1 Summary #6 Written Summaries : Post Modernism Era Mijaaniq Camp Music Department, Fayetteville State University MUSI 210: Music Appreciation Professor David J. Lewis II 05/08/2023 The term postmodernism first came into play around 1970 to describe the trends of music and art that happened in the 1940s. This is an era of western philosophy. This was the era of antiauthority and it heavily showed in art, music, and philosophy. This was an era where it was not what music was but what music could be. This era could be a main example for the saying “ain’t nothing new up under the sun”. This is the era where you have artists and composers taking things from the Baroque or Renaissance period and mixing them. During this time reason was questioned and randomness and disorder were embraced. Music during this time also embraced mass media. Composers during this time were drawn to compositionals methods such as total serialism which was continued in the atonal style created by Arnold Schoenberg. They adapted the serialist techniques of pitch selection to elements like rhythm and dynamics. Total serialism influences post-tonal theory. Another method is electronic music, experimenting with electronic instruments gave them complete control over sounds. The invention of this caused new and cool 1 timbre. Because of this discovery this gave way for composers to take sounds, voices and mix and slice them creating some really good music.
