Amanda Ishaya D169 Task 2 1. Discuss how using the visual support accommodation might have helped the student with an exceptionality (dyslexia) learn the mathematical terms. During the lesson I chose to use my white board to both draw angles and write key vocabulary words. I also had the students repeat the names of the angles together during the lesson. When the dyslexic student asked for clarification on the pronunciation of one of the angles, I separated the word into syllables and had the students repeat each syllable while I showed them the word. She was then able to repeat the word properly with the class and we all moved on together. It proved beneficial to have the students repeat the vocabulary terms with me, and then on their own, as well as present the material in several different ways. In this case, there was a visual representation of the angle itself, the name of the angle was both written and spoken by all students, and the definition of each word was spoken, and examples found in the room. These strategies provide success for all of the students and gave support to the student with an exceptionality without singling her out. Presenting the information to the student with dyslexia verbally, visually and having them repeat it back is beneficial because it allows the dyslexic student to receive the information in many different ways. This allows their brains to hear the information and processes it in many different ways, allowing them to retain the information more easily. 2. Discuss one thing that happened while you were teaching that you might do differently in your future classroom. I noticed that during the lesson I was speaking very quickly, this led to sometimes talking over students when they were answering questions. I feel that some of this was due to the audio delay, but more of it was due to my nerves. In a future classroom, I would slow down and leave more time for students to answer verbally. It would allow them more time to process the information and choose an answer and prevent me from speaking over them. This would create a more friendly classroom overall and allow to me to relax a little too.
