COURSE OBJECTIVES
This course provides the main physical chemistry component of the two-semester college-level general
chemistry program given at the CEGEP level. In the Science Program, it fulfils competency 00UM: To
analyze the properties of solutions and reactions in solutions. It also partially fulfils competency 00UU [To
apply what they have learned to one or more subjects in the sciences]. Although students will have
encountered many of the topics in the course in Chemistry 504 or Chemistry 001, now they will undertake a
more complete study of these and other new topics with a strong quantitative bias as shown by the great
emphasis on problem-solving in this course. Students will find that much of this course provides an
introduction to Analytical Chemistry, Physical Chemistry, Instrumental Chemistry and Industrial Chemistry.
This course aims to provide the student with sufficiently extensive knowledge of solutions,
thermodynamics, chemical kinetics and chemical equilibrium, which will permit him/her to solve
theoretically and experimentally the principal problems found in the program.
A complete description of the objectives and standards of this course is provided in the document
describing the Dawson College Science Program. It is located at:
http://www.dawsoncollege.qc.ca/programs/science-medical-studies-and-engineering/science
COURSE COMPETENCIES
This course will allow the student to achieve the following competencies:
•
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
00UM (Fully achieved): To analyze the properties of solutions and reactions in solutions.
Analyze the colligative properties of solutions.
Solve problems pertaining to kinetics of reactions in solutions.
Solve problems pertaining to chemical equilibria.
Verify experimentally a number of properties of solutions.
Determine experimentally a number of characteristics of reactions in solutions.
•
