Lab Equipment
Beaker – hold solids or
liquids that will not release
gases when reacted or
unlikely to splatter if
stirred or heated.
Gas Collecting Bottle – we use gas
collecting bottles when large volumes
of gases are produced, and must be
collected by the displacement of
water.
Test Tubes Rack - to hold upright
multiple test tubes at the same time.
Funnel - filtering, filling,
decanting or transferring
liquids or powders from one
vessel to another.
Erlenmeyer Flask – hold
solids or liquids that may
release gases during a
reaction or that are likely to
splatter if stirred or heated.
Test Tubes - convenient containers
for heating small amounts of liquids
or solids with a Bunsen burner or
alcohol burner.
Rubber Stoppers - to seal bottles,
tubes and many other containers.
Medicine Dropper - measuring and
transferring liquids in small amounts.
Florence Flask – rarely used in
first year chemistry, it is used
for the mixing of chemicals.
Narrow neck prevents splash
exposure.
Test Tubes Holder - used for holding a
test tube in place when the tube is
hot or should not be touched.
Spot Plates - to facilitate
the testing of multiple
samples.
Litmus Paper - to assess whether a
solution is acidic or basic.
blue(acid) & red(basic)
Graduated Cylinder – is used
to measure volumes of
liquids.
Test Tubes Brushes - cleaning test
tubes and other lab ware including
tubing.
Watch Glass - to evaporate
liquids and cover beakers
during sample preparation.
Forceps - the "tweezers" in an organic
chem lab.
Glass Stirring Rod - mixing liquids, or
solids and liquids.
Spatula - mixing, scraping,
and other tasks related to
transferring materials and
samples from one place to
another.
Mohr Pipette - to measure
the volume of the liquid
dispensed.
Beaker Tongs - to safely
handle hot beakers.
Crucible - used to contain
chemical compounds when
heating them to very high
temperatures.
Clay Triangle - a wire and
ceramic triangle used to
support a crucible while it is
heated over a Bunsen
burner.
Triangular File - useful
for metal filing or glass
cutting
Ringstand - holding beakers,
flasks, cones, funnels, and
more.
Double Buret Clamp - doing
titration & other simple
science experiments.
Wire Gauze - to support the
beakers, flasks, or other
glassware during heating.
Wash Bottle - to wash or
rinse various pieces of
glassware or plasticware in
the laboratory
Bunsen Burner - to heat
substances, to combust
substances, and to sterilize
objects on high heat.
Crucible Tongs - to lift a hot
crucible from a furnace or
for other items which
cannot be handled with
bare hands.
Iron Rings - supporting
apparatus above the work
surface
Pressed Fiber Pad - it provides a
surface for hot beakers so that
the beaker does not come in
contact with a cold countertop
and shatter.
Weighting Boat - an open
container, often disposable,
used for weighing samples.
Evaporating Dish - separate
liquids and solids from a
solution by allowing the
water to evaporate off into
the air.
Glass Plate - used as a cover
for Flasks, Cylinders or
Beakers.
Utility Clamp - to hold round
laboratory glassware, such
as beakers, and flasks, etc.
Strikers - to start Bunsen
burners.
