THE CELL THE CELL THEORY, STRUCTURES, AND FUNCTIONS General Biology - GRADE 12 OBJECTIVES Determine the events that led to the formulation of the Cell Theory; Explain the postulates of the Cell Theory; and Identify the real-life implications of Cell Theory, Cell Structures, and Functions. THE CELL THEORY THE CELL THEORY Cell Theory or Cell Postulate was first formally written by Matthias Jakob Schleiden and Theodor Schwann in 1839. ZACHARIAS & HANS JANSSEN(1595) 1595 ZACHARIAS &HANS JANSSEN ROBERT HOOKE (1655) Discovered the first cells in cork through the microscope, he coined the term "cell" as the boxy figures reminded him of cells or rooms. 1595 ZACHARIAS &HANS JANSSEN 1655 ROBERT HOOKE ANTONIE VAN LEEUWENHOEK (1674) Discovered the first protozoa, a singlecelled organism he called "animalcules" or the Infusoria in 1674. 1595 ZACHARIAS &HANS JANSSEN 1655 ROBERT HOOKE 1674 ANTONIE VAN LEEUWENHOEK THE CELL THEORY(1839) States that: The cell is the unit of structure, physiology, and organization in living things. The cell retains a dual existence as a distinct entity and a building block in the construction of organisms. Cells form by free-cell formation, similar to the formation of crystals (spontaneous generation). MODERN CELL THEORY States that: All known living things are made up of cells. The cell is structural & functional unit of all living things. All cells come from pre-existing cells by division. (Spontaneous Generation does not occur). a. Cells contains hereditary information which is passed from cell to cell during cell division. b. All cells are basically the same in chemical composition. c. All energy flow (metabolism & biochemistry) of life occurs within cells. MODERN CELL THEORY States that: All known living things are made up of cells.
