Substrates- Fuel sources from which we make energy (adenosine triphosphate (ATP))
- Carbohydrate, fat, protein
Bioenergetics
- Process of converting substrates into energy
- Performed at cellular level
Metabolism: Chemical reactions in the body.
Kcal= Dietary calorie= 1000 calories
Anaerobic means no oxygen needed
Aerobic needs oxygen
Glycolytic System
Pathway ends with pyruvic acid
-Without oxygen, pyruvic acid is stored as lactic acid
All three energy systems are always working at the same time.
Vitamins and minerals
 Body needs vitamins to assist with the breakdown of glucose and fatty acids and other
bodily functions.
 Minerals needed for ATP production, nerve conduction, bone formation, and red blode
cell production.
Hydration
 65% of body weight is pure water
 Water loss? Sweat
 Consume 2.7 to 3.7 liters per day
