ROUTE RUNNING TECHNIQUE Wide Receiver Route Running •Run crisp routes. The receivers must drive straight up the field then break into their assigned routes. This will disguise which way the route pattern is going. Many times with wide receiver route running you will see the kids leaning to the way they are going to cut (before their break). •The wide receiver must run his route straight up the field. The receiver cannot belly his route when he breaks into his pattern. Bellying or leaning to the cut side will give the pattern away. Running straight will drive the defender up the field, making him defend the entire field. The defender will not know when or where you are going to break. •Full speed route running! Routes must be ran at full speed. Full speed route running will help drive the defender up the field. Even if the kid knows he isn’t getting the ball thrown to him he needs to run his route hard. •This is basic route running technique vs. an off or bail defender. BEATING PRESS COVERAGE LINE RELEASES Single Move A single move is when the receiver will come to balance, stick their foot giving a head nod in one direction before bursting the other direction to take their release. If the defender is playing with inside leverage, step to his leverage, then burst back away from the leverage. Chop: If the defender attempts to put their hands on the receiver below our elbow, the receiver will chop down fully extending his arm to remove the defender's hand. Wipe: If the defender attempts to put their hands on the receiver above the elbow, he will raise his arm and wipe their hand off. Speed Release A speed release is when the receiver will burst up-field immediately after coming to balance and attempt to win with speed. If you have a better athlete, you can just have the receiver release outside (vs. inside leverage defender) or release inside (vs. outside leverage defender) dipping the shoulder near the pressed defender and releasing upfield. WIDE RECEIVER STANCE Stance •The inside foot should be up, and the front toe should be pointed straight ahead. •The receiver’s feet should be shoulder-width apart, so he or she is balanced. •Feet should be staggered enough to prevent a drop-step (picking up back foot before you start). •Weight should be concentrated on the front foot to prevent a false step (picking up the front foot before you start). •The receiver’s back should be straight, and he should be leaning forward so that his chest is over his knees and his knees over his toes. •Place arms in a comfortable position. •Lift head to scan defense before turning head in to watch the ball (move on ball movement, not sound). NUMBERING SYSTEM 1 6 5 4 2 Q 3 This playbook utilizes a simple numbering system. This will allow you to give each player and number and tell them they are running the pass pattern that the number is showing on the diagram. This will save a lot of time. All you need to do is print these plays out or bring them up on your smart phone or tablet. The players are numbered from left to right. Typically it is best to put your best athlete at the 3 & 4 positions. However, you can easily switch kids around based on who you want to get the football. The 6 is the center- who snaps or tosses the ball to the Q.
