What are the different Provinces and their Districts found in Papua
New Guinea?
Province is a part of a country that have a government of its own according to Oxford Language
Dictionary. Provinces in Papua New Guinea are grouped into four regions, namely Highlands
Region, Islands Region, Momase Region and Southern Region. (Patrick. S & Michael, 2011)
Where these regional Provinces are made of different districts. In this paper, we will be looking
at the different Provinces in Papua New Guinea and how many Districts each province have
including their names.
The four Regions of PNG are its broadest administrative divisions.
While the 22 provincial level divisions are the primary
administrative divisions of PNG. The regions are quite significant
in daily life, as they are often the basis for organization of
government services (such as police), corporate operations,
sporting competitions, and even the machinations of politics.

These four regions then comprise a number of provinces including their districts (Patrick. S &
Michael, 2011).

Highlands Region: Chimbu (Simbu), Eastern Highlands, Enga, Hela, Jiwaka, Southern
Highlands, and Western Highlands.
 Simbu has 6 Districts; Chuave, Gumine, Karimui-Nomane, Kerowagi, KundiawaGembogl & Sina-Sina Yonggomogl
 Eastern Highlands has 8 Districts; Goroka, Daulo, Henganofi, Kainantu, Lufa, Oburawonenara, Okapa & Unggai-Benna
 Enga has 5 districts; Kandep, Kompiam, lagaip-Porgera, Wapenamanda, & Wabag
 Hela has 3 district; Komo-Magarima, Koroba-Kopiago & Tari-Pori.
 Jiwaka has 3 district; Anglimp-South Waghi, Jimi & North Waghi.
 Southern Highlands has 5 districts; Ialibu-Pangia, Imbonggu, Kagua-Erave, MendiMunihu, & Nipa Kutubu
 Western Highlands has 4 district; Mount Hagen, Mul-Baiyer, Tambul-Nebiler, & Dei

Islands Region: Bougainville (North Solomons), East New Britain, Manus, New Ireland,
and West New Britain.
 Bougainville has 3 districts; North Bougainville, Central Bougainville, & South
Bougainville
 East New Britain has 4 districts; Pomio, Kokopo, Rabaul, & Gazelle
 Manus has only 1 district; i.e. Lorangau
 New Ireland has 2 districts; Kavieng & Namatanai
 West New Britain has 2 districts; Kandrian-Gloucester, & Talasea

Momase Region: East Sepik, Madang, Morobe, and Sandaun (West Sepik).

 East Sepik has 6 districts; Wosera-Gawi, Maprik, Ambunti-Drekikikier,
Yangoru-Sausia, Angoram & Wewak
 Madang has 6 districts; Madang, Sumkar, Usino-Bundi, Rai Coast, & Bogia
 Morobe has 9 districts; Bulolo, Finschafen, Huon, Kabwum, Lae, Markham,
Menyamya, Nawae, & Tewai/Siassi.
 Sandaun (West Sepik) has 4 districts; Aitape-Lumi, Nuku, Telefomin, &
Vanimo-Green River

Southern Region: Central, Gulf, Milne Bay, Oro (Northern), and Western (Fly River)





Central has 4 districts; Abau, Goilala, Kairuku-‐Hiri & Rigo
Gulf has 2 districts; Kerema & Kikori
Milne Bay has 4 districts; Alotau, Esa’ala, Kiriwina-Goodenough, & Samarai-Murua
Oro has 2 districts; Ijivitari & Sohe
Western (Fly River) has 3 districts; North Fly, Middle Fly & South Fly
To conclude, Papua New Guinea has 4 Regions; Highlands, Islands, Southern & Momase. These
4 regions have 22 provinces which comprised of 89 districts including National Capital District
as per the 2011 census.
