Concept Notes/Digest/Background information/Illustrative Examples Less Than is use when the first set (left) is fewer or lesser than the second set (right), we use the expression “less than”. Compare the following sets of objects Set A Set B Which is less? Why? Set A is fewer than set B because we have only two guavas in set A and four mangoes in set B. More Than when the first set (left) is greater or more than the second set (right), we use the expression “more than”. Compare the objects Set A Set B Which is more? Why? Set A is many compared to Set B because there are six balls in set A and set B have only 4 dolls. As Many As when the two sets (left and right) are equal or have the same number as other, we use the expression “as many as”. Set A Set B What is the answer? Set A and Set B has the same number of objects. In ordering sets from least to greatest, the first set of objects should start from smallest to the greatest. In ordering sets from greatest to least, the first set should start from the biggest to the smallest. Illustrative Examples: Compare each set below using the expression less than, more than, as many as. Set A Set B 8 tops are more than 6 bells We use more than because the set of tops is many compared to the set of bells. Set A Set B 5 squares are less than 10 triangles We use less than because the set of squares is fewer or lesser than the set of triangles. Set A Set B 6 umbrellas are as many as 6 fans We use as many as if the number of objects in a set are the same. Arrange the sets from least to greatest. Answer: Arrange the sets from greatest to least. Answer: III. Activities/Exercises A. Compare the following sets. Write more than or less than on the blank. Set A Set B 1. ______________ 2. ________________ 3. ________________ 4. _________________ 5. _________________ B. Draw objects inside the box as many as the given set. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. C. Put a check (/) if the sets are arranged from least to greatest, (X) if the sets are arranged from greatest to least. _____1. _____2. _____3. _____4. _____5. D.
