Novel Study
Dracula
Visual Representations
Today you are going to be considering how the use of visual representations can establish
significant ideas about texts. You are going to look at various posters or novel covers about
Dracula to assist you in examining how images are powerful devices in positioning viewers.
Additionally, you will be looking at the trailer of the 1931 version of Dracula and the 1922
Nosferatu trailer to consider how trailers create interest about a film and thus reignited interest
in the novel.
Learning Intentions:


You will examine a variety of visual images of the novel Dracula.
You will identify and discuss ideas about the English Textual Concepts of style, narrative and
character established in the images.
Success Criteria:

You will complete the worksheet analysing the images and will construct a response to the
question “How effectively do these visual representations entice readers to the text?”
Visual Images of the novel Dracula
Carefully examine each of the images below. For each one consider what focus idea about the novel the
cover presents; how colour and images are used; and of what event within the text it makes you think.
Also include comments on what is similar between the covers and any differences that you identify.
You will be discussing these with the class before moving on to the next activities.
Movie trailers
Novel covers are one way to persuade people to read a text. Movie trailers are also used, and movies can
encourage people to go away after viewing and read the source text.
Here are two trailers for vampire movies. One is for the 1931 movie of Dracula. The other is for the 1922
movie Nosferatu, a silent film made in German. Bram Stoker’s widow felt this movie was such a close
copy of the novel that it was plagiarism and she sued the film makers to have the film destroyed.

Compare the two trailers. What elements of the source text can you identify in these?
Using these sources create a list of the main images and/or symbols that seem to be associated with
vampires and Dracula?
Reread the English Textual Concept - style, what aspects of this concept do you identify in the trailers?
Reread the English textual Concept - character. How do the trailers develop ideas about character?
Reread the English textual Concept - narrative. How do the trailers develop ideas about narrative?
