowel sound in several words E.g. An ant ate an apple 13. Onomatopoeia Words that imitate sound E.g. My heart seemed to beat with the ticktock of the clock. 14. Rhyme Repeating similar sounding words E.g. Black Sheep Song
