Lesson Overview
With the advancement of technology, the internet has created opportunity for
media and information in terms of use, access, delivery, and application. And taking part
in the information society is vital for nation building. Different media and information
platforms are available online for storage and access. And with its significant growth in
usage rate, it is the responsibility of users, especially the children and the young, to make
use of its advantages and most importantly, identify the possible threats that come along
with it.
Empowering and educating the children and the young people on how to
properly manage the risks related to internet is the best protection there is.

Although one has the right to freedom of expression, it is not absolute. There exists

boundaries to freedom of speech relate to libel, slander, obscenity, pornography,
sedition, incitement, fighting words, classified information, copyright violation, trade
secrets, food labeling, non-disclosure agreements, the right to privacy, dignity, the right
to be forgotten, public security and perjury.
The need to educate oneself in properly engaging with the internet in all matters
that concern media and information is important. It depends on the users to make the
most of the information found on the internet, utilizing it empower Filipino citizens and
protect each one from mishandling this powerful tool in this digitalized age.
